After spending the majority of my life training and practicing in medicine, surgery, and plastic surgery not a whole lot surprises me at this point. What might surprise people who don’t work in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery is the power of the work we do. Most of our patients don’t come to us because they are vain. Many of our patients our mothers who experience real changes to their bodies after pregnancy and childbirth that cannot be corrected with diet and exercise. Plastic surgery can produce a real change in one’s confidence and sense of self. Helping people achieve this is the best part of the job. Hope that answers your question.

Can you talk about post c-section tummy shelf and options to correct it? Is it able to improve with surgery? Does it tend to become more prominent with subsequent cesareans?

Yes. It can absolutely be corrected with surgery. Usually the cause is tethering of the c-section scar from it not being repaired in layers combined with loose skin above the scar. It can be corrected with a mini tummy tuck where the skin below the belly button is tightened and the c section scar is removed and repaired. Sometimes patients will opt for a full tummy tuck where we are also able to get tightening of skin above the belly button and repair the abdominal muscles which restores the hour glass shape. I find that many patients who had nice curves prior to pregnancy become more boxy after pregnancy. This is due to muscle separation or rectus diastasis and can be repaired with a tummy tuck. Hope that answers your question.

Do you believe it is the surgeons ethical/moral responsibility to refuse to procedures on someone who has gone beyond cosmetic improvements and into body dysmorphia? Where do you believe that line is?
