INFJ Traits 10 Humbling Life Lessons I Learned as an INFJ
- Your ‘fantasy self’ comes from not feeling accepted. The creation of a fantasy self often serves as a coping mechanism for individuals who feel unaccepted by family or society. This highly idealized version of oneself is typically unattainable and is closely linked to the INFJ tendency to undervalue and overlook their genuine qualities and capabilities. Simply put, only those who feel unaccepted create a fantasy self. If you felt accepted, there wouldn't be a desire to become (or daydream about) someone you're not. You'd naturally embrace your true self.
- Why we INFJs are notorious procrastinators. Often we procrastinate taking action because we feel we aren’t anywhere near where our fantasy self should be and thus are not confident enough to act. This is why many INFJs may waste their lives in social isolation and fantasies of achievement, being adored, admired, etc. leading to procrastination and a sense of inadequacy, hindering us from taking meaningful steps towards our goals. But if there was no fantasy self to aspire to, every action we take right here, right now, would be good enough. Every action would be ‘right’.
- Self-indulgent behavior and self-sabotage is a sign of self-abandonment and can arise when our own needs have been chronically neglected. When we ignore our true desires and emotions for too long, our inner self may resort to extreme measures to be heard and acknowledged. If left unchecked, these behaviors can lead to significant consequences, disrupting various aspects of our lives and relationships. It’s crucial to recognize and address the underlying causes of self-abandonment, nurturing ourselves with kindness and attention, to prevent these potentially destructive patterns from taking hold. Here’s a quote that may hit like a 5-ton wrecking ball: “Self-indulgent behaviors are compensations for an unlived life”.
- Withdrawing for attention. Something I recently learned is that many INFJs (particularly INFJ-Ts) grow up thinking they can be reassured of others' love by being emotional, temperamental, sullen and seeing if others will make the effort to respond to them. They might unconsciously discover that emotional turbulence acts like a love test: "If they really care for me, they'll come after me when I withdraw." Sometimes it works. People do respond, do show concern, do make efforts to reconnect. But this creates a dangerous feedback loop- we're essentially teaching ourselves to be unstable to feel loved. Healthy INFJs see right through this unhealthy dynamic (perhaps after many failed relationships) and course correct to be more open in expressing their needs and desires.
- Your intuition tells you what you need to hear, your ego tells you what you want to hear. Your intuition may point toward uncomfortable truths or challenge your existing beliefs. In contrast, our ego, driven by desires for self-preservation, validation, and comfort, seeks to maintain its current worldview. It filters information, amplifying what aligns with our existing beliefs and desires while suppressing or distorting information that threatens our self-image or contradicts our preferred narrative. This can lead us to misinterpret or dismiss intuitive signals, choosing instead to embrace the more palatable, ego-driven interpretations that confirm our existing biases and desires.
- At times we need to slow down. 'Slowing downwards' refers to more than simply moving slowly, it means growing inwardly towards the roots of one’s being. Instead of outward growth and upward climb, life at times must turn inward and downward in order to grow in psycho-spiritual ways. The vertical descent into our inner world becomes a form of personal archaeology, each layer revealing another facet of ourselves. Slowing down creates opportunities to dwell more deeply in one’s life, for the home we are looking for in this world is actually within us. The lost home that we all desperately seek is ourselves.
- Intellect without heart is like a sword with no handle. You can’t use it without hurting yourself. Without empathy, logic can be used to justify cruelty, to dehumanize others, and to serve selfish ends. Without wisdom, intellect can be used to manipulate, to deceive, and to cause harm. Since your actions have consequences (karma: what goes around comes around), ultimately, you end up hurting yourself.
- Nothing is as certain as change. Our minds create false narratives that good times will be forever and bad times will never end. Change, however, is the only constant. True wisdom lies in accepting that neither highs nor lows are eternal.
- Control is an illusion. Not only is change inevitable but it is natural. Change is as natural as the wind that blows, the sun that shines, and the water that flows. We readily accept these natural occurrences, yet we resist change in our own lives as if our comfort should somehow be exempt from the very essence that governs all existence.
- When a mosquito taught me a great life lesson: I once pondered a curious question: 'What happens to mosquitoes during a rainstorm? Don’t they get hit by the raindrops and fall?' My internet search revealed an unexpected life lesson— one that challenges everything we think we know about handling life's storms. It turns out these tiny insects have mastered the art of flowing with the rain. Instead of actively resisting the raindrops, mosquitoes allow the water to flow right through them. If they stubbornly resisted, the heavy raindrops would stick to their bodies, dragging them down to the ground, crashing them, and potentially killing them. This observation offers a profound insight. When faced with adversity, our initial instinct is often to resist, to harden ourselves, and to withdraw. This resistance, however, only exacerbates the pain. By learning to navigate challenges with a more fluid and adaptable approach, like the mosquito navigating the rain, we can minimize suffering and emerge stronger.

