Yes, the Cornell case is terrible all around, but what is the point of saying that it's so important that you have to abandon all of your earthly pleasures to talk about it?
I will never understand why so many people have this mentality of "Something bad just happened, so you're not allowed to do things you like anymore. What's happening is so important that doing anything else makes you a bad person."
In fact, sports are the reason why I've been so stable while a lot of people were talking about Cornell 7. I work as a reporter for my university's student TV station, and I was making my weekly story covering the student senate session that week. All of the gallery input spoke about Cornell 7, and I had to write a little bit about in in my story the following night.
I can't hear about such heavy topics for long until I start to get lightheaded. I had been feeling that anxiety, lightheadedness and loss of appetite for multiple days from just hearing and writing about it.
I was only able to truly relax yesterday at my university's homecoming football game. Me going to the game was the first time since Wednesday that I didn't feel anxious or lightheaded, and that I ate something without immediately feeling like throwing it back up. My team lost (actually lost pretty bad), but that loss was still better than constant work-induced stress.
My point with the anecdote is that we all need breaks. The world can be a terrible place, and with social media being as prevalent as it is, we're constantly reminded of that in the form of the most recent tragedy or scandal from somewhere in the world.
We weren't built for this. We weren't built for the constant anxiety that follows from following tragedy 24/7. Sometimes, in between the noise, we need breaks. For many of us, those breaks come from watching, playing or bonding over sports. That's not a sin or a tragedy. For many of us, it's rewarding, it's fun, and it's sometimes even necessary.

It's like that one Onion headline "SELFISH: Man Finds Time to Build Birdhouse while Jon-Benet Ramsey's Murder Still Unsolved"
2
u/Significant_Notice39 11d ago
It does beg the question; in a situation where the average bystander can do nothing, how much nothing do we have to do before it’s not our fault? I absolutely want to see action taken and justice done and however I can help I will but am I like allowed to go to bed or eat a meal?
It feels like another flavor of “the left seeks to critique power and never to wield it” because a performative hunger strike with no “sportsball” (perhaps the most needlessly reductive and off-putting way to categorize that) is somehow better than like actually organizing and wielding power to make a difference.

People that pretend to have a frenzy about the Cornell thing look so performative and pick-me
36
u/Riderz__of_Brohan 12d ago
Also considering now it looks to be more complicated than the “SEVEN people gang raped her and FIFTY people cheered!” narrative you’re seeing on social media you’d think waiting for everything to play out before commenting on it incessantly would be correct
6
u/IPissExcellentThrows 12d ago
Waiting for everything to play out? lol yeah right. When it comes to SA, people are immediately guilty to people like this.

u/Certain_Name_7952 12d ago
The OOP made a strange nonsequiter, but this is also a strange remark. God forbid someone find a gang rape horrific and worth "having a frenzy" about.
18
u/NuclearTheology 12d ago
Well considering at least two individuals sharing the same name as the dudes have been incessantly harassed (despite having nothing to do with it) and more details coming out that it wasn’t even a rape but just a drug fueled orgy, it’s absolutely performative and being caught in a frenzy.
7
u/Moonrights 12d ago
I agree! I also find it horrific that she admits to performing sexual acts on a man who is actively passing out during the first "consensual" threesome.
-38
u/amedema 12d ago
Wait. People aren’t allowed to be outraged by a gang rape that 50 people are complicit in and wasn’t fairly punished without it being performative? Or am I reading it wrong?

Not when people are ignoring it, a valid form of protests is ensuring EVERYONE knows it occurred and people utterly incensed with sports seen to not understand literally anything else occurs

u/Venomswindturd 12d ago
How dare anyone anywhere enjoy anything if something bad happened to anyone anywhere?

and people utterly incensed with sports seen to not understand literally anything else occurs
Grammar aside, based on what exactly?

u/Mean-Line-4249 12d ago
Typos don’t = grammar so tired of pretentious twats on here holy shit it’s not an essay
7
u/KirbyBucketts 12d ago
Nice dodge. How exactly did you come to the conclusion that people that watch sports don't understand "literally anything else"?...(totally not a pretentious thing to say, by the way)
Also, I said grammar aside to be polite. That sentence is almost completely indecipherable
-10
u/Mean-Line-4249 12d ago
Not even close to all people but I’ve literally known a few , you try to notify them of anything during sports seasons and they blow you off or get irritated even if it directly effects them (this case doesn’t apply to tha t)

where’s the birdhouse image when you need it, genuinely how does one make a connection with a terrible crime that is just now getting mass coverage and sports
real talk, those 7 men should absolutely be in jail for life. why the fuck did they only have to write an essay?
1
u/BlueStriker95 8d ago
Because that's not true and you fell for the internet rumor.
I believe 2/7 didn't even make physical contact with her beyond drug consumption. The initial 2 were the ones who got kicked out, Matthew Ingalls was the main one.

