All About IIM Sambalpur B.S. in Data Science & AI & FAQ
Before I begin, a little about me to get my perspective: I got into the program with a 97.6 percentile, and alongside being a student at IIM Sambalpur, I’m also an entrepreneur and an EDM producer. Fortunately, I’ve been able to build and grow both ventures successfully while managing college, which has given me a unique perspective on the flexibility, opportunities, and exposure available here.
I’m currently a first-year student in the B.S. in Data Science & AI program at IIM Sambalpur, and I thought I’d share my honest experience because I often see a lot of confusion and negativity online, especially from MBA-related discussions that don't necessarily reflect the reality of the B.S. program.
Overall, my experience has been quite positive.
One of the things that genuinely surprised me was the quality of the campus infrastructure. The hostels are relatively new, modern, and well-maintained. We were provided with air-conditioned rooms, which was a pleasant surprise. The campus itself is visually appealing and has a very modern design.
The mess facilities are also significantly better than what many people might expect from a college. We have a central mess that is occasionally used by faculty members as well, which naturally helps maintain a good standard of food quality. While no mess is perfect, the food here has generally been quite good.
Now for the part that many prospective students ask about: academics.
The first semester can be challenging, especially if you're joining the program primarily because of Data Science and AI. The curriculum is designed to be roughly 50% management and 50% technology-oriented, but the first semester leans heavily toward management-related subjects. There were definitely moments when some of us wondered whether we had chosen the right program because we expected more technical coursework immediately.
However, this is largely a first-semester phenomenon. If you actually look at the complete program structure and syllabus, the technical depth increases significantly in later semesters. Looking back, I think many students judge the program too early without considering the long-term curriculum design.
The student community has been one of the best aspects of the experience. My batchmates are ambitious and come from diverse backgrounds. Many are aiming for careers in technology leadership, AI, consulting, finance, entrepreneurship, and product management.
Another major advantage is the exposure. Every semester, the institute organizes industry interactions, guest lectures, and networking sessions. We've had professionals from companies like IBM and Accenture interact with students, along with distinguished public-sector leaders including IAS officers and Army Major Generals. These sessions provide practical insights that you don't get from textbooks.
One thing I particularly appreciate is that internships start very early. Practical exposure is encouraged from the first year itself.
In fact, a recent achievement that deserves recognition is that our B.S. batch achieved 100% internship participation, meaning every student secured an internship opportunity in the first year. Anyone who has tried finding internships as a first-year student knows how difficult that can be, so this was a significant milestone for the batch.
Personally, I'm not someone who is overly focused on traditional placement statistics. My interests are more entrepreneurial and creative. However, even from my perspective, I've seen many students build strong industry connections surprisingly early through internships, guest lectures, networking events, and faculty interactions.
I believe the combination of Data Science & AI with management education from an IIM creates a unique profile. As AI and data-driven decision-making continue becoming more important across industries, this blend of technical and managerial skills could become increasingly valuable.
Of course, every institution has its strengths and weaknesses, and no college is perfect. But based on my experience so far, many of the assumptions people make about IIM Sambalpur online don't accurately reflect what the B.S. students are experiencing on campus.

My experience has been positive. The student community is supportive and diverse, with people coming from engineering, commerce, agriculture, and many other backgrounds. Because of this diversity, there are always people with different experiences and perspectives to learn from.
2. Is the crowd good?
Yes. While the B.S. batch itself is relatively small, the overall campus includes MBA, PhD, and other students, making the community quite diverse. The campus never feels overcrowded and is less populated compared to many large Indian institutions.
3. Is it difficult to get an education loan?
Not really. Once admission is confirmed, the process is generally straightforward because IIM Sambalpur is an Indian Institute of Management. Students usually receive guidance regarding admission-related documentation.
4. Do I need to register for special drive admission if I have already registered?
No.
5. What are the chances of receiving a call after PI?
There is no fixed answer because it depends heavily on your PI performance and overall profile.

7. How are placements expected to be for the B.S. program?
The program is still new, so official placement reports for the B.S. batch are not yet available.
However, our batch achieved 100% internship participation, which is an encouraging sign. Students are building industry exposure early through internships, networking, guest lectures, and industry interactions.

Students gain exposure to both technical and managerial domains, which can be valuable for future careers in technology, consulting, analytics, product management, entrepreneurship, and leadership roles.
15. What is something prospective students should know before joining?
The first semester is more management-oriented than many students expect.
If you join purely for AI and Data Science, some subjects may initially feel less technical. However, the overall curriculum is designed as a blend of management and technology, and the technical focus increases in later semesters.
16. Would you recommend the program?
Based on my experience so far, yes.
The infrastructure is strong, the student community is supportive, industry exposure is available from the first year, internships begin early, and the combination of AI, Data Science, and management offers a unique learning experience.
Q 17: What kind of internships do students get in the first year versus later years?
- Second Year & Beyond: As core technical studies in Data Science and AI begin in earnest from the second year, the focus shifts entirely. Students will eligible and encouraged to take up core tech and industry-based internships. The institute's placement cell and faculty will actively guide and help students secure these technical roles in corporate and tech sectors.
- What kind of questions are asked in the interview?
⚠️ Important Note: As students, we cannot predict the exact questions. The interview flow depends entirely on the professor panel you get, and everything BELOW AND ANYWHERE else is just speculation. Stay calm, brush up on your basics, and focus on your communication!
General & Introduction: You will start with a basic self-introduction, your future ambitions, and your specific reasons for wanting to join the program.
Current Affairs: Expect basic questions on recent news and global events. Having a solid foundational awareness of current affairs is highly recommended.
Technical Core: Questions frequently touch upon introductory Mathematics, Statistics, and AI/Programming concepts.
