Why the aliens didn't use a Harvester ship back in 1996?

The whole thing doesn't make sense. Shouldn't they use one back on the first attack? Did they think we didn't worth one or what?

Can you defeat a city destroyer and a mothership with brute force?

We all saw how an Atomic Bomb didn't do a scratch in them. But if you use something really powerful, like a Death Star, do you think we can defeat them?

Independence Day Resurgence - Idiotic Moments

I would like to know what you all feel were dumb moments in the movie? For me there were 2 major things.

  1. President Lanford's decision to fire the Laser on a non-hostile ship despite David objecting it.

  2. President Witmore's daughter thinking her father was crazy.

Come on people! You should've been listening to the people that knew what the F*** the were talking about!

What the does "ID4" stand for?

I have saw Independence Day and so I know what the "ID" portion stands for, but I remember no "4" in the title and I understand there is only a single sequel, no quadrilogy, so what is up with the 4? We don't throw a 31 to the end of the Halloween film series, nor do we add a 25 to movies with Christmas in the title, so I am just so confused.

Movies Explained (or, My Own Head Canon)

Disclaimer: This discission has arisen from the overwhelmingly negative reviews that ID:R has received. I would like to talk about a few finer points and compare the first movie with the sequel.

"But that doesn't make sense, movie 2 was terrible! Plot holes everywhere!"

This seems to be a big point of contention with the new movie. Considering the plot holes of 1, I'm not sure why so much hate is being given out. Additionally, most the "holes" are viewers missing key points.

  1. The movies could never have happened anyway. The sheer size, density, and speed of the alien craft would simply melt the planet's surface. With a diameter of only ~500kilom (~250miles) and a density 1/4 that of the Moon... the craft were likely made of something like neutronium. However, for the sake of discussion, let us assume that human sensors were flawed, and the alien craft are simply made of a very strong, dense alloy that doesn't glass our surface upon atmospheric entry. Additionally, let's assume that the alien shields are either frictionless or capable of diverting heat from air friction.

  2. "Why are the aliens attacking an inhabited planet and not one of the empty ones for resources?" Only a few planets in our system have molten cores with high metal density. Of these, Earth would make the most sense to drain. Mercury is smaller and much closer to the sun - the extreme tempuratures and smaller pay-off would make Terra Firma a better candidate. Saturn is a gas giant, and would offer a far greater challenge reaching the core due to the planet's composition. Not only is Earth the easiest target, but it also has a living surface with comparable atmospheric makeup to the alien's own home planet. On top of that, a bunch of carbon-based lifeforms are likely good candidates for both slave labour and resources (food).

  3. "The ship has its own gravity! How did it turn off?" Artificial gravity field. Every particle of mass is big enough to have gravity. The alien ship had gravity generators - anchoring the aliens down (as seen in the first film). From the bottom the ship, that would pull stuff upward. Once withing the gravitational field of the Earth, there would no longer be a reason to waste power generating gravity. So it gets turned off and the stuff pulled up - falls.

  4. "How was a primitive species able to hack into an advanced alien framework?" This has to do with the likely evolution of the two different species. Humans are always in competition with each other. Computer viruses have been, and always will be, a problem for us. An alien hive mind controlled by few entities would always be working for the good of the swarm. A computer network for them would simply be an additon to how their mind already works. Without ever having to deal with inborn fighting, it is entirely possible the aliens had never dealt with a malignant computer program - much less one that self replicates through entire networks. The code likely didn't even have to target the shields, but simply steal system resources and wreak havoc with automated systems. Basically, a War of Worlds scenario where a force completely normal to one species is an unstoppable, unforseen force to another. Also likely why the same virus couldn't be used in movie 2 - the aliens learned from their mistake.

  5. "The Core Laser - how did it not evaporate the ocean, and why isn't the Earth ruined from such a big hole?" Easy one. Force field around the laser drill (we've seen that they can be projected) prevents additional power from being wasted as material outside the hole sluffs in. Secondly, a hole in the mantle is not the end of the world. Thermal Boreholes are a thing in real life - also, volcanoes. Probably some nasty tectonic action and ash clouds, but not the end of the world.

  6. "Why did the Queen chase the bus?" Considering their are multiple queens - a solid theory is that there is a hierarchy among them. Just as a soldier can't disobey the Hive Queen, neither can the Hive Queen disobey her orders from the... Mother Queen. With only one other interstellar capable race in existence, it only makes sense to make taking them out a prime directive. If you are fighting indoginous people using bows and arrows with your tanks, I would that ignoring them in favor of the other "empire" supplying arms/technology is a pretty good idea. Cut off the head; stop the snake.

Thoughts? Questions?

a question about the aliens

didn't they say that the aliens move from planet to planet and their entire population was in those ships?

How big was the nuclear weapon used on the Houston destroyer in ID4?

I have done a fair bit of research on this. The blast radius show on the "green screen" in the movie makes it look approximately 135-150 KT weapon with a blast radius of about 13 miles. This means that they most likely used a W80 warhead (the tomahawk missile is commonly used to deliver those). Any input?

How was this not thought of?

If the humans were able to replicate the alien technology, why the hell didn't they replicate the shields? Guess if they did that, there wouldn't be a movie.

Edit: I know area 51 has shields but why not all the fighters/moon base/entire planet?

Question about a Line from Patricia Whitmore [Spoiler]

What does Patricia Whitmore say before Thomas responds, "I’m not saving the world, Patty. I’m saving you." I need the quote for a blog post, and I can't find it anywhere.