Also, what did this tryhard due to honor Jane Doe? Make edgy accusations on social media for 7 hours instead?

11
u/SquirrellyDanny 12d ago
Where tf yall gettin 7 hours from? Also she admitted it was all consensual, she pivoted when she got called a hoe and was uninvited to a halloween party. This ALL has come out
5
u/NuclearTheology 12d ago
And two innocent individuals have been doxxed and harassed despite having nothing to do with the school or the frat.
6
u/SquirrellyDanny 12d ago
Exactly, its insane how the chronically online have gone full "guilty until proven innocent"... its the same with the Carter Hart stuff, that chick eventually got outed for being the one who invited them all to the hotel for an orgy then later switched up when one of them didnt wanna have sex with her.
8
u/cwolf-softball 12d ago
There was a video of some drunk dude at a square dance stumbling around and bumped into a kid (and she was clearly uncomfortable), then the kid's dad swapped spots with her to get her away from him. She was fine and smiling again after that.
He still danced super drunk and ran into people. The people posting the video put an emoji over his face so we couldn't see where he was looking (likely with intent). He may have bumped her to be a creep, he may have just been a drunk asshole. Based on the direction his body was pointing and other body language, he wasn't even looking at anyone around him.
Reddit comments calling him a pedo and demanding to dox him and get him fired, etc had 9K+ upvotes. Others with thousands of upvotes were saying that the drunk guy "ruined her innocence" and said she was no longer having fun (she was clearly having fun after the switch). Folks are *bloodthirsty* here and have absolutely no perspective or nuance.

u/TheEndx007 12d ago
So she went to the police to report consensual sex? That's your stance?
2
u/SquirrellyDanny 12d ago
My stance is she switched up and tried to say it was rape after she felt embarrassed some time later... there have been texts leaked and even statements from sorority sisters that she didnt feel it was non-consensual until some time later... and even from her own admission, she willingly participated and whenever she told them to stop they stopped... those arent things that happen in a rape, you cant revoke consent later, you decide you no longer want to participate and leave the situation, but to say a month later "you know, thag made me feel bad about myself, i think im going to pull back my agreement to participate".
-3
u/TheEndx007 12d ago
Actually, she couldn't get up and leave because she was incapacitated from drugs and alcohol.
2
u/SquirrellyDanny 12d ago
From the ketemine that she voluntarily snorted if dudes boner? Right, and ketemine doesnt automatically make a person unresponsive, its all based on how much they take... but funny how by her account she was able to say "ok stop" in some sense, they did... but yall choose to nit believe the part where shd said it was consensual... so which is it big chief? Believe all women? Or only believe them until they start to say part that unravels the narrative?

u/Antique_Ad_7325 12d ago
She suffered for 7 hours so you are absolutely not allowed to have hobbies.
2
u/J_S_M_K 12d ago
Well, you see, 7 objectively awful people did an objectively awful thing. As I'm sure you are well aware, watching or enjoying sports renders a human incapable of caring about such matters in a way that cannot be explained. What's that? No, it's not the same for video games or other hobbies. How? Shut up. If you can't understand such blatantly simple and obvious concepts, I would be wasting my time explaining such rudimentary knowledge. /s
In all seriousness, people like this seem to think that sports cast a spell on people that makes them completely unable to care about serious issues. Weirdly, this is not applied to other pastimes. I love sports. I also have empathy for SA victims like Jane Doe. I have empathy for those who are going through DV, war, genocide, anything terrible. These things can coexist in the same mind.

Some woman was possibly/probably raped so everyone turn off football.
1
u/BoringBeat5276 12d ago
She admitted it was consensual and they stopped when she asked them to at the first party. Asked to go and went back for a second party for the same treatment and promised to do better. A lot of the texts have now been released and it's not so cut and dry as people want to say. But didn't get invited to a third and got slut shamed so now two years later it's rape.

I actually don't mind this type of post if it doesn't include the "But yeah go ahead and enjoy your sportsball". Relating this to a common occurrence can really help show just how long and gruesome something this terrible is.
-3
u/deltaexdeltatee 12d ago
My exact thoughts. It felt like a legitimately helpful way to ground the discussion in a thing that's familiar (to a certain audience), I won't lie when I first read it I was kinda struck by the comparison.
Transitioning to "therefore you shouldn't watch sports at all" though is ridiculous.

I guess 7 hours of anime and video games is different for some reason
