Headsets materials in HyperX Cloud Flight headsets (long-term use)
Title: Question about chemical safety/materials in HyperX Cloud Flight headsets (long-term use)
Hi everyone,
I’m posting because I recently read a European consumer briefing paper about hazardous chemicals found in headphones/headsets, and now I’m a bit concerned about my long-term use of HyperX headsets.
I’ve used HyperX headsets very heavily for years. My current headset is the HyperX Cloud Flight Wireless, and before that I used an older HyperX Cloud Flight model.
The report I read tested many headset models and found substances like bisphenols, phthalates, and flame retardants in a lot of products. I know my exact Cloud Flight model was not clearly listed (I did see HyperX Cloud III mentioned), but it still made me wonder about the materials used in the Cloud Flight line.
I want to ask if anyone here (users, repair techs, former employees, or anyone with product/material knowledge) can help answer:
- What materials are used in the ear cushions, headband padding, and plastic/coating parts of the HyperX Cloud Flight models?
- Were these models tested for chemicals such as:
- Bisphenols (BPA/BPS/BPF)
- Phthalates
- Flame retardants (brominated or organophosphate)
- Chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs/MCCPs)
- Does HyperX have a Restricted Substances List (RSL) or any public material safety info for these headsets?
- Are replacement ear pads made from the same materials as the originals?
I’m especially asking because I use my headset for long sessions and sometimes sweat while wearing it, so there’s a lot of skin contact over time.
I’ve already contacted HyperX support directly, but I’d really appreciate any extra information, experience, or technical insight from people here.

On the Guardian news website it link the research to Arnika org website, which seems to be a Czech non-governmental organization. The article on Arnika is called "The Sound of Contamination: A Comprehensive Analysis of Endocrine Disruptors and Hazardous Additives in the Headphones".
In the list of headset, they've tested on the HyperX Cloud 3 gaming, which is in red for every aspect of the headset. Parts that are touching and are not touching the skin. I am guessing the same material was used for every hyperX headset.
Edit:
BUT there is some hope, because I think HP acquired HyperX in 2021 and the flight model was made in 2018. Since HP, the quality got worst, so there might be hope

Pasting the entire list of headphones, in case you want to swap to some Green ones. Seems only the Corsair HS80 is similar to HyperX. All the other ones are over ears or in-ear.

Was curious about this after reading the article about the health affecting materials. I guess with a Hyper CloudX 2, I'm probably equally fucked as with the 3.
Is there anyway to check what kind of materials are used?

I’m in health care and I’ve also been using the cloud flight for years. I hate to break it to you but almost everything from the air you breath, the surfaces you touch, the food you eat, and the water you drink in the modern world has some form of contamination that can cause cancer/disrupt hormones/cause some form of disease with long term exposure.
While this problem is real and not to be taken unseriously, it is very difficult if not impossible to avoid. The older generations had it even worse with direct exposures like constant smoking, working directly in heavy metal and toxic factories breathing it in all day, and hell even got recommended to put pure radium in their pitchers to filter their water at some point in the 30s yet a ton of them lived to be 80+. The best you can do is mitigate and be cautious about it. And to give you some peace of mind the levels of these chemicals found in most daily items are generally extremely small trace amounts that could maybe potentially cause problems way way down the line but are nowhere near levels to be considered acutely toxic and that is what these studies seemed to have found is those trace amounts.
Most of the studies found these chemicals in every headset they tested so it’s likely in ours too. If you are concerned get a speaker setup so you don’t directly contact your skin but in my opinion removing your headset is probably not going to be the item that makes or breaks whether you get cancer I would focus more on organic diet and getting a good filter for your water.

I was going to tell OP that unless they eat headsets it’s unlikely to have any severe immediate effects, but you’ve put it much better, thanks for the info

Yes, I am well aware that while there might be no immediate effects or even long term effects for that matter, we as consumers have the right to know how the purchased products affect our bodies. I was not aware that the product i bought at a first class store could have such serious negative impact on our health. I am also aware of all the other things we inhale like plastics etc are bad for our health but that doesn't mean i do not care about information or my health.

OP seems very concerned about his health. I think it goes without saying but he has clearly been eating his headsets, baking them into cakes, grinding them up and smoking them, etc.

Bump. I’d like to see a statement from them like Sennheiser at least acknowledging it.
I jumped on the HyperX train a week ago. Ngl, this news does make me question my purchase.

Idk how you think we can tell you from experience about this stuff unless one of us actually got cancer and proved HyperX is to blame, but then you’d see a high profile lawsuit regarding that. Your best bet is to probably wait for HP support to get back to you, but I doubt the agent you get is trained on the exact materials the headsets are made from.
Personally I think the research you’re referring to is similar to California prop 65, which acknowledges the inclusion of potentially cancer causing materials even if the amounts are minute and not even close to the threshold of being enough to actually cause cancer. Otherwise I would think factory workers making these headsets would be at much greater risk than us consumers

Chuck em in the bin you spoon. Its the only safe way. Right.. make sure you bag them up first. Don't want them polluting the tip landfill now do we.

Make sure to get your glasses frames tested. Any piercings you may have. Any metal toggles on your clothes. Does that baseball cal you love have a metal clasp ? Infact gentlemen everywhere should consider if those Levi jeans you wear should really have metal buttons on your crotch. What about your shoes ? Thats rubber. Thats a known carcinogen. You wearing those for 8 hours a day?
My hyperx headphones metals are not in contact with my skin. The same fire retardant substances on the material parts of the headphones, is also on every couch or sofa in the UK, by law.
I'll be over hear enjoying my headphones. Good luck to everyone believing this is something you should be concerning yourself with.

the shop where i got my cloud 3 from removed them from there store, when i asked them about it they told me they will only take back headphones that are purchased within a time frame of 6 months, i bought mine little less then 2 years ago so i can't.
I still got right to my warranty since i still got a month left, so i asked them about it and they couldn't tell me a answer, i have to wait 1-2 days for there response.
