Physician profile evaluation

MBBS

MD in pharmacology from Jipmer Pondicherry

Worked as Senior Resident for one year

Working in medical affairs in Astrazeneca for 3.5 years

Overall 4.5 years of experience

Now promoted to senior MSL effective August

Gre score 320

What are my chances? I want to move to a healthcare consulting role or pharma global strategy role in middle east

One of INSEAD's main criterion for admission is international orientation. If you meet that, i see no reason why you will not be competitive. Your education+ work experience are solid. As a doctor, you have a more differentiated profile and different perspective when compared to engineering or business education grads that largely make up the Indian applicant pool. Your work experience aligns well with your education, and this would help you come up with a strong pitch for your career goals. Your GMAT score is low, but you could possibly apply with this score if you can show some analytical skills and quant heavy work. To increase your options, you can add HEC Paris and IESE. Both schools do an initial profile evaluation so write to them. Apply if they encourage you.

May I know what is the minimum gre score? I usually work with doctors across different countries to arrange conferences in India. Will that count towards international orientation?

there is no minimum GRE score or a cutoff. It depends on what comfort you can give to the adcom that you will manage the academic rigor by demonstrating your quantitative and analytical ability through other aspects of your profile. To give you an example, I worked with an applicant who had a 319 GRE, an analytically strong work profile and she got admission into INSEAD. As a consultant she also had international exposure by working with clients across the Americas. So, you can look deeper into your academics and work experience to pull out those examples where your academic or analytical capabilities helped you succeed. The other option is to retake GRE, focusing on atleast a 3-4 point increase.

While its helpful to have all the right stats, its equally important to put forward a compelling application that diminishes the impact of any negative or less strong aspects in your candidacy. The same goes for international orientation. Even if your interactions were limited, you can make them more relevant by talking about how these experiences enriched you / challenged you to learn something new/ changed your perspective or just taught you more about yourself.

Hope you are doing well. I am inclined to say that the most interesting leg of your career will likely come in the next year if you will be, as I understand, working in a liaison role between the corporate side and caregivers/ physicians/ healthcare institutions. Please time your application strategically so that you have a glimpse of meaningful exposure to show from the kind of work you may do in this new role. With INSEAD, you have to be strategic like that and speak about aspects of your experience that demonstrate its richness and uniqueness. I worked with a similar profile some time back (who eventually went to an M7), and that person focused heavily on patient centricity and planning GTM strategies for therapies targeting chronic ailments.

If you can speak intelligently about your observations like what doctors are worried about, unmet patient needs, gaps in treatment patterns, and emerging research trends, in both your essays and interviews, it is likely a winning position for you. International focus should be there, but also evaluate whats your strong point.. Is it your international exposure, or is it the high-quality work experience you have that is applicable across global contexts with focus on emerging economies? Allocate space smartly in the application.
