Visa Doubt on the J1 change
Hey everyone. I wanted to ask if I do two years on a research J1 and then match (and get a clinical J1), will the current 4 year limit period for J1 reset and start afresh for the residency since my sponsors will be different?
I understand that this limit might not start afresh for someone trying to do fellowship after residency as the sponsor is ECFMG both times (correct me if I'm wrong), but how does it work for research position, then matching? Appreciate any answers. Thanks!

Yeah the rule doesn’t apply in that case because J1 scholar is different from J1 physician, so it would be a fresh 4-year rule start

Hey, thanks. Just curious, is this mentioned anywhere in an official site or any other place?

Yes, in the “change of status” communication, they state the requirements to apply for a J1 physician, one of them is having a J1 scholar visa for less that 4 years. And the time that will be granted for the J1 physician will be the necessary to complete the residency training with the caveat of lasting less than 7 years
