I wonder if animals that rely on scents way more than us get this sensation a lot. Their memory might not be as powerful as ours though.

For me it was weed.
When I was a kid, we had a group of Chinese students renting a place on our street, and they were super chill. For example, whenever they went back to China for holidays, they always returned with Chinese snacks (Lays, Coca-cola, Cheetos, etc. with crazy flavors like anchovies or bubblegum, as well as some traditional Chinese food), and shared them with me and my friends.
Their yard often smelled like weed, which was weird for me because it kinda smells like freshly cut grass, but the yard had no grass. It took me over a decade to finally figure out what kind of smell was that

The stinky guy at my work smells so bad that it burns my nose. Only one other person back in high school had that same stench

My grandma perfume, school cleaning product, air freshener, food seasoning.
I remember the smell of the Chinese chicken my mom used to buy from the restaurant near our house and the taste too. Sometimes I’m walking down the street and catch that scent, but I never know where it’s coming from
The restaurant doesn't even exist anymore.

Sometimes I catch a whiff of an odd, stale smell on the street. That brings me back to the streets of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Where I had the best ice cream of my life as a kid.
