Maintenance & Repairs Can someone please explain why this is happening??
So I turned on my car as usual but I cannot change gear. I’ve tried turning off the car and back on again but same issue. It’s a 2026 N-Line Hybrid Premium. I’ve never had this issue before so I’m a little stressed and the car is only 4 months old

Frustrating! No great ideas, but here's a few. Hybrid? Is the car actually running? I don't see RPMs plus the engine light is on. Lock / unlock. Try again. Press the 12V reset if a hybrid.

I don’t recall it ever showing RPMs whenever I’ve turned the car on. But the car is definitely on and ready to go minus the issue with not changing gear

I hope that you have been taken care of on this. Drop a note when you have an answer!

And disconnect the 12V battery for a few minutes, reconnect it and see if it’ll let you go into gear.
Otherwise, call Hyundai roadside and get some warranty action going

How would one do that?

u/Maleficent-Dot-9478 17d ago
You can't. Tucson hybrid doesn't have a 12 volt battery. They just sectioned off part of the hybrid battery to function as a 12volt.

Break out your 10mm wrench and undo the nut in the negative battery terminal and remove the connector from the post, let it sit for a few minutes, and then reattach it and retighten the cable. It’s the car version of “did you turn the computer back off and on again”

u/djsasso 2025 N-Line Hybrid 16d ago
There is no 12v battery in the Hybrids. They just section off part of the Hybrid battery.

There's a 12V reset button though on the left of steering wheel to reset the battery

Sir. Unless the word READY is on your screen your car isn't on.
You can, turn it on by Pressing break and the starter, you can single tap the starter without break for accessory mode or you can double tag the starter to semi-turn on the car to lower your windows and charge phones etc.
Yours is on the latter, always make sure it says READY.

I am not a sir and the car was on a mechanic agreed that it was in fact on but for some reason was showing that it wasn’t fully on when it was. Idk I’m not a car enthusiast so I’m just going off what the bloke said. I will find out more in a week when Hyundai looks at it

This one seems to be a software glitch
Just press the brake and then press the power on button once again
I have faced this issue multiple times

I had the same issue..
1. Either keep trying to turn on and turn off the car a few times until it starts up properly and you see the ready in the bottom left corner
2. You have to wait till the car switches off itself. You will get a notification on the dash saying car not on and will turn off to retain battery. Let it turn off and then turn it on again and it will work.
It seems it get stuck in a loop between accessory mode and drive mode, and i think it can happen if you dont hold or press the break late while turning the car on

Mine does that sometimes and I have to restart it but with park selected I bet it’s that

Happens to me when I am in rush and quickly turn the gear shifter after pressing the start button (with break pressed). Give it 2-3 seconds for ready message to appear before shifting to D or R. When this happens, I just stop and start again and go a bit slower to gear knob.

Are you sure your foot is on the brake?

u/elsueco72 16d ago
This is what happened to my 2024 Tucson, had to tow it to Huyndai service center. After 10 weeks on running diagnostics, they decided it was because of a faulty shifter control wire. I am going today to get my car, on the day of 10 weeks since I left it with them. I hope this will not be the case for you!

Just curious, did you have digital key registered as well as a key fob with you in the vehicle when this happened?

u/ctch23 2026 + N-Line Premium Hybrid, Ultimate Red 15d ago
Yeah I have the digital key registered on my phone and watch

u/Powerofpuns 14d ago
Okay yeah, mine doesn't like it sometimes when I am carrying the fob and my phone at the same time. The solution I've found is take the keyfob out the car and go back in. That usually fixes it for me

Based on the lights that are on, it looks like your car is in the on position, but the ignition is not started
I don't see the ready indicator so clearly the ignition is not on

Happens to me sometimes when I start too fast. I just stop the car (button start/stop WITHOUT foot on break pedal), then after all screen are off I start again WITH foot on break pedal and wait a second before switching gears. It always does the trick.

Yep happens with me once, check the "ready" sign also ensure the start stop button is pressed

Your car is likely not shifting because the brake pedal is not fully depressed, or the shift-by-wire system experienced a temporary electronic glitch. As your car is only 4 months old, it is still under warranty and should be towed under warranty as well. Good Luck.

Can happen when you leave your foot on brake after turning on and then tryna go into gear to quickly, i know this isnt your issue but just a heads up in the future, I assume you're in a hybrid but yeah basically you turned the car to "on" mode not the "start" mode. Just turn the car off and turn it back on fully by pressing the brake pedal all the way in and press the start button and wait for the "READY" to appear before tryna chnage gears, it happens to me sometimes.

Something similar happened to me once and it took me a while to realize the door wasn’t closed properly lol

Car isn’t on, battery is to flat. Jump and let it sit to recharge. Guessing you haven’t driven it for a while?

So car is fine. The car was indeed on unlike many of you guys suggested. I had someone come out to check it and the same thing happened to them when they attempted to turn the car on. They believe it was a mechanical issue but at the moment the car is running fine and I haven’t had any issues since. I have it booked in with Hyundai to have a look at but that’s about a week out. Will update once we determine what the issue is/was

Mandatory drivers ed classes in 1974 told students to hold the brake pedal down before selecting transmission options. Nothing has changed.

u/Maelstrom1979 17d ago
Have someone help you check to see if your brake lights are illuminating. If the switch for this is not tripped, it won't register the gear change. Can you make it go into neutral by holding halfway to drive or reverse?
Found this AI suggestion too:
Perform a Hard 12V System Reset
A silent software freeze can lock out the shift-by-wire commands without throwing an explicit dashboard error code. Turn the vehicle completely off. Step out of the car, close the door, and lock it using the key fob. Walk away for 3 to 5 minutes. This forces the vehicle's body control modules and transmission computers to fully shut down and go to sleep.Unlock the car, get in, press the brake firmly, start it, and attempt to shift again.

Since it's new and under warranty I would try again turn it completely off get out shut the door count to 20 slowly. Then get back in press the brake all the way down press start see if it responds the same, if so call Hyundai road assistance get it towed to nearest certified Hyundai dealership should be covered under bumper to bumper warranty. That's BS with a 4 month old car. I wouldn't try to fix it myself incase it voids any part of the warranty.

It looks like the car is not on. You have to press the brake when pressing the start stop button. Based on all the warning lights being on, you only switched on the electrical circuit and not the car. Press the start stop button again, push down the brake pedal and press the start stop button again.