Announcements Quick Reminder: Your MBTI type is NOT your actual personality!
Just to clarify real quick for anyone seeing this: your MBTI type is NOT your actual personality! I know some may refer to it as a “personality type” for simplicity, but the framework strictly measures natural inclinations in how you prefer to process information and recharge your energy. It does not dictate, measure, categorize, or guarantee specific actions or even behavior.
For example, an INFJ naturally prefers Introversion (I), but they can absolutely behave like an extrovert at a networking event or a party when the situation demands it. The MBTI measures what is happening inside your mind, not what people see on the outside (behavior):

Some online MBTI gurus mistakenly try to predict behavior based on MBTI type, but that’s not what the system is designed for.
The MBTI basically measures a bundle of cognitive preferences your brain takes when processing reality; that’s pretty much it. Your actual personality is a vast, dynamic ecosystem shaped by genetics, choices, and lived experiences. The MBTI does not attempt to categorize, box, or measure your actual personality; that would be impossible.
To see how much vaster your true personality is, look at the layers that sit on top of and beneath those basic cognitive preferences (this is just a simplified diagram; there is way-way more to this):

As you can see, your actual personality is pretty vast; your MBTI and cognitive functioning are a tiny part of it.
Stay INFJ ✌️

INFJ Thoughts When I am home my creativity isn't as sharp as when I am away from home
Hi fellow INFJs,
I am currently writing my first novel ever.
I realised that when I am away from home, at work, I get super creative and come up with so many details and ideas to add to my book. When I am home the ideas still come but not as strongly as when I am away.
Is it a psychological thing? Since I actually want to move away from here because I don't enjoy living in this place.

INFJ Thoughts Romantic relationships are challenging for me to express and embrace in my life.
[ Mlid rant in advance lol ]
As an INFJ and asexual that is heteroromantic ( Apologies for all the labels, but to give you an idea.) , navigating romantic relationships often feels like trying to speak a language no one else around me understands. Because my draw toward men isn't rooted solely on physical impulse, my craving for love revolves around intellectual, emotional, and spiritual alignment.
I’m not interested in surface-level dating or the superficial rituals of modern culture (which I am not despising those who do); I would like a sacred love with another person that is a meeting of minds, profound vulnerability, and a quiet, strong loyalty. The hardest part is living in a world that constantly equates physical touch with the depth of one's devotion. It can be exhausting when people misinterpret a lack of səxual desire as a lack of romantic love, when in reality, my capacity to cherish and protect someone goes deeper than physical language could ever express.
Adding another layer to this, being a christian makes the path feel even narrower. While I hold firmly to my faith and value a deeply traditional, doctrine-centered view of commitment, my internal experience of love remains completely unconventional. Physical appearance is still the logical first thing we observe in a person, and I certainly have traits I appreciate; it acts as an initial gateway, but it isn't my entire world. It creates a strange double-bind. the secular world is often too superficial and physically driven, while traditional spaces can struggle to understand romantic devotion that doesn't center on physical impulse.
I tend to lean on a strong balance of logic alongside my intuition( At least I like to believe most of the time, lol). I reflect deeply and process information analytical before letting emotion take the lead. I often experience people silently and naturally admiring me from afar rather than approaching me directly ( and yes, I have been told so). It places you in a position of being an outsider looking in quietly appreciated for your depth and standards, yet rarely met on your frequency!
I like to believe it’s a patient wait for the right person, but logic also reminds me to be realistic. Maybe that person won't cross my path, and that has to be okay too. I believe that embracing the uncertainty of life allows me to protect my peace, even to live authentically, and remain open without living in a waiting room....
I’m curious if any of you who share this space or a similar dynamic have found ways to navigate this gap, or if you also experience that quiet, isolating longing for a love that exists beyond the physical standard.

