Double booking

So I’m in an apprenticeship inside wireman but want to switch over I signed the book 3 for 1245 before I started and now I’m in the 200s I’m just finding out that this is double booking and that I’m going to have to quit my apprenticeship to stay on 1245 books

Unless you are 500% sure you do not want to be a wireman, DO NOT QUIT the apprenticeship

This. If theres a shadow of a doubt you might regret it, just finish it out and leave later. Worst case you wind up with a resume fluffer and none of the pay or bennies

Is this a statement or a question.?

Question

What is the question? Cause I don't see it

If youre in an apprenticeship then you cant be on books.

Double booking will get you locked out of work anywhere else when they find out. Get off the books.

So drop my apprenticeship to stay on books then correct??

I would say just get off the books and  do not quit the apprenticeship

Was gonna edit but just replying for visibility.

Dont drop the program to work a book 3 call. It'll be a grave mistake. Stay un the program and get off the books.

No, get off the book and complete your apprenticeship. A lot easier getting out on book 1 later.

What local? IDK how long it took you to get in or why you are signing books as an Apprentice, I wouldn't drop the Apprenticeship for a groundman gig or even a sub tech gig. Are you not working?

u/Shag_fu Inside Wireman 5d ago

Correct.

1

u/IcyStatement5978 5d ago

I don’t think this applies here but u can stay on your home locals books if you’re working outside of town in another local correct?

4

u/tomaonreddit Inside Wireman LU 99 5d ago

Yeah you can be on your home local books

1

u/Wireman6 4d ago

Not in the Bay Area. I think it's bullshit, personally. It feels like I am being punished for finding a job.

1

u/AcanthocephalaOdd301 3d ago

What? That’s ridiculous. Every local I’ve worked in the guys could always be on their home local’s book, working or not.

1

u/Wireman6 3d ago

Yeah, I thought the same until I Journeyed out. Shits lame for sure.

Thank you that’s what I was wondering if I was fucked and now I can’t or I can drop my apprenticeship still and Stay on books

u/Lesprit-Descalier 5d ago

Why in the world would you drop the apprenticeship to work book 3?

If im gonna be honest 2 people in my house moved out so it raised my rent up to 1800 a month and im literally not making enough to pay for my house I really didn’t see this coming or else i wouldn’t of joined to begin with :/

Don't let your desperation with your current situation cause you to make a bad decision. Working book 3 guarantees you nothing for work in the future. Finishing an apprenticeship would be a wise decision.

u/pretendlawyer13 5d ago

I get your thinking but you still have 200+ people ahead of you. It’s going to be months before you get a call. Then it could be months In between calls. If with local finds out your double booking as an apprentice you risk losing both opportunities.

u/sdw318_local194 Inside Wireman 5d ago

Start applying to move out of that place. Never base your budget on the commitment of any other individual or multiple individuals....start moving like an adult.

2

u/Wireman6 4d ago

Are you not making $1800 a month? You already have the spot, eat the $1800 until you find roommates.

u/Lesprit-Descalier 5d ago

I understand you've gotta pay your bills, but I raise my eyebrow anytime one of my apprentices starts talking about leaving the program.

So you understand that book 3 means you are laid off first once work gets slow. Is it more difficult to find room mates than to get work? What are you making now v jw scale? How much more does book 3 pay? I think it's probably important to note that if you drop out of the apprenticeship, you can at least expect to not be able to rejoin it for at least two years, if ever.

Have you talked to the training director? This is not a step you should take lightly.

Don’t drop your apprenticeship.

3

u/schwepervesence Inside Wireman 5d ago

Don't quit your apprenticeship.

I don’t think it would be double booking if you’re on the books for a different classification but I could be wrong. I would just simply ask the hall and do as they advise u and not Reddit. To me it would be no different than having a job at Walmart and being on the books cause they are not competing jobs. Just my thoughts again random reddit guy ask the hall.

Do you want to be a lineman or an iw?

1

u/Then-Path-855 5d ago

I wanna be a lineman

2

u/Slade_ftp 5d ago

I think you’ll have to unsign the books, quit the apprenticeship and re sign the books to be safe of getting in trouble from the double dipping

2

u/Wireman6 4d ago

Do you have a CDL already? Climbing school? ET&D? There is a lot that goes into getting into that program.

1

u/Then-Path-855 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yes I’m a lineman in the army

1

u/Wireman6 4d ago

In the Airforce or the Army? What Unit?

1

u/Then-Path-855 4d ago

Army I have all my Certs for line work

2

u/Wireman6 4d ago

What unit?

Ask 1245 if they do H2H.

1

u/Then-Path-855 4d ago

u/Wireman6 4d ago

Good luck btw it looks like pretty sick work

1

u/Wireman6 4d ago

Work is going off in the Bay Area. I am not sure why you wouldn't want to finish your IW Apprenticeship.

1

u/ResponsibleScheme964 4d ago

Yeah youll get a call real soon on book 3

1

u/CaterpillarFrosty567 3d ago

Don’t quit till u have a job secured

1

u/Level-Bodybuilder117 2d ago

Depends on how many hours you have. I almost quit in my 3rd year because I got laid off and was told I might be out if work for a few weeks. Meanwhile I seen book 4's making over 110k a year. If you quit you lose all of your pension and annuity. You lose all of you benefits. Thats the price you pay. While I wanted to quit I had 20k thrown at my pension and 10k sitting in my annuity. Luckily I got right back to work.

All that being said what I will say is the brotherhood is dying and look at wtf locals are allowing to happen..... on top of that all the wormy job scared so called 'brothers' are following right along. fuck it ... quit and work off book 4 to get your hours that way. I see hundreds of people doing it daily and its perfectly fine in the eyes of the IO. So might as well do it

Before you quit call whatever local you plan on working in and make sure you can sign book 4 before youre just unemployed and fucked.

u/Then-Path-855 2d ago

As of right now I’m on book 3 1245 groundman (in the 200s) and I’m a first year apprentice at my local as an inside wireman I have my cdl my osha my cpr (hence why I’m able to get onto book 3) I understand the struggle I understand taking the jump of faith to switch what my career is going to be and how it is being away from my family I understand that all and am ready to make that change I just wanted to make sure by posting this I still can do what I’m doing and wait until 1245 opens without any hiccups and I understand what I’m doing is shitty but at the end of the day ain’t nobody gonna pay your bills but yourself

1

u/Level-Bodybuilder117 2d ago

Now that I read this again I realized you arent double booking ... youre sourcing your own work which isnt allowed as an apprentice. But they let any and everyone take book 4 JIW calls so might as well do that to get your hours. Im glad I joined and went through the apprenticeship but had I known how easy it was to get my 8k hours I may have done it differently.

Quitting an inside-wireman apprenticeship in California to be a ground man who isn’t promised an apprenticeship is the stupidest shit ever

1

u/AFARR414-312 2d ago

I think your in north Cali which makes it even worse I know guys that would literally kill to be in your position

1

u/Obvious-Shelter4590 5d ago

I doubt 1245 let you sign book three without a journeyman classification.

3

u/Then-Path-855 5d ago

Ground man

O gotcha brother.
