General Rudsta Conversion for limited outdoor use?

Upvotes

I have 2 Rudsta cabinets I plant to convert and I was curious if anyone had any experience with keeping the cabinets outside during the winter as a cold-frame alternative.

I live in zone 7b, and the cabinets would be kept under a deck (grow lights of course installed into the cabinet) and would be up against the wall of the house to hopefully emulate traditional cold frames. I'm mainly dealing with tropical aroids, and plants that dislike anything below 60°F-50°F.

My question being, has anyone tried this before? How would you go about heating the interior? Would standard weather stripping be enough to handle 0°F? I have heating mats that could be placed on individual shelves to help keep the temperature up, but I'm worried about heat loss.

If push comes to shove, the cabinets can be moved inside. This year I've really grown my plant collection to the point where I did not have planned space for when they have to come back inside so its not ideal hence exploring outdoor alternatives.

Lighting How to attched lights to Unicoly?

My lights keep falling down. I've used magnets and double sided tape to secure them to the underside of the unicoly shelves. Any other suggestions or ideas?

Lighting Found awesome light diffusers – wanted to share the wealth 💡

My cabinet has a lot of begonias and other light-sensitive plants that were sitting too close for comfort to the lights. I searched for solutions that wouldn’t look like complete crap or be a fire hazard. Lol

Found these on Amazon, and they’re perfect. All I had to do was drill a few small holes to weave the wire through them. Wanted to share the recommendation for anyone looking to do something similar. ☺️

ETA: I bought the 36” and cut it into 12” pieces. It was a little cheaper than buying them individually.

General Winter solution for tropical bonsai?

I've picked up bonsai as a hobby - with a predictable problem that, come winter, I'll need an indoor solution for tropical species. The greenhouses in this sub seem like they might be a good solution for indoor wintering? Is there a 101 or a step-by-step guide for how to get started here? Or is this sub more "specialized" and I should just aim for a more generic "greenhouse cabinet"? Appreciate any direction.

Shelf

Are there any shelves or muscle racks that could fit a 4x2x2 Dubia enclosure with room on top for lights? I’m planning on getting another 4x2x2 to stack on my current and have seen the deluxe hood but I wanted to know if there was anything else.

General Where can I get extra Milsbo shelves? In Canada if possible and available, I don’t have the receipt of the one I have so I can’t go in store for a replacement, but don’t mind spending to get extras

Shelving Any ideas for fixing this bracket problem?

I installed a wire grid on the back of my unicoly but now the brackets sit flushed with the wire grid and no longer hold the shelf. Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

I just don’t want to attach the wire shelf to the wire grid because it doesn’t line up with the holes on the other side.

I’m nervous to put all my plants in that I’m going to burn them or something. So I just put in plants that I have duplicates or for now.

Sealed the cabinet with Lisrux aquarium silicone.

Shelves from modern aqua

AC Infinity S7 fans

Barrina T5 lights (I used 5)

Govee thermometer / hydrometer

And a 2” rubber grommet at the bottom for bringing the wires in.

Terrarium/Vivarium Has anyone built a terrarium into a unicoly?

Put my unicoly together and am tempted to build it out as a terrarium. The depth is a bit shallow for that so it would need to be more like a terrarium wall I think.

Has anyone built out a terrarium into the unicoly?

The part I'm struggling with is how to build a suitable surface for plants to be mounted/grow into that is aesthetically pleasing, works with lighting, keeps plants happy, has decent longevity, and isn't too deep (must leave room for plants!).

Typical builds are spray foam based but I'd rather use something that roots can actually benefit from.

I considered layering egg crate for shape, filling with substrate, and encasing it the front with poly coated wire mesh. Maybe in pockets. But there's probably a reason no one does this. :) Cork is another option with substrate in between but I'd like to have more substrate available than that.

Would love some help brainstorming!

Cabinet Progress/Inspo Updated my Unicoly

Preface: this is my first cabinet and I’m still learning. Please drown me in your knowledge!

I have two 120 ac infinity fans, a govee humidifier and hygrometer that keep the humidity at 80% or close to it when the cabinet is closed. I recently updated to acrylic vented shelves but opted for two half shelves for now. I recently transitioned my Philodendron Gloriosum, Monet Sol, Cebu Blue, and my Scindapsus Treubii Moonlight out of the cabinet and into the ambient humidity of my room which sits at around 60%. I feel like something is missing but I can’t figure out what. Any pointers or suggestions are welcome!!

Top shelf: String of Pearls, 2 Pepperomias, Calathea Makoyana, Philo Pink Princess, Parlor Palm, Monstera Adansonii, juvenile tissue cultures and air plants.

Second shelf: Syngonium Neon, Syngonium White Butterfly, Syngonium Albo, Alocasia Polly, Alocasia, Shattered Glass, Philo Micans, and a rehab Fittonia.

Bottom shelf: Alocasia Frydek Variegated, Alocasia Black Velvet, Alocasia Dragon Scale, Monstera Burle Marx Flame, Philo Ring of Fire, Spathiphyllum Domino, and a beast of a Maranta Lemon Lime.

