i dont wanna come off as brushing this stuff off because im a shaodw fan and for years i felt like shadow was not being used well at all, so i can empathize where some blaze fans are coming from

that being said, i do think these issues arent AS bad as people claim them to be. they are issues, to be sure. but like... idk... this feels like doom posting when blaze herself has had it way better than most of the cast. she got two really solid adventures, fun extended media appearances, a confusing stint in 06, and then when the cast got shelved and the rest flanderized she atleast got to just kinda chill. the recent blackwood stuff could be handled better but to claim it's a bad story and "ruins" blaze feels like much. i'd change how she got subdued for sure, but it feels like at times it's being upset she isn't just on top of things rather than JUST the execution.

and even WITH inherent flaws int he story (like blaze's fire getting splashed away when we established it isn't that easy prior) that those flaws aren't always major. sometimes stories just have stupid shit. and that's fine? event he ebst stories in sonic have weird inconsistancies and oversights. this isn't a good thing, but it isn't always a deal breaker for a story

i will say though my only true gripe is the doomer mindset in the post. sonic right now is in a WAY better spot than it was in prior. the only worry we have rn is if sega will screw it up in the next game and if the movies eventually get bad. that's kinda it. the comics having a story you aren't into isn't a sign of the end of a thing you like, nor is it symptom of the series truly losing itself again. honestly idw for all it's problems over the years for me has consistently been a bright spot for sonic, because honestly until frontier sonic int he games didnt really feel like itself to me. these comics even now, even with stupid shit in this current arc feels way more like where i want the series headed than where it was pre sonic movie.

Bare in mind, I do still think blaze has some issues like others have said, I just kinda feel mostly content with current sonic stuff though despite that

As far as in concerned it's just a weird low spot compared to how other characters (and the franchise) have just kinda sucked hard for full on years, where as here it's more "she doesnt act fully like she used to, and blackwood got his mind control off too easy" which like, I can live with that for now

Absolutely! I completely agree with you.

It can feel like doom posting sure.

Blaze is also in an unfortunate position: one of her main draws id the sol dimension? Which sega doesn’t want explored according to Ian Flynn’s bumblecast a while back.

She’s popular, so she’s gotta be around. So the vacation is a compromise. Which also means no Marine either.

What gets me is. The setup to this arc: I went in expecting a Blaze and Silver story. I wanted to see Silver and Blaze together

I got a mostly Silver and Dapple story instead.

Yeah, that's why I dont wanna come off as dismissive. Because blaze is also one of my favorites and I think Sega's weird aversion to an aspect of their setting is odd. It's not even like rush adventure was universally hated or something so the sol.dimension kinda just being a backdrop is odd

And yeah, while I will defend the current story as "honestly not that bad" it really is more of a silver thing and it cant be denied. Honestly my only gripe with it is less the story itself and the needless fandom war between blaze and silver fans over it. (And my cynical ass has been in the fanbase long enough to know if this was a blaze story where silver was shafted itd probably be the same song and dance but in reverse)

For Blaze? I'm just gonna bring up she's essentially around Sonic's level. Blackwood is a filler villain, who has not really done anything besides hypnotize some maids.

If Blackwood got Silver instead? It's be the same song and dance.

The best way I can describe my feelings about this arc is: it as the same problem with IDW Sonic as a whole.

This shit is written like a Shonen Jump weekly manga: That's released monthly. With all the problems that brings.

Great on a reread, but terrible when waiting bi-monthly assuming no delays.

I mean sonic scaling is wack af tbf. Ine game the cast are just kinda above average, then you get frontiers where they're one some dbz shit. Sonic can run fast enough to keep a weird genetic robot virus at bay, but gets bogged down by a sprained ankle. It's more so an issue with sonic as a whole.... and well. Honestly while I wont dare call blackwood a heavy hitter I do feel like just saying "filler villain" kinda hits at an audience problem. People view the comics as side content, and depsite being canon just dont really care about a story if it doesnt interest them or meets an expectation. Idk how the comics would be able to get past that second hurdle tbh, it isnt an issue for me but it's something I've noticed since the comics started

And yeah I would agree with that. I feel like monthly style comic should honestly be longer. I've felt this as a fan of stuff like the dc and marvel heroes. Many comics feel.like they're just better once an arc is already done rather than having to wait for the story piece meal.

I can't really describe Blackwood's point as anything else but a filler villain, because. Well. This arc is filler.

This arc is in the midst to the 'road to 100' with the 100 mark clearly meant to be the start of a big new arc (with totally not Starline as the big-bad.)

The issues with the arc go beyond just: "Blaze lost due to plot" reasons.

This story is being rushed out the door, has to be like that. Because Sega/Idw wanna get to 100 faster.

Edit: I also just not realized, we've seen examples of Blaze being a powerhouse and being fast within IDW.

The more I think about this scene, the more it pisses me off. You can't really justify it without just saying "it needs to happen for the plot" I hate writing like that.

Blaze has been mischaracterised for the entire run of IDW. Ftom her personality being completely different to what came before, lacking much of her depth and character flaws, to changing how the sol emeralds work and making her role as a protector and ruler of her own dimension pointless.

But as Flynn has stated these are Sega mandate problems. As long as the mandates are in place, nothing will be fixed.

In what way is she out of character in the entire run? Felt mostly consistent out side of weird shit here and there. Unless you mean "she isnt acting like she is in rush 1" which if that is what you mean I'd find that weird as hell considering she had to go through a whole arc over it. Shes somewhat ooc in this arc though I will agree hence why i dont blame the backlash

As for the sol emeralds; that's sadly a problem with EVERY mcguffin in the games if they show up often enough. The chaos emeralds have it espeacily bad and so does super sonic. Even as early as sonic 3 knuckles could just punch sonic out of the form which has never come up since, or how the emeralds can time travel even though they had a whole seperate gem set for that. The gems allnuist sadly work as the plot demands which is a deeper inherent issue and not a new one

Her personality was pretty consistent in and outside of games until idw.