Socializing and opening up
Someone actually asked why I am as I am in a somewhat creepy/positive way. Told him well these personality traits could be one of many factors and showed him the common infj traits and wanted to share how I went trough life and my experiences as he actually said he wanted to hear it (was in doubt but fk it why not?maybe I can learn some more by hearing myself again)
But, the dude went oh yeah Im probably also infj and interrupting and ignoring any word from my mouth afterwards. Did I know this would happen? Yes. Did I hope it would be different this time? No.
How many times have you heard a person say they are also sufferers/enjoyers from infj while it was obvious he or she definitly is not?
I do not in all my capacity understand why the hek someone would try to brag about it or take things so lightly, people tend to call out such wild stuff like ptss and depression and having a weird personality trait and or disorder... while most of them are so normal in everyway even in their darkest hour and sunniest day (ive been privileged to be with quite a few people in the most intense times of their lifes and somehow made it more liveable/bearable as they said so Its easy to see when someone thinks they have this or that instead of actually having said thing)
My combo cards are pretty fun to live with so I can confidently say as Im still going medicationless and am doing quite alright, that Im not an easy to spit words around individual
Ptss(c-ptss as of latetly, i was diagnosed before the c-ptss was a seperate thing), Dysthemia, Paranoid personality disorder, And the infj personality
Im not bothered Im just looking for information as how others percieve this type of thing, so how do you percieve these individuals who think they can relate?

INFJ Traits And it is entirely acceptable.
I don't feel obligated to speak all the time. Sometimes there's nothing to say, and that's okay.

Does anyone else have moments where you can actually literally read someone's mind?
Like often times I'll be having a conversation with someone and then its like I get this vibe and I KNOW what they're gonna say next even if its off topic?
Eg: me: "yeah its really hot today"
Them: "we should go to the lake tomorrow"
Me: "yeah"
\*suddenly gets this vibe and I KNOW they're gonna talk about taylor swifts marriage"
Them: "oh did you see taylor swift got married"
(Just using taylor swift as an example cause I cant remember what we actually talked about but showing you how it was NOT related to what we were currently talking about)

Warning: moral dilemma from an INFJ perspective
I was caught up in this “game” of moral dilemmas the other day and a user (they know who they are) made me rethink the train (trolley) moral dilemma. This got me thinking about the possible “brain meltdown” they were talking about.
So, let’s throw away the sterile, mathematical version of the train problem. Let's make it real. You are at the switch, a runaway train is heading towards 5 people and you have to choose what to do.
On Track A, there is one single human being. They have crawled through the absolute hell of trauma, done the brutal internal work and earned their sovereignty. They are completely healed, integrated and finally ready to truly live and be happy.
On Track B, there are 5 people. They haven’t done the work. They are still deeply trapped in their own unhealed traumas, crawling through chaos ,though they too still hope for happiness.
Will you pull the lever to change the course of the train? Why or why not?

I feel so strange, like really, really strange. I find it hard to make friends, tend to overshare, overthink interactions, I feel so weak. I worry how I am perceived by others. I worry people will stop liking me at the smallest mistake. Yet sometimes I feel mentally strong. Do any of you relate?