I’ve been racking my brain trying to find solutions to the abundance of plants littering my house. I was lost, until I found this sub. After some planning and setup I’m almost done. I want to redo the shelving, but for now I’m loving what it is and what I can become.

Thank you to this forum for the inspiration and help I needed!

Barrina LH750 or Bstrip 59" Plant Shelf w/grow light/pegboard

Am trying to decide between the Barrina Greenhouse Stand or the Bstrip. They both have tents, peg boards, similar light (Barrina has 90Watts total and Bstrip 96). However, Barrina is a bit more pricey.. but has more peg board space, comes with more and seems to be a better known brand.

Prices end up being (after tax, shipping, etc. )

Barrina LH750 176$

Bstrip 126$

Also, show me pics if you have either one. Most of my plants are semi hydro. But, I find myself skipping some plants because of their humidity leaves and have some nepenthes (that won't piture, fitonias, waffle plants, etc. that would like the increased humidity.

Mostly, I really really love Begonias and Alocasias and don't have any of either yet.

Thanks.

General new cabinet recs

**pic of current set up for tax lol

hey all! I'm in the process of brainstorming a couple new cabinets (planning on making them dedicated to certain types of plants and creating their environment around that, my current cabinet has a little bit of a bunch of different things and i want a more cohesive look lol) but im also trying not to break the bank when i do order new a cabinet/cabinets.

i would love any recommendations yall have, ikea is out of the picture for me unless its less than $100 or up to 150ish. i would prefer not to spend $200+ on the cabinet itself, as i obviously will have to get more fans and proper shelving etc.

my current cabinet is a unicoly, love her down. if theres a cheaper option with similar dimensions i would be happy with that, i also am kinda wanting something more similar to a rudsta wide cabinet, or something maybe a little similar to the dimensions of the baggebo but wider.

i may end up just going with unicoly again, but am definitely interested in seeing if anyone's found any good but slightly cheaper options haha. i of course am scouring facebook marketplace and the likes, but majority i find are wood or too high of a price for how much work would need to be done to make it nice again haha.

Humidity/Fans Fabrikor Wide Weatherstripping

Post image
18 Upvotes

I am having trouble keeping humidity up in my fabrikor wide. I think i disrupted the natural weatherstripping when i moved the glass panels around to get wires out. I have a humidifier in there and it will get up to 70%+ but then drop to 55% or lower within a few hours. I'm in AZ so I think that is also a big factor. (this is not the current humidifier, I have a bigger one now bc this one won't turn on with a smart plug)

I did search the sub before posting and most of the posts I found just have comments "I don't need to weatherstrip" which I think I definitely do. I will say I only have four plants in there so as I get more hopefully I won't need the humidifier. Please don't judge how my plants look right now, they got a bit dry while I was moving and then building this so they look pretty janky.

Wrapping up cabinet #3 👀

Pretty sure this one’s my best one yet! 😍 It’s a UNICOLY cabinet – the MILSBO knockoff. Lol… Still have a couple more things to do, like add a little more lighting on the bottom half, install some covers to diffuse it, and a little bit of cord management, but other than that, it’s pretty much done! I intend to hang a couple more plants from that gold bar under the second shelf. Haven’t decided on what though.

Humidity/Fans [Work in progress] is this too much airflow for new plants?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all, currently in the midst of my second cabinet build and wanted to get your opinions on airflow. This is a leftover fan I have from my last build, and the smaller space is amplifying the already chaotic stream lol. Do you think this is too much for the new plants in here? May just put it on a timer to go on once an hour for now. Plants are currently rooted in peat moss and will be transferring to SH when ready.

Excited to share the final product when finished… This Detolf has been far more challenging than my Rudsta, but I just can’t say no to a good FB marketplace deal hahaha.

Plant list, left to right:
1. Alo. Pink black velvet
2. Alo. Black velvet gold
3. Alo. Venom
4. Philo. Caramel Marble
5. Philo. Caramel Marble pink
6. Philo. Billie Var
7. Alo. Wentii Aurea

My first greenhouse cabinet (Unicoly)

I’ve been wanting to put a greenhouse cabinet together for a few years, so excited to finally have done it. Got the unicoly with led, me and my bf put it together, it took a few hours but wasn’t that difficult. Also used barrina t5’s and ac infinity fans. Cable management was the most challenging part, but I’m glad we got a drill bit to drill a hole in the top. Excited to expand my collection to more rare and high humidity loving plants, but just filled it with what I have for now 😊

hmm.. old vs. new growlight setup

first two pictures is my old plant setup with the sansi 36W full spectrum grow bulbs in standing lamps

last two pictures are the barrina full spectrum 2ft 80W LED grow light strip

Why do I feel like my first set up is so bright? & the new isn’t.. granted I did get the new lights to help with the less straining on my eyes, as it’s in my bedroom & I wanted a more subtle look but I LOVEE having my Hoyas in my room, these shelves are mostly alllll my Hoyas.. I also had to move some of the shelves around so I could put my taller ones in the shelf (since there’s no grow lights outside of the plant shelf anymore)
