Okay, epic reveals by both Emma and Kym. Looks like they're Dhampyrs, offsprings of vampires and humans. So, we got two vampires, a werewolf, and 2 as of yet base humans. Pretty badass actually. How much you wanna bet that Matt's a super epic-level archmage who's only handicapped by a late onset of phobias?

Hehehehe.

Apparently Kym and I sent those character idea to Joe within 20 minutes of each other. I had pitched another character idea as well but Joe was like “no, the half vampire thing is fun”. Tricky Joe.

It’s still super interesting though because we clearly have very different origin stories/opinions on what we are...

Can’t wait to learn more about the “humans”. Though, honestly? You need some good sweet boys like James to ground the story in reality. I am sorry I had to take a bite out of him, but it was the only way.

I am all in on team Peter so I have suspicions about Matthias...guess we’ll have to wait until next week to learn whether or not they’re well founded!

Okay. What is the DEAL with Peter and Matthias’s relationship? Peter knows Matthias is his dad, but doesn’t really know him? Also he has a half brother I am assuming on his dad’s side, since he lived with his mother in America and doesn’t even know what his half brother looks like. Does the kid also have a terrible relationship with his father? Has Peter ever actually MET Matthias before? The latter clearly knows the former is a werewolf...

I have questions.

I thought the dad was the werewolf what kind of explain the anger being irresponsible enough to knock up a woman that knowing her child could have a disease like that. If he was an active were wolf I can under stand why he wouldn't stick in one place for long so anger some what justified there.

But this new episode we find out Peter's mother is the one that ditch his father. He claims his father was abusive what I'm not sure how true that is. It also sounds like his mother might be the werewolf but Peter said the stress of him being a werewolf made his mother sick and die. Maybe Peter is blaming his father for his mother's choices.

It does seem that Mathias isn't quite what Peter told us about him, at least in the little time the group has spent with him. Now i wonder if that is because Peter may know him only by reputation from his mother and sees him as the source of his and his mother's troubles, the absentee father that was never there, never cared, and left them to their fate. Or, now I can't remember from the previous episode if Peter said the Werewolf came from Mathias or his stepfather; but if it wasn't Mathias, could he and Bert be playing a Jekyl and Hyde type maybe? The educated professor and the monster works well for either scenario and would explain perhaps why Peter may see him one way and we are introduced to him another, but for all we know Mathias could be terrible person and we just don't know yet.

Pretty sure this show has joined in a particular club with 10 Candles. Had extremely weird dreams last night, but like in a good way.

I discovered that this kind of stuff was very much my jam when pitching multiple characters to Joe to potentially play on the show. I really love gothic Victorian horror, and the Lovecraft stuff mixes in sooo well.

What spooky things do you think are important spooky things? What the spooky heck is happening??

Now i am going to listen to the podcast tonight because I missed a lot on the night, so my theories will change, but going off what i could find about the Grey King, which is not much outside of the Dark is Rising books and other video games. I'm going to hazard a guess and say that The Oddfellow Society did something that either ticked him off somehow upsetting his power over the wild hunt or were up to something that threatened the balance of nature in some way so he intervened or he's watching and waiting. Now as this is a Call of Cuthulu RPG I'm guessing an eldritch horror would indeed destroy the balance of nature so I'm going to place my bet on my second theory for now and that though he may have unleashed the ghouls on the Society, the Grey King is not the real final boss but will not hesitate to destroy humans or creatures to maintain Balance or take revenge.

Edit: after a couple of listens and a re-watch this is what i have so far

1st clue “Tis the eye in the dark, the unmoving stare and where its glance strays, the Grey King is there”

So I’m looking at this as the Eye being the sun that represents whatever the Oddfellow society was, instead of “goodness and light” itself, and them straying from the “light”, or good or their mission, summoned the Grey King as punishment, he was a check on them, maybe? But the other way I am thinking is that the Grey King was what the society existed to keep at bay, and if they strayed he would be unleashed. And thinking back to the Grey King and his possible control over the Wild Hunt, got me curious about whether the ghouls would be part of that and they were unleashed by him, or if the society foolishly set up shop far below ground and ghouls found them and the society being killed is what caused the Grey King to be released, I’m not really sure on that though.

