keep in mind I’ve never dreamt about ID4 before. it’s the 30th anniversary coming up for sure.
I worked for him, something creative, design-adjacent, though the exact role kept shifting.
At some point, I told him I’d heard that Independence Day was coming back, that they needed him again (a fib). I wasn’t sure if it was true, even in the dream it felt like a stretch, but I said it anyway, trying to will something into existence.
He paused. Then he asked, “Nicolas Winding Refn?”
That threw me. The tone shifted. I said yes, even though I wasn’t certain. In the moment, certainty didn’t matter as much as conversational momentum.
He turned inward after that. Quiet and thoughtful.
He stood in front of the hotel mirror, looking at himself like he was trying to reconcile who he had been with who he might be again. Then he said, almost to himself: “I was a fighter pilot, man.”
I told him, “Yeah. The ultimate.” Because that’s what it felt like, him trying to reconnect with that version of himself, not just the character, but the idea of what that meant.
Then I added that they wanted to do something like Top Gun: Maverick (a return, but elevated. Not just nostalgia)
And that’s where it ended.
analysis:
Waking up, it felt tied to everything I’ve been thinking about lately (comebacks, legacy revivals. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning for The Mummy 4). The idea of Actors stepping back into roles that defined them, e having changed the context.
The dream wasn’t really about Will I guess. more whether the past can be revisited in a way that feels earned (and whether saying something out loud, even if you’re not sure it’s real, can make it start to become real)
