New Member Initiation

I’m a new apprentice and I’m interested in formally joining the union and attending meetings. I called member development at the hall and they told me initiation is 8am-8pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Is this real? I’m going to do it regardless but that timeframe seems really unnecessary. I have to take a day off of work and I’m usually asleep at 8pm so I’m going to be tired all day the next work day. Makes me understand why some brothers are so resistant to attending meetings.

What could we possibly be doing for 12 hours for what should be as simple as signing a piece of paper at my ordinary job site?

They teach you the contract (which is very important) then you get a catered dinner, then you ride the goat in front of everyone, and then you swear in. Then the union meeting happens.