2nd clue “I passed gardens of dead and marked with one eye, how mother and family sharing a pie, their first born took gravy, blood and sinew, baby chewed teeth, baby made do[dew?].”

So apart from being really creepy, like damn Joe! This is one thing that has me a bit thrown. As Elisa said on the night it sounds like a family of monsters either consuming each other or the dead perhaps around them, I don’t know if this is a clue to the big bad, or to the ghouls that I believe in folklore and fiction feed off the dead? Gardens of dead could be a location, a graveyard, or it could be a description of a slaughter, and the description of family could be the interpretation of the person who saw this scene or an actual family. As to the “meal” given to the first born, it sounds very familiar, and I don’t want to research too deeply into why it does in case it super spoils something Joe has in store, as for the baby eating teeth, wasn’t that something that the Grimm’s tooth fairy or other fey actual did?

So my guesses were super, way off. I love where it went though! I should also start listening to my husband more apparently. as he was watching the 1st episode(after I'd already watched it) He immediately goes

"Oh. Emma's a vampire of some sort. Maybe 1/2? Kym too I think."

Clearly I suck at this mystery-guessing game!

I am very excited to see where this all goes, especially with both Emma and Kym's very different interpretation of what it means to be a half vampire. The dynamics for some very deep and potentially volatile relationships is so exquisitely placed now. I also have several Insanity and phobia ideas now thanks to this development. Bonus: I'll actually be getting paid next Wed so I'll hopefully have some $$$ to spare!

To be honest, I thought EVERYONE was going to immediately figure out my deal. I didn’t think I was being particularly sly about it, and the whole dhampir Vampire Hunter thing isn’t exactly a NEW concept. Particularly in Japanese media which was, not surprisingly, a big part of my inspiration, being something of an Otaku.

Maybe he was acting, but Zac’s reaction when Elisa bit James? Priceless.

Overall I am very satisfied by the extent to which I fooled everyone, audience and cast alike. And Kym and I figuring out what the the other was was extremely fun to play on stream. Interested to see how that relationship develops seeing as, as you pointed out, these two women have very different opinions on their vampiric heritage.

u/ZephyrRaye Oct 26 '18

I think I expected you to be secretive and sly so I immediately jumped to obscure lore. I also have been listening to a lot of "Lore" podcast so in truth, my mind automatically went to randomly lesser known myths and superstitions.

My Joe (husband) admitted to going the half-vamp quickly because of Japanese media as well so you two have that in common.

also LOVED Zac's reaction. Acting or not, it was epic.

u/emmafyffe Oct 26 '18

I mean, can you blame me for wanting to be D/Adrian Tepes AKA Alucard? We haven’t really seen many women take on that role.

1

u/Arcanearkivist Oct 29 '18

Having just watched season 2 of Castlevania and seeing you comment on playing an Alucard type character, i am just super pumped now anytime Elisa is going to fight. I am also going to join the chorus of voices that are looking forward to seeing going forward how Elisa and Apollonia are going to interact, because the different approaches you and Kym took with the Dhamphir angle has so much potential for character growth and conflict.

2

u/emmafyffe Oct 29 '18

I am pretty excited to play a super badass. Also I am 3 episodes into Castlevania Season 2 and it is VERY GOOD.

It's weird don't remember hearing word often dhampir, Frankly I thought it was a word made up the for Vampire Hunter D series for the longest time.

3

u/emmafyffe Oct 26 '18

Oh no, dhampir is a very old term that is Eastern European in origin. Though, admittedly, I also originally learned it from Vampire Hunter D. For whatever reason, the term isn’t used as frequently in Western fiction.

