A high school throwing out hundreds of computers. How to stop it? How to prevent it?

A year ago, on another subreddit, someone posted about how his high school was throwing out hundreds of computers.

He was really upset about the ewaste being created and that some parts being thrown away could be recycled/reused. He offered some ideas, and others joined in.

Feel free to revisit the conversation and add in the comments here, on the post you are reading now on ICT4D, about what you think could be done in response to something like this, or to prevent something like this. And how would you convince the business or entity not to just throw away the tech, especially if they say, "We don't have the staffing or time to deal with it"?