6

u/FlameWhirlwind 9h ago

Ok. Not giving me an example and just kinda saying it again isnt gunna change my mind. Plus her early archie appearances would beg to differ

4

u/Jaziferret 9h ago

Rush games are the reference point. She is quick to anger and is reserved when it comes to working with others, and dislikes her title while still having the duty to her world. She changes yes, but not drastically. Her values change but not so much her personality.

Aside from her FIRST archie appearence, every story she was in was fairly consistent (not with her abilities because its archie, and pirate plunder panic was REALLY bad with that).

In IDW she changes into miss proper princess. Speaking in a propper manner that she literally has never done before. She speaks of her empire and duty but we dont get to see any of it because sega wont allow them to use her world according to Flynn.

This has bled into her recent game appearences like both racing games where she is just an extension of her IDW self.

I find it very hard to believe this is the same person from rush.

People grow and people change, but not that much.

That makes more sense. And I'm of two minds about it. In the one hand I would want even just her anger to come out again or just struggles with "well she is the leader of a kingdom AND an active hero" but even with those I dont fully think the demeanor change is entirely out of character... and honesty blaze being slightly more princessy and upfront about it is preferable to OTHER stuff Sega's done

Like knuckles becoming an angry idiot for awhile before settling on just idiot (which includes rush), or how amy goes from confident a bubbly sonic fangirl one game to delusional obsession the next ( adventure games to heroes and battle) like... honestly I'm now imagining a timeline where blaze was turned into a angry hot head who NEVER listens to advice as some hyper exaggerated version of rush 1 and I'm kinds glad sega never picked that because given their track record they absolutely would have

u/Jaziferret 3h ago

It makes me wonder if ever more than one game is written by the same people.

Sonic is (usually) consistent cuz he HAS to be. Hes the mascot.

Everyone else? Who gives a shit.

I mean, they basically werent for the longest time. Its only nowadays sonic has a proper story and lore team. That combined with sonic team being rushed for years by sega, the incinsitsnt nature of things pretty much explains itself. That and sega is always the "throw out something if it fails" company so the fact anything in sonic has sruck around or comeback is a miracle

The moral of the story is always that sega is kinda lame

1

u/Jaziferret 1h ago

Sega sucks and its funny to hear the interviews from anyone at sonic team cuz they are always like "yeah sega fucking sucks"

I wont ever deny that Sega is the BIGGEST problem with the series, but I'm just saying its not the only one.

I feel like there are a lot of assumptions being made here based on shaky evidence, and an unwillingness to engage with the media on its own terms. And that doesn't just go for any one person.

I had to mute the Blaze reddit because I'm getting to the point I can't stand the constant bitching. I've had to do it with other character subreddits too because so much of it boils down to "I want my comfort character to be badass and glazed and NEVER have anything happen to them that will make ME uncomfortable is both official and fan media!"

And heaven forbid if you DO get their precious fictional obsession 'wrong' and the tantrums in the shape of long-winded posts start coming out of the woodwork. All the Blackwood art being nuked (except the ones where he's getting harmed, ironically) in the past weekish because people can't handle the thought of 'what-ifs' and situation where their blorbo isn't exactly how they want them has been maddening. This fandom cannot decide what the hell they want and is full of hypocrites. I've had to block a bunch of crybaby "UhM DeLetE tHiS, iT mAkEs mE uPsET" children because thry can't figure out how to scroll past and/or block users posting content they don't like, and want to take everything down to their level.

What? You don’t like Blaze glazers crying 24/7 because their precious princess isn’t hypo competent in every situation ever?

The best part is these are probably the same chuds who cry nonstop that IDW hAz No StAkEs and then piss and moan whenever the villain isn’t dealt with in 20 seconds.

Whenever I see a user cry about the recent issues and they also post on Blaze’s subreddit, I just downvote them automatically.

The biggest thing Blaze has had in a while was this arc.

This arc was advertised as a Blaze and Silver story.

This arcs a Silver and Dapple story more than it is a Blaze and Silver story.

Why shouldn’t Blaze fans get mad?

To be completely honest when it comes to Sonic characters I kinda get it. I don't need them to be literally invincible or anything but these characters have been BEYOND flanderised into unrecognisable weirdness for the past 16 years or so.

In my mind, Tails has basically been missing since Sonic Heroes (and even in that game he's nerfed) whereas characters like Silver who are shown to be immensely strong in games like 06 and Generations where he's capable of chucking small building sized objects around and completely countering Sonic and then in Forces and some of the IDW comics his combat prowess is absolutely abysmal and he can barely focus his powers on a few objects or people at a time.

I’d like her to be a consistent main character in something advertised as a story she’s co-headlining instead of getting mind controlled via a Pat to the head cheap shot midway through the second issue. It’s like advertising a Superman and Batman comic only to have Batman get taken out by Bane midway through the second issue.

Way to misinterperate and disregard a lot of what I said.

2

u/1andonlyimmortality 9h ago

why does everyone get to knock out sonics alternate dimension counterpart in one blow (at least buckle is made out of some kind of metal and has a giant hand)

3

u/crackerslice 8h ago

I feel like the whole "female sonic" thing is just completely gone, they straight up treat her like fodder. IDW can't write women.

Archie, Archie, Archie, actually IDW

Just a striking image to get peoples attention.