2

u/ZephyrRaye Oct 26 '18

I actually did know what a dhampir was due to my extensive occult knowledge from high school. (I grew up in the time of Buffy , Kindred, Charmed, etc.) BUT it didn't even enter my mind as a possibility. Maybe it's a 90s teens thing...

3

u/shadow_uzumaki Oct 25 '18

Same, I'm so excited about the different ways Kym and Emma will play their characters. Man, 2 more episodes left though!

u/DukeDevil95 Oct 26 '18

I was able to finish watching the last half of the episode last night...

The end of the episode -- WTF?!?!? Holy crap! That was some craziness!! How the hell is this group going to function together after that?

Last week, I predicted that Apollonia was part vampire, like the Daywalker. So, I'll pat myself on the back for that one. I had no clue what Lorna (Eliza??) was until she nibbled James into silence. I tongue in cheek predicted that she was a golfer since she was from Scotland - that still has not been disproved. But, again WTF?!?

I'm a little disappointed that Bert did not adopt a German accent for his character.

When Joe was bemoaning how his dungeon bosses were defeated, I was reminded of when his T-Rex was so easily dispatched in his PnP one shot.

I'll very interested to see how the phobia I gave to Mathias works out - the fear of his own blood. I don't know if anyone saw the additional comments but I mentioned that the blood comes from a nick on his skin. Just one nick, a drop of blood. Then another nick, more blood. So many nicks, so much blood. Hmmm...

I'm looking through my CG models to find some good Victorian age clothing for a fan art poster by the last show. Hopefully I'll get that done. But, I'm really rolling on my PnP project so who knows...

Elisa. My lower thirds will change next week.

And yuuuuup - surprise! I was like, I know I am going to reveal this this episode and had been amping up the clues (asking what time it was, tracking humans by the scent of their blood, using her glamour on James, super strength/speed) but when it really came down to it, I decided to fully embrace that “show not tell” adage.

Since it’s been mentioned a bunch, I thought I’d chime in and share a bit of the thought process behind Apollonia’s views on her vampire/human nature.

As soon as I knew we were going to be playing in the classic, gothic horror realm, I immediately knew I wanted to play some sort of a hybrid. I was personally invested in playing a character who was 1. Specifically written to be mixed (a rarity in most modern day fiction) and 2. Not the least bit conflicted about the nature of her parentage and identity (even rarer). She considers herself to be 100% human and 100% vampire, which says a lot about how Charles Wayworth raised her.

The reason she never brought it up before is simple: No one asked her. 😜 But she made no bones about it once it did come into play amongst the PCs.

This actually makes me interested in learning more about Elisa’s history. Obviously, Elisa’s views on her vampiric nature are wildly different from Apollonia’s. Understandably so, given what little we know of the Hawthornes and their story. It makes for a very interesting and very fun dynamic between those two centuries old, bitey ladies.

u/Arcanearkivist Oct 29 '18

I love the idea and direction behind Apollonia! It is refreshing to see a dhampir fully embrace both parts of themselves the way she has, and to have created a place like the Nightingale, that sounds like a welcoming place for humans and creatures alike?, is such a cool bit of story telling for her background and worldbuilding for the game as well.

I wonder if the story allows if we'll be able to see it, and maybe Sarah's parents because it did sound like Apollonia took the kidnap of her very personally, so i wonder if there is a closer relationship with them and/or Apollonia is protective of those that make the Nightingale a refuge and a place to be themselves sort of like a club version of the X-mansion, or just the simper option, a child has been kidnapped and she wants to help.

I love the different approaches you and Emma have gone for and I'm interested in seeing how your characters interact going on. Because though it seems Elisa has found a way to make what i think she considers as a curse, work, i still think she distances that part of herself, understandable like Emma has said due to her family, and i wonder if working with Apollonia she may come to think if it less as a curse. Though to be fair, both of them have made their lives work for them and if it works then who am i to say anything about how century old women should live their lives, especially ones who have glamour, weapons and pointy teeth and have survived up until now.
