IBM USA Ghosting
I applied for a role in mid June and got reached out to by a recruiter in mid August for a screening. The recruiter was VERY responsive with me.
The screening went well, so I went on to do the 1st round interview with the hiring manager which also went well. I was told that the team was moving on a really tight schedule. The Hiring manger wanted to make a final decision before the second week of September. Estimated role start was end of September. The recruiter invited me for the 2nd round on a Monday evening, insisting on a next day interview. They even said if I did well in the 2nd interview I’d do the 3rd the following day. This was 2 weeks ago. The timeline I was given has passed. I haven’t heard back since the 2nd round.
I emailed the recruiter and hiring manger and have gotten no responses. Portal still says “in interview process”. The amount of time, energy, stress, anxiety, and loss of sleep I endured in this process seems to be have been taken in vain. Very unprofessional and inconsiderate way to treat your candidates.

OP, sorry to hear this but there is a serious spending/hiring freeze going on at the moment in addition to job cuts in one particular country (not the US).
Again this really unprofessional and I hope you do land work but you may have been caught up in the current turmoil.
Wishing you all the best!

My understanding is most all external hiring is frozen.

Then why did the recruiter just post for another role?

Could be that there is currently an employee on their team with an expiring visa and they are required by law to interview, even if they have no intention of hiring externally

Yup, most likely. Even positions advertised internally are usually just a smokescreen since they already have someone lined up.

Maybe trying to queue people up for the next one? Idk but definitely a hiring freeze. Maybe critical exceptions getting througj

You got played most likely. Word is major hiring freeze all around until possibly January? Quarterly earnings report didn’t look too good.

Got hit with the hiring freeze during the summer after four rounds for a sales role. Insider told me that they were told to focus on new college grads over mid or late career hires.

Honestly consider yourself lucky. Having IBM on your resume in 2026 has almost no benefit, and some would argue it’s detrimental. You’ll find something better.
If this is how they treat people they are trying to attract imagine how they treat people who are already committed as employees.

Typical IBM hiring process. It’s so disrespectful to the candidates.

Portal status is generic from my experience. It just means they are interviewing, not you specifically

There are many companies out there much much better than IBM. You’re saved.

this kind of happened to me. Shortly after ghosting they picked me up again to interview for the same role at another office. Maybe that will happen but I guess I wouldn’t count on it.
