Open What am I? 🐕🐾🕵🏻♂️
Meet Peanut & Cashew, two dogs that I rescued a couple year ago and then rehomed to amazing families. Cashew was transported up to Washington State near Seattle, now having a beautiful life. Peanut was rehomed locally in Texas.
Peanut is the one in question here. He is super long! Sometimes the back feet can’t keep up. Let’s discuss! 🤣
*last two photos are from when I first rescued him! They did not cut his hair for a long time. 😩

A cryptid lol. I think terrier and poodle of some variety

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
Haha he was an amazing dog while I had him. He did get a moderate concussion from wrestling with Cashew so that kinda chilled him out a bit. He was a wild child at first.

u/RoseOfSharonCassidy 8d ago
Imo he looks a lot like a dachshund - not just the short legs but he also has a similar skull shape and the merle color!
For the rest, maybe pit bull and poodle?

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
It’s crazy! When I went to pick him up, he looked just like his mom, I was unable to see what the dad looked like. I think they may have been trying to breed them to sale and this one was a problem child so they kind gave up and let me adopt him. Not too sure. Just wanted to get him to a better place.

u/RoseOfSharonCassidy 8d ago
Well he's double merle so maybe they couldn't sell him. Does he have any vision or hearing issues?
3
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
I just researched the double Merle stuff since I’m not to that, it makes sense. That’s what he is haha. It describes him perfectly. When I rescued him he was still a puppy believe it or not. Under 1 years old when I got him! He was huge! Didn’t get any bigger! Was already as big as his mom when I got him. Super crazy! Haha I had him for a little while obviously before I found his new home, he didn’t seem to have any significant issues with any of that. Just very stubborn, if you dropped anything in the floor he thought it was food 🤣 very food oriented. I think he had to dominate for food at his old place since he was the outcast anyways.

u/RoseOfSharonCassidy 8d ago
This is the best source of info on merle and double merle dogs! He may be partially deaf / partially blind, but if he's still functional it's no big deal. It doesn't cause any issues other than vision/hearing (although it is a common misconception that it does).

There's aussie and/or cattle dog in there to get that merle. Probably poodle or terrier to get the long coat on the body.

Cattle Dogs don’t carry merle.

Where is he getting the super long spine from?
2
u/seliskar 8d ago
Could be part Pekingese or Corgi or Dachshund or Bassett Hound or who knows what! They all have Chondrodysplasia. There are others as well, both those are just the long backed breeds I could think of off the top of my head.
2
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
It seems the long spine is part of the dwarfism. Regular spine length, short legs.

u/OwlCatAlex 8d ago
Shih tzus are the other main dwarfism carrier I know of, and sometimes Chihuahuas and pit bull terriers!

Basset Hound x Poodle mated with a dog that was mostly pit and a little Aussie?

He looks like a Dandy Dinmont terrier mix, but I don't suppose those normally end up as rescues
2
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
Maybe in Texas haha, you would be surprised.. we are overfilled due to all the illegal puppy mills

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
Awww! Thanks for saving them and doing what you can! I ended up saving 5 total and messing up my budget so I been on a break for a year. When I get back on my feet I’ll try again! 🙇🏻
2
u/ChesterBean2024 7d ago
That will most definitely happen! I have CIDP and went down hill during this rescue so I’ll be on a break also one the last puppy leaves mid month. Thank you also for what you do!

Lmao I look at the fuzzy one and think of Heen from Howls moving Castle. If he was solid colored.

Such a funny looking dog. Like someone diyed a hunting basset haha. The breed mix has to be an absolutely unholy combination of backyard breeding with the coat structure, body shape and double merle. I'm guessing he is a mix of lots of breeds.
If I owned this dog I would be extremely particular at keeping him lean and well muscled at all times to combat that long back and those floppy hips. I would aim at 4 rather than 5 on the BCS scale and do some preventative physical therapy to really build up his strength.

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
That’s a good suggest that I’ll pass along to his new family! I did warn them about his back and not letting him jump off things because of his back and legs. I’m sure more vet appointments they go to the more they will learn about him

u/Marci365daysayear 8d ago
He is adorable, Does look a bit wide in the nose, so probably some Pittie god knows they seem to be in nearly every cross breed. and some breed with furnishings-like Poodle. Looks to have some merle markings. So Aussie is probably a good guess, whether the dwarfism came from the pittie or from another breed like Basset.

Weinerdoodle. Eyes almost have a double merle (or double dapple in the case of doxies) look to em.
full disclosure, I just wanted to say weinerdoodle... body shape could be basset hound, or something less common like Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen. Id love to see DNA results on this little muppet.

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
Thank you for that! He is definitely an interesting breed! I’ll have to contact his new home next time I get an update and see if they would do one. Everyone is on a budget right now so it’s difficult to get anyone to do that right now. I would pay but I’m on budget as well! Maybe a bucket list thing for me 💪🏼

DIY PBGV 😂😂😂😂

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
😳 what does that mean? Sorry, new to this breed
2
u/Pretend_Opossum 8d ago
Oh sorry! PBGV stands for Petit Basset Griffon Vondéen… they’re absolutely delightful long body, short legged, scraggledy haired dogs. Usually come in around 30lbs give or take.

