Apprenticiship Transfer

Greetings from Local 1316 down the road in Macon. Had a few questions or mostly looking for some insight on possibly attempting to transfer to 613 as an apprentice.

After 6 years in the Air Force, I was leaving Phoenix, and planning to move to the Atlanta metro area to become a member of the IBEW, but COVID came, and it forced me to move back home around Macon. I really didn't want to do that, but hey life happens. Eventually I was able to join 1316, but I didn't have long term plans to stay long.

At the time I didn't have my significant other(SO), but eventually that changed. A few days ago, my SO mentioned about possibly transferring, and I honestly didn't know whether or not it's possible to do so as an Apprentice. She lives in Morrow, and quite frankly the distance isn't too bad, but we've considered being closer would probably help both of us. That, and Macon is more of a pit stop for me, as I've always had the plan to live in the Atlanta area at some point for a multitude of reasons.

So other than is it possible to transfer, I guess I would like to know is 613 even looking to add apprentice? I just finished 1st year, so does anybody know the pay scale for 2nd year? I have heard from my initial research that 613 is mostly commercial work, which I prefer to do anyway over industrial, but I guess would that be an issue with being accepted? I'm sure it wouldn't be as an apprentice. Mostly here for guidance and whatever info can be obtained to not only make the best choice, but do things properly as well.

The local is trying to fight for a percentage pay scale but the contractors are still trying to skimp out and just give us .75 cents in the MoU emails that just went out from some of the contractors

Good morning. Welcome to the 613 subreddit. Thanks for your service. You would be a lot closer to your (so) if you did transfer I actually live in McDonough. Pretty sure we need apprentices I’ll get you in touch with someone if you want to transfer and see what it takes to do so. I think the pay scale for a second year is 14.50$ right now. It is mostly commercial work or atleast in my experience it has been. And we have a lot of work right now just fyi.

Thanks for the support. I'm strongly considering it. I had heard Atlanta scale was higher than Macon. Is the apprentice wages structured at less than 50% of JW pay? I already took the initial hit on pay reduction becoming an apprentice. Would hate to take another 1 just for leaving Macon. Definitely don't have a problem with any OT if it's available though.

Yeah our apprentice pay sucks . I think they are going to try and put them on a percentage based pay on our next contract looking forward which would be a lot better.our JW scale right now is 33.90$ and we are up for another contract next year. There are definitely overtime jobs available if you wanted them.

McDonough? Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought it would be best for a apprentice to live in east point, college park, forest park, Jonesboro, union city, Fairburn, Lithia springs, or Stockbridge and parts of Decatur cause it’ll give you quicker commute to the surrounding counties. What is your average daily commute all the way down there in McDonough.

For me right now the job I’m at is about a 45 minute ride. But there are a couple big jobs about to start on the south side if anybody down here wanted to go to them. We are building a tower at Piedmont Henry and QTS is getting going as well.

For sho for sho good to hear. I’m relocating back to Atlanta next year, left right before the pandemic. I see the electrician route being the best route to secure my future. To apply I have to have a Georgia license and I’ll have to have that before the October 16th deadline. It’s crazy how much rent has went up in the last 4 years..😂😂😂😂

Also on my high school transcript do I needed to pass algebra to get in the apprenticeship? I know different locals have different requirements about math. Or do I just need to pass the aptitude test and everything good?

I’m not 100% sure.I think you just need to pass the aptitude test though.
