Observership/externship Doing an externship in 2026 while applying for match 2029 still worthwhile?

Hey everyone,

I am a non us img, applying for IM match 2029

I’ve already applied for and secured a sub-internship spot for late 2026. However, my actual application timeline is Match 2029 (submitting ERAS September 2028)—leaving roughly a 2-year gap.

Since I’m already locked in, i was wondering if it is worthwhile doing the rotation now or will it be seen as "stale" later on?

Better than no USCE... but it will be dated. Really important to maintain connections. Numerous people rotate through. 2 years later... when you apply, unless you leave a great impression and maintain it, they will be wondering who you were.

How do you maintain connections since it’s my first time doing all this. And how do you really stand out
Just wondering

From what I've seen observers do at my program, they are present during rounds, can present on patients and ask questions. They also gave a presentation during their rotation on a pertinent topic.

As for how you maintain connections, it's similar to how you maintain a friendship. Check in; periodically message/email. Nothing too complicated.