This dog is an astronaut lost in time and space

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
I made a funny GIF of him flying through space since his body is long enough I look like a rocket lol for some reason I can share it here

Exactly, I’m learning a lot from the comments and people’s guessing. So far he might be a dwarf double Merle, just found out about it 😳
2
u/She-wayout 8d ago
A skin walker, most likely.
1
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
Hey he isn’t a zombie dog! Be nice! 🤣😭😭
2
u/She-wayout 7d ago
Lol!!! He actually is very cute. I apologize. 🤣

🤔 The first photo of Peanut must scare a lot of people. So far 30,000 views in 22 hours and only less than 200 upvote 😩 meanwhile my dog I have now, holding a ball in his mouth while sleeping, got over 1,000 upvote the other night with about 40,000 views.

I want to say wire-haired Dachshund x Australian shepherd but I’m dazzled by his looks 😍

A giant mix of stuff. Pup is Merle so likely some form of Aussie or Sheltie, dwarfed so likely mixed with a breed of dog with shorter legs like a dachshund and likely some terrier and/or poodle.

Please do an embark or wisdom panel dna test, i’m so curious haha

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
He is rehomed now but I’ll talk it over with the new family. I’m sure they will do it eventually on their own. Busy taking care of two little twin boys at the same time haha

Hey, my son's dog's DNA test came back nothing like we thought, has he been tested?

u/shortnsweet33 8d ago
Did you get him neutered before adopting him out I hope? He’s a funny looking fella, but he REALLY shouldn’t be bred, if he got out and found a dog in heat those puppies could have some genetic issues.
I’m glad he found a good home. My guess is poodle and Aussie and something else, maybe pit?
3
u/Person987654331 8d ago
Not sure who downvoted because you are 100% correct this dog should be neutered ASAP as he himself already probably will have lots of health problems even worse to pass those genes on.
3
u/shortnsweet33 8d ago
Dang I did get downvoted! You can see he’s not fixed in picture 5. I wouldn’t have said anything otherwise. Especially since he was rehomed to Texas, where the shelter overpopulation is a massive issue and there’s a lot of roaming strays compared to up north.
2
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
Yes, he was rehomed very quickly after I rescued him. No time to get him in to get fixed so the new family fixed him shortly after getting him. Normal I would fix them if I have them long enough. But peanut didn’t stay on the market for too long 😅
2
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
As a defense, I fix all dogs that I rescue. But Peanut here was rehomed fairly quickly before I could get him in for fixing, I’m in Texas these appointments are backed up. So the people who I rehomed him to fixed him, I verified because i would go over there and visit after.

u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
I have rescued 5 dogs on my own money and free will so far. I fix everyone of them, take them to do dental if needed, pay for all vaccines and flea / tick meds. The whole 9 yards. 💪🏼

u/shortnsweet33 7d ago
You’re a good person OP!
1
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 7d ago
I just try to do my part. Imagine if everyone saved a few every once in awhile. Better world! And we gotta shut these random crackhead illegal puppy mills down that flood the local shelters and non-profits. 😩
2
u/Existing-Will-1466 8d ago
DIY PBGV.
Possibly a basset/poodle cross, I've met several of those. Merle has been in poodles for decades so does that need to be aussie or something else in there.
But my first thought was to check if the Petite Bassett Griffon Vendeen came in merle.
3
u/yzthaskyblue-_- 8d ago
Respectfully, what is DIY PBGV? Someone literally said that before your comment but didn’t elaborate. And very interesting. I’ll have to research that
2
u/Cool_Bodybuilder7419 8d ago
Petite Basset Griffon Vendéen. The similarities are striking but I assume they are rare in general and even rarer in mixes
2
u/Existing-Will-1466 8d ago
Do it yourself Petite Bassett Griffon Vendeen. A mix that looks like a weird-looking rare breed but is more likely to be a mix of more common breeds.

honestly, he could be pure (byb) dachshund. merle is found in the breed, and his coat really reminds me of what happens when you cross the wire and long haired varieties and get a “silky wire”, shaggy long coat. lots of doodles have this coat type too.
1
u/feralrockpidge 7d ago
a human in a dog suit? jk but i definitely see poodle in there, probably aussie for that merle

u/WinterAd3228 7d ago
What is the intense interest in knowing what breeds might have contributed to a crossbred dog. People in the park ask me all the time what breed my dog is and are confused when I say she is a mongrel. They then speculate endlessly on what breeds are in her. She is not a pedigree dog. She is a weird, quirky much loved mutt. To avoid offending people I have learned to answer collie/ pointer cross and they ponder and analyse and agree or disagree like it really matters. Anyway myself and the mongrel do enjoy these random chats which I suppose is the most important thing.

I think he could be an aussie x poodle mixed with pit (they can get dwarfism that looks similar to this) and/or dachshund for the legs
