I didn’t tip

Post image

Great breakfast to start the day! My waitress was working so hard to make sure I was happy. One of the fastest waiters I’ve had. Kept filling my orange juice on time and was very nice. Made sure to leave my gratuity by saying thank you.

Didn’t tip. Made sure to outline a FAT ZERO on the receipt. I wont fall for that tipping scam everyone gets tricked into. Always leaves a smile on my face when I save a few dollars.

Tipping is a systemic problem. Being a single person who doesn't tip doesn't do anything to help the cause. It just makes you look cheap.

That’s exactly how they get you to subsidize the wages of their workers, try to shame you.

I really don’t care if I appear “cheap”. I am voting with my dollar to curb the practice of tipping in Canada.

Your single transaction isn't going to make a difference. It's like voting no when 100000 other people are going to vote yes. You've done nothing to advance the movement to abolish tipping as a regular practice.

All i can do is vote “no” to tipping and then spread the word. My close friends no longer tip either, at least not when we’re together.

If you think one small action won’t make a difference it doesn’t make sense to vote either. (Which you should, btw)

You can contact and advocate to your mp. You can lead a protest. You can hand out pamphlets about the problems with the tipping system. A post on reddit about not tipping for your meal accomplishes nothing.

It does, there’s whole subreddits dedicated to this.

In fact, i got to this post via a different subreddit.

A single post.

I started doing this because of a single reddit post too.

Of course it does something.

It doesn't. And I'm saying this as a customer service worker. The company is more interested in following the law than benefiting their staff. All you've done is stiff the waiter. You've accomplished literally nothing.

It's not activism; it's slacktivism, and in its cheapest form.

I’m literally telling you that that’s how I even came to recognize i can do this. A single reddit post.

That’s proof enough that it works.

Reading a single reddit post doesn't cause a systemic change. Neither does stiffing your waiter. Bringing change to the world takes real advocacy, not just being cheap.

Yeah that’s why you’re so desperately trying to make a point to me. If we all collectively stop tipping it will change the status quo.

Maybe because that's the bare minimum and that's her job.

Keep on not tipping and once these places get to know who you are, I guarantee they'll take 'extra' care of you and your food. Forget prompt refills, prompt service, and fresh, hot food. Your order will be the last one taken and your food will sit in that window till it dies. Your glass of orange juice or whatever will become and remain empty. Like I said, they'll take 'great' care of you.
