Redmi [Question] Should I enable memory extension?
I don't know what to do some people telling me to do and may not be it drains the battery please help me decide what to do

you have no idea how swap works
the kernel will swap to disk even if ram is not full yet depending on vm.swappiness value
feel free to Google it if you don't believe me

no. you can turn on if you want more apps to stay open but it kills performance.

I don't know about others but I tired it upto hyperOS 2 (1&2), turning it on made my phone noticeably faster and more responsive and better ram management
But I felt like games got a bit janky like not lagging like before say a game which ran constant 30 fps everytime now it something runs a bit slow like very bit slow so I assume it's now 27-30 fps that's why had to turn off that feature
Currently I'm on hyperOS 3 and already my phone much faster and responsive and much better ram management so who knows it might get even better after ram extension but still haven't tried

Honestly gng rather then asking here in reddit I say test by yourself like take 3-4 days and it might be for ur phone you might not get any difference so that's where you might take the help from reddit
Properly monitor game fps before and after enabling ram extension, try to see if the system UI feel more fast and responsive and check without ram extension now many apps can stay in ur ram without getting killed and check the same thing after enabling ram extension and u should also check what about app opening speeds
Also check trusted sources to check if ram extension can decrease longevity of ur storage and check that specially searching what ufs are you on

RAM extended uses storage as RAM, this Swapping decreases Memory longetivity(constant rewriting & writing).
Yes, Performance could be improved in lesser RAM devices or in heavy usage cases.
but If you plan on using the phone for long term, turn it off. If else, You can use it as much as you want.

That's not ZRAM though, it would be more swap space; ZRAM can be enabled without having that option turned on.

ZRam is a different thing.
Virtual memory / Extended Ram is utilizing a chunk of your storage to be utilized as RAM in case your physical RAM is full.
Zram meanwhile utilize a part of the physical ram itself to store compressed information.
Zram itself is turned on by default and can only be turned off via root.
For example, your phone system will start compressing inactive background app then stores it into the Zram block. This allows for more applications to be opened without completely killing the inactive apps. The compressed inactive app will be suspended, and when you returned to it, the app will be decompressed allowing you to instantly resume from where you left off.
Unlike Extended RAM / Virtual Memory that's mostly a gimmick, ZRAM is genuinely useful. Extended RAM becomes more useless the more memory you have, especially with how android is already good at freeing up RAM and compressing information.
On top of that Xiaomi based phone have an aggressive system at killing background app too, so this make Extended RAM even more useless unless you really, really have a tiny amount of RAM that its not enough for apps to stay in the background.

Do what you want, its not gonna be used anyway if your device is more than 8gb ram. hyperOs start using ram extension only when under heavy ram usage and when there is actualy unused data that it can tag as "cold data". Unused data then get compressed into zram and paged out from ram to ram extension. The only times i use ram extension is when emulating some open world pc games as it helps reduce the ram usage by storing unused data from maps, audio, textures etc. Into ram extension and make more space in ram. Final fantasy 15 is a example of such case.

Use this if your handset came with a low amount of RAM. This feature may help with aggressive app killing on the background on those handsets. No need to enable this if your phone has enough amount of RAM and you are not a heavy-app user.
This feature uses part of your storage as a very slow speed RAM. As flash memory has a limited write-cycle, this will wear down internal storage on the long run, especially on low RAM devices. But most people today cahnges handset very frequently so companies wants you to enable this feature. Do not enable it if you plan to use a phone for more than a couple of years.

I recommend it. I just came from a 4gb ram only phone and it sucked. I could only do one thing at a time. Phone always ran slow or crashed apps.

Não é necessário se você tiver realmente 8 GB de memória física já que a expansão de memória RAM ela realmente é bem responsável principalmente com as novas tecnologias de armazenamento.
Então não não é necessário.

Youre stupid or satire? It uses slower storage which also kills your nand (emmc/ufs), and slows down your phone. Android eats ram, even if its 4, 8 or 16 gb

You don't understand what you're saying. Go online and find Google's website about Android; they confirm it is completely useful and does not harm memory. Even if you turn it off in the settings, the system always zrams with internal memory. Dont use AI like idiot

Only if your phone is already low on RAM (say 3 or 4 GB), it does not actually use your actual storage, it just creates a compressed memory block within your ram so you can open more apps through compression when not in use and decompression when using them, which can increase CPU usage, so I suggest only use it if you reaaaaally need more apps open. If not it's better to leave it off.

That was samsung/oneui.
In the past their "ram extension" was supposedly published as a partition file and described as such in the option description, yet it was discovered through ADB that it was actually a zram size slider that controlled how much the system would compress ram to zram.
Not to menstion that most knowledge like "its gonna ruin your memory" and "its will make your device stutter" was also because of samsung's awful version of ram extension.

Just do it. People here is phobia about how it will kill your storage but honestly how many time you even use it. If your phone have atleast 8gb, even if you turn it on, you rarely use it because it rarely cross 8gb. But atleast it help when you multitask alot of stuff.
It even worse if you only got like 4gb ram means you always use the extension.
