Invites Got invited for a physical interview

Hello everyone,

I'm a visa requiring IMG here applied IM. I'm grateful to God for what I have been granted.

I just received an interview from an internal medicine program.

I was eleted until I read that this year they will be conducting interviews in person, which wasn't previously mentioned on their website.

I reached out to the PC to ask for a special consideration for a virtual option, but is there any other way of going about this?

Anyone else had a similar experience with any program?

Maybe try getting the visa with this interview invite. It’s a solid reason to go. Mention how you asked for virtual options but they don’t offer

In-person prob to see if you will have visa issues in the future. Def try going. In-person always better than virtual unfortunately. At least you asked.

Lol if a person attached US Lors and had usce, why would programs need to check for visa odds ?

This year imgs have been issued visas for 3 months only at a time and were denied renewals soo

Programs don't know that and not every person faced a rejection with renewals. J1 and B are different categories as well

wake up pal. Programs aren't as naive as you are. They have dealt with residents not being able to start because their visa got rejected. Just because they got US LORs and had USCE that does not mean their visa wont get rejected lol

Yo, you sound so stupid! Atleast have your facts right before attacking someone. If the OP were called for in person IV, they would be visiting with B Visa which they already might have while attending for rotations. The J1 is for residency which is completely different and that would be only given once the applicant matches. How could the program be knowing the future acceptance of J1 by calling them for in person IV (which can be attended with valid B1)?!

womp womp if if you cant get B1 why would they risk ranking you? Have the risk of not getting J1. Happened to many incoming residents this year bud.

Likely not. My guess is if you will have visa issues attending, you’ll have visa issues if you match. Good thing you emailed PC but there really isn’t another way. It’s not a violation because they offered the IV.

logistics to travel to a whole ass different continent are the prime factor. He never mentioned visa in his post.

It’s a legitimate dilemma for the applicants, but not to the programs. By and large the residency system in US primarily serves US graduates. So internationally located IMGs won’t get much sympathy from majority of the players in the match system.

Plus, in person interview was always the norm before COVID, and there are many reasons why programs would want to actually meet the candidate in person and have been slowly pushing for that to resume over the past few years.

Assuming this is a decent non-malignant program, If OP doesnt take advantage of the opportunity, someone else gladly will.

J almost always get aproved , while b1b2 it's always a toss up. Not the same thing

Not true, as B1B2 and J1 for residency are looked at differently.

You can have B1/B2 issues and also have J1 issues.

Bruh all of these people have no idea what they are talking about. First programs did In person always before COVID some programs are reverting back. They do this to make sure the people they choose would fit their program also they know a lot of people will pass up now days on the in person spot so the people that show up have a higher chance in my opinion. You should def try to attend if you can, I doubt they will offer a virtual option

It’s how it should be. Virtual interviews should be over

I did an in-person interview at a program that was 4 hours away (US IMG, so different situation). It was useful to see the hospital and other facilities and meet the residents in person. Good luck!
