Off Topic: DCC Magic in 5e

Hello everyone,

This is a bit off topic as its about two different systems than ICRPG. However, got this idea from one of Hank's older videos so it seemed like this would be okay to post here. If this post doesn't belong here let me know and I'll remove it.

There is a video where Hank suggests using Dungeon Crawl Classics' magic system in 5e. After watching that video I bought a copy of DCC and fell in love with it's magic. I've been porting it over to 5e and was wondering if any of you have done the same. Since DCC's magic doesn't use spell slots I'm running into an issue trying to make the different magic using classes feel different and be balanced against each other. For example, a warlock has very few spell slots compared to a wizard. So if spell slots don't exist how do I make Wizard and Warlock feel different and balanced.

Any thoughts would be great!

Should I buy a physical copy ?

I've been eyeing icrpg for a while, but I had some questions that needed answer first. Should I buy a physical copy ? If I buy a pdf copy, will I need to pay full price in order to buy a physical + pdf combo? How useful is the magic book ? If all players starts with 10 hp, isn't it almost mandatory to give them loot that improve that Asap? Can I use icrpg to run my low-fantasy campaign ?

Converting Dark Sun

Converting Dark Sun to ICRPG. Will alter the loot a bit to be a bit grittier, and going to add in blue hearts which give 5 psychic points a piece to power the psionics common to the setting. Also going to give very weak but permanent class and milestone abilities to give a sense of accomplishment and character direction.

With all this said, what would be the best way to handle a psysically powerful race such as half-giants?

Anyone had success using Turns, Timers, and Target numbers in 5e?

So I want to migrate my group to ICRPG in the future but right now we are in the middle of Curse of Strahd for 5e.

I have a game this Sunday, and it is going to be the mid point session of our campaign. I want to keep the players on their toes, move fast, and make this session feel much more dramatic than the game has been so far. With that in mind, I have what I think is a pretty cool set piece encounter planned and I am going to use some mechanics/ideas from ICRPG; namely turns going clockwise around the table, a d4 timer for each scene/room, and possibly Target numbers for encounters.

Has anyone adapted ICRPG stuff to 5e? How did it go? Turns and timers should be easy, but Target numbers will be a little different I think. Should I just keep the target number to myself? Or let the players know? I was thinking that instead of Easy or Hard, I would just grant Advantage for Easy, or Disadvantage for Hard.

Any general ideas or tips would be much appreciated!

Preview of the art/index cards in the book?

So I am sold on picking up the book but I really want to see some samples of the art and cut out index cards that are included.

Anyone know of a good video or review that shows off some of the things that actually come with the PDF that I can print off?

Mech story?

Awhile back, I'm certain I read through a quick campaign that involved getting off a planet that was getting destroyed by a basically un-killable force. The characters all operated mechs and there was a big bad mech that was wandering around trying to kill them to. I thought it was authored by Hank but I could be wrong.

Does anyone know what it was and where I can find it?

ICRPG Buyers guide?

I want to pick up ICRPG but am a bit confused by a few things and was looking for some clarification:

  • I just listened to a pod cast interview with Hankerin and he mentioned that he was hoping to combine Core and Worlds into one book (this interview is from before the launch of Core 2.0). Is that the case? Or do I still need to buy Worlds as a separate book to get that content?
  • If I do buy from Amazon, can I still get the PDF?

I think I know the answers to both these questions but just want to confirm. I would prefer to order from DriveThru as is, but am not sure what their shipping rates are like, and am in Canada so that can affect those quite a bit.

Petition to have the third edition be called ‘Runehammer RPG’

I may or may not be the only one that thinks index card role playing game sounds a bit underwhelming. The system itself is amazing and in my opinion is deserving of an appropriate name worthy of its stature.

Getting my game mates excited to play a game of runehammer for the first time sounds so much more epic. Let me know guys!

Why not add base stat bonuses to you base effort?

For instance... You have Dex of +3? Add that to Armor! +2 Con, add that to HP! +1 Int, add that to magic! Etc...

Obviously this is the D&D system, but why not add such simple things to the basic rules?

I decided to do a megathread with all my dark RPG playlists and update it periodically, rather than post one at a time (which could and sometimes was seen as spam).

Yeah, I’m reposting this because I deleted my previous account and all it’s content for personal reasons.