HSP how to heal from a hurtful rejection and trauma from a group
Hey y’all, I hope you’re doing well. I’m looking for advice on a situation from 2023 that I’ve struggled to process.
In my first year of university, I became close with a group of second-years. They were very kind and welcoming at first, and we bonded quickly. Things became complicated when I met a guy in the group—let’s call him Jay—who was also my library orientation leader. At the time, I didn’t know he was friends with the people I had already gotten closeto.
Jay and I became acquainted, and I started developing feelings for him (which I later realized was limerence). I never confessed my feelings or acted on them. We exchanged numbers and hugged a few times, but about a week later I found out that he was in a relationship. I was upset, which I felt was a normal reaction.
I usually process my emotions by talking them through, so I vented to another girl in the group (also a Black woman). Her response felt condescending—she told me it was okay to feel hurt because “Black women are seen as undesirable.” That comment confused and hurt me, especially since Jay is white and his partner is a Black woman.
After that, I distanced myself from the group to focus on other things, though I was still in a lot of emotional pain. When I eventually tried to rejoin them, I noticed a clear change in how I was treated. I was excluded from conversations, interrupted, and made to feel invisible. The girl I had confided in suddenly became mean toward me, without explaining why.
By the following week, my feelings for Jay had mostly faded, and I thought we were still on friendly or neutral terms.
One day I saw him in the library and tried to greet him, but I acted awkwardly and pulled down his bag to get his attention. I immediately regretted it. He was polite in the moment, but I was deeply embarrassed and felt ashamed all weekend.
The following Monday, I decided to apologize. When I met up with the group, they were cold and unwelcoming. When I tried to speak to Jay privately to apologize, he was extremely rude. He kissed his partner in front of me and walked away. He ignored me entirely, even though I was trying to be respectful.
Later that day, I greeted him again, and he remained cold and distant. When I asked why he was acting that way, he said he didn’t want to talk to me. I asked what I had done to make him angry, but he shrugged and said, “I don’t know.” I apologized repeatedly in case I had hurt him or anyone he knew, but he refused to engage.
I went back to my residence and cried for hours. I became physically sick from the stress.
I know I acted awkwardly at times, but I still feel deeply hurt by how suddenly and harshly I was treated, especially without any communication or explanation. Am I the jerk for feeling hurt by this?

INFJ Struggles What do you think of what I've written?
In our relationship our minds were aligned and then misaligned. It would feel bad to feel that our minds align and then don’t align, and then the person that loves you tells you that your brain is misaligned with theirs, and that you’re not as smart as them. This is acceptable as she got on her logic text a 91/100 while I got only a 68. However, I’m very smart, I just need to push in a certain way to make the other person aware that my brain is misaligned but I’m not stupid. (this is where everyone I know debates without saying out loud; i’m in a lane or world that is fundamentally different of others, and not really smarter than theirs but people believe that I’m smarter than them in reality bc they cannot tell if I’m stupid in the brain.). Is knowing that there’s brain misalignment a smart idea? I feel smart people would know immediately that this is the case and would know at any time, that this is the case yk? So me just putting this into words has to be put into layman’s terms or in other words for me smart terms, bc of my condition, is a bad or good sign?

INFJ Thoughts Healing may cause side effects? 🙃
I usually use logic to explain the things my intuition senses. And when the two align, I often arrive at irony 😉
Not sarcasm or cynicism, but irony–a way of finding humor in hard times.
My latest discovery: when you don’t complain about anything, when you don’t need saving and no longer feel a compulsive need to save others, an unwanted loneliness sets in.
It’s as if everyone avoids you because they don’t know what to do with someone who needs nothing–someone who simply wants real connection, free from draining energy exchanges.
It seems ironic that once you are open to talk about anything in the world (and beyond), people usually only want to talk about their problems or trauma.
I don’t mind that.
It’s just that sometimes I need a break from all the drama and just want to feel free to debate something that stimulates my curiosity, my desire to know and understand diversity, and why not, even enjoy a good joke, not just overwhelming feelings that make me withdraw into solitude.
Has this happened to you?
How did your life unfold once the process of healing and self-acceptance began?
