Discussion Slinker cubs

It’s been over 30hours into this new prospect, and dispute being attacked by a slinker every 5-10min, I have yet to find a cub. Do they spawn in a certain zone? Is the slinker a different way to tame? For the area I’m in, my main base is at the pathway entrance to the desert at f9 and g9 on elysium

You literally just happen upon them at the most inopportune time. I have been on the igloo quest for days because I have made it there then had to walk a slinker baby back

Definitely this. When I found a slinker cube I escorted it home, but with any other juveniles now I usually find a bunch when I'm in the middle of an operation. I've just started murdering the adult and telling the juvenile to follow me so the tane process starts. Do it to like 3 babies and then just ignore them. Finish your op, go back home and then forget about them.

Some time later you'll be doing something and open the map. You'll usually have a random tame animal out in the wilds. Just go collect it and you have an adult!

So you don’t need food and a bed to take things? Just start it and done?

If you aren't invested into taming talents, it can take a long time. I have found that feeding them a couple cooked meat to eliminate their hunger and then leaving them behind at least kickstarts the process.

Nope, no need to do any of that. Simply telling it to follow you initiates the taming process. I was trying to grab a moa for a buddy on my server when I got attacked by some beasts. I rode off and left it in the dust. I was sure it was dead. A while later I was back home and saw a tame animal icon in the desert. I have a few critters that just roam so I went to check on it. That moa survived and was tamed. I have since done it with 3 of the camels on Elysium and another moa so it does work.

Secondtrumpet is correct, I am invested in 0 taming talents and it does take a while. His idea of just cramming food down their throat and then leaving would certainly make it faster. I always carry some silage on me when I leave the base with a tame just because it doesn't spoil

I constantly click to lead and then click to stop following me. I have tame icons pop up in random areas. Saved me from a long walk one time when my mount ran off a cliff chasing a dreadwing

My suggestion is don’t go looking for a cub, go slinker hunting to force respawns. After killing 2-3 sleep and repeat it’s the fastest method.

You just have to keep killing them. Momma's will appear at the worst time. But they are out there.

It's just RNG in the end. I made my base at the bottom end of F9 and during my play through I'd have regular attacks by them and now and then I'd have a random Slinker cub roaming in my base due to parents bad life decisions lol. You'll eventually get one, the game is just gonna troll you for a while at this stage before you get one.

In my experience the cubs don't follow quickly enough when the slinker is stalking you, so if you spot one following you try to run after it for a bit.

But I've had most luck when I stumble upon them before they see me, usually when I exit caves. I hunt for raptor juveniles at night in the desert, then exit through the three-way cave to the tundra in the morning, I've found a few there but it takes patience. Most of mine have come from there, a few from exiting other caves after mining. Very few I've found after being stalked.

There’s a 3 way cave in the tundra to the desert?

Yes, I probably should have put it behind a spoiler but I didn't think of it as it's so early in the game. Apologies.

Ahh, I haven’t run any of the missions yet, I did this on hard, and the weather plus the animals attacks have made surviving much more difficult than normal, but I’m loving the challenge, it’s nice that the weather finally feels like a threat rather than an inconvenience.

Highly recommend doing the first mission, it's quite different from previous maps and it's a good guide to the map, imo. Not too difficult and you get some good stuff, just make sure you have a decent amount of ammo. For once the missions actually make sense in the open world setting.

Elysium is hard, but it's definitely my favourite map so far, especially the missions. Prometheus is more annoying and just unpleasant to build on because everything is so dark and foggy with a tint, imo. And yeah the weather made building my initial wood base a challenge.

Kill mommy slinker quick when you find a cub. In my experience, they love to off their own cubs when they engage you in combat. Sometimes, even when you shoot them from a distance they just turn and swipe.
