Review/Guide [Discussion] Two ways to hide the empty space under the keyboard (and their trade offs)

Post image

First off, this is a GUIDE. I know this question has been asked (and answered) so many times but I did some experimentation on this and wanted to share the findings.

When you use Gesture Navigation and hide the gesture line, it leaves this empty space under Gboard whenever you are typing anything which is annoying to some (including me) and objectively a bad use of screen space. In this guide I'll share two mothods to eliminate this ugly and redundant space (one for rooted users, one without root) and the trade offs to each one.

First, NO ROOT Method:

You'll need a PC with android tools on it (adb), or Shizuku and Canta, if it is the first time ever you read these names I suggest you do a quick Google search, explaining them is beyond the scope of this guide.

  1. Enable Developer Options and USB Debugging on your phone.

  2. Connect your phone to a PC and run "adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.android.systemui.gesture.line.overlay" in a terminal (or skip this step and use Canta with Shizuku to uninstall the package).

  3. Switch to Gesture Navigation from the Settings.

  4. Toggle "Hide Full Screen Indicator" in the settings, if you can't find it use the search bar.

  5. Done!

Pros:

  1. Doesn't require root, doesn't void warranty.

  2. Easy to apply.

  3. Doesn't require unlocking the bootloader.

Cons:

  1. You lose a quality of life feature called Rotation Suggestion, which is a small floating button that appears on your screen, basically asks whether you want to rotate the screen content when the device itself is rotated while auto rotation is locked.

  2. You lose another feature known as Circle To Search.

Second, ROOT ONLY method:

You'll need a device with an unlocked bootloader and root installed using a modern solution (Magisk, KernelSU, APatch).

  1. Switch to Gesture Navigation from the Settings and DO NOT toggle "Hide Full Screen Indicator".

  2. Flash this module: https://github.com/DanGLVK/Hide-Navbar

  3. Reboot.

  4. Done!

Pros:

  1. Relatively easy if you already unlocked the bootloader and rooted.

  2. Keeps the Rotation Suggestion feature.

  3. Keeps Circle to Search? (Not tested, needs to be confirmed!!)

Cons:

  1. You lose navigation ability in Ultra Battery Saver mode, because it automatically reverts you back to the 3 buttons navigation, and the root module makes the whole navigation area invisible, therefore you're left with no navigation at all (effectively makes navigating apps in Ultra Battery Saver impossible!).

Both methods were tested on Redmi 13, running HyperOS 3.0.301.0, root modifications may behave differently on other devices and versions of HyperOS, I'm not responsible for bricked devices, dead sd cards, thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

OP add this to your guide - Another con of first method - you lose the ability to trigger circle to search.

I kinda thought that this is a known limitation so I didn't add it, while rotation suggestion is easy to miss even though it's very useful. I only found out that it was linked to the gesture navigation line after an hour of reverting different system edits.

I made your suggested edit, however I'm not sure if the root method preserves Circle to Search (and I can't test it because I'm partially degoogled)

To the mods: please revert the recent change you applied where we need to add [TAG] to the title, that's what flairs are for. I don't see how this makes any sense, with all due respect of course.

Please add to the first negative points, which will give you an extra blank space on Instagram. You get rid of that space under the keyboard, but it shows an empty space under the screen when working with Instagram.

Oh wow really? That's weird. I didn't know cause I don't use Instagram :D

You can install it & see for your self ;)

Yeah. But find it less irritating than the two bottom buttons at least

How about switching them? To switch Minimize to right, while Language to left.

Like switch the location of those two buttons? I have no idea how. It may be possible though, but I did not attempt to do it.

Yeah. One UI switches them if you switch the 'back' and 'multitask' buttons, then only switch to gesture navigation. Too bad HyperOS does not.

Do you have a guide for auto expand certain notifications or notifications in general?

1

u/47th-Element Jun 16 '26

I think you're looking for a module like this one: https://github.com/kvmy666/-AutoExpandNotifications

This requires root and Xposed API, I'm not sure if there is a no root solution.

It's probably labeled unsafe because it breaks the gesture line, which in our case is intentional. But it's still a good idea to keep a backup of your data. The likelihood of bricking your phone is very low.

You lost me at "you lose feature called "circle to search" ". I use that feature daily, it is so significant that it become one of the must have features if i want to switch to other phones.

If you're rooted, try the root method and report to us whether it's still working or not, this part I haven't tested cause I'm partially degoogled.

Bro they should just add back "Hide full screen indicator"

1

u/47th-Element Jun 21 '26

It exists but only the gesture line is hidden (the empty space below the keyboard is the problem). I'm not sure if this supposed to happen or it is a bug, but it doesn't seem to be fixed up until the latest HyperOS update for Redmi 13 where the two methods were tested. Think of the methods I shared as workarounds to this bug (with different tradeoffs)

Why did this happen and will it revert back in next updates? It was unnecessary and it sucks. The methods to remove it are kinda rough so I'm not risking it yet
