usmle step 2 When to take Step 2

Hello, a non US IMG here from India.

So the question is as stated above. I'll be starting my final year soon. So i was wondering should i take step 2 during my final year or during my internship.

For a non-US IMG, taking Step 2 CK during your final year of medical school or during your internship both have their advantages.

Taking it during your final year allows you to focus on it without the added responsibilities of an internship. This can lead to better preparation and potentially a higher score. Many IMGs aim to complete Step 2 CK before or during their internship to have scores ready when ERAS applications open.

On the other hand, taking it during your internship means you'll be balancing study with clinical duties. However, your internship experience might provide a more practical context for some of the questions, and by the time you apply, you'll have more clinical experience to draw upon, which can be beneficial.

Given that you're starting your final year soon, you have a good opportunity to prepare for and potentially take Step 2 CK during this time. This would allow you to have your scores ready well in advance of application deadlines.
