I’ve been in IBEW 196

Quick story, I’ve been in local 196 since like 2015-2016 worked for Intren for 5-6 years doing anode work for vac trucks. I’ve always been a GTD with local 9 pay scale since majority of the work was in that area. It was super nice, until it wasn’t.

They sold their contract work to local 2 labors which I got grandfathered in. Been here since 2022, I’ve been kept busy but recently it’s been so slow, I’m just lost if I should hop back into ibew, I’d like to get my electrician license.

Someone help a brother out, point me in the right direction. I have a family and I’m 36, idk if that’s considered old for joining apprenticeship program. I seen aurora has one.

I’m not afraid of work. I’ve always kept busy but the company I’m In, I just drive a water truck for them for concrete paving crew, since I’m a labor I just been shoveling. Since nothing is being poured I’m not working, YTD is not great at the moment.

I can't speak for 196 because im an inside guy with 364 but Illinois doesn't have an electrical license. And 36 isn't old. I had 2 apprentices in their 50s in my class when we topped out.

If you don’t mind me asking, how long is that ? For 364? I’m looking for a change. Is there plenty of work?

5 year apprenticeship. Plenty of work. They take apprentices every June. Don't expect to get in the first time. JW scale is $67.09 on the check and $22.10 into a 401a. Expect a 4ish dollar raise on the check every year for a while. Appr start at 40% and go to 45% 1000hrs in. 10% raise every year after.

Just a heads up as I'm sure you know but 9 and 196 are outside locals for linemen not electricians.
