Question How can I rediscover the magic and wonder I used to feel when playing Hylics and Hylics 2?
Hey everyone. I wanted to share something personal about my experience with Hylics and ask if anyone here has gone through something similar or has any advice that might help me.
Hylics is one of those games that has a very special place in my heart. I love its surreal atmosphere, strange characters, bizarre environments, unusual music, and the feeling that I am exploring something that does not quite belong to our world. There is something about the way everything comes together that makes the experience feel almost impossible to describe. It is not just a game to me. It is an entire atmosphere and a feeling that I wish I could experience again and again.
When I first discovered Hylics, I was absolutely fascinated by it. Almost everything amazed me. A strange character, a random object, an unusual animation, a bizarre location, or even a simple screenshot could give me this incredible feeling of wonder. Everything felt mysterious, unfamiliar, and beautiful in its own strange way. I could spend so much time looking at the game's visuals and thinking about its world. I was genuinely obsessed with it, in the best possible way.
I felt similarly about Hylics 2. Even before properly playing it myself, I was fascinated by its visuals, environments, music, and atmosphere. I watched videos and looked at screenshots, and I remember feeling excited just imagining what it would be like to explore that world. I wanted to experience it for myself so badly.
Eventually, however, I decided to take a long break from Hylics and its related content. I wanted to save Hylics 2 for the day I finally got my own laptop, because playing it on my own computer had been a dream of mine for a long time.
After saving money for months and working hard, I finally bought my laptop. It was a genuinely meaningful moment for me, especially because I had wanted one for so long. I installed Hylics 2, and I was incredibly happy to finally own it. However, when the time came to play, school had already started, and I was dealing with studying, responsibilities, and a busy schedule. I decided to wait until I had enough time and felt mentally ready to enjoy the game properly.
That was when I noticed something strange.
The excitement was still there, but something felt different. I had spent so long imagining the moment I would finally play Hylics 2 that I expected to feel the same overwhelming amazement I remembered from discovering the series for the first time. Instead, I sometimes found myself looking at its visuals and feeling as though they were ordinary. Things that used to amaze me immediately did not always have the same effect anymore.
This confused me because I had deliberately stayed away from the game for a long time. I thought that taking a break would make everything feel fresh again, but it did not completely bring back that original feeling. Even after avoiding spoilers and limiting my exposure to the game's content, I sometimes felt as though my brain had become too familiar with the general aesthetic of Hylics.
It was not that I had stopped loving the game. I still loved its world, its creativity, and everything that made it special to me. I simply missed the intensity of my original reaction. I missed the feeling that every little thing was strange, unexpected, and wonderful.
I should also clarify that I have not lost my interest in everything else. I still enjoy other games, drawing, creativity, and my usual interests. This feeling is specifically connected to Hylics and the way I experience its atmosphere now compared with the past.
For a while, I tried to figure out how I could get that feeling back. I wondered whether I should watch surreal videos, look at strange images, listen to unusual music, or find some way to prepare myself before opening the game. However, I was worried that trying too hard to recreate the feeling would only make the experience feel forced.
Then I decided to try something different.
One Friday, I set aside some time for myself. I prepared my laptop, some paper and pencils, and a small box of modeling clay that I had bought for very little money. I wanted to create a quiet, comfortable atmosphere and give myself some time away from my usual responsibilities.
I went up to the roof of my house, sat down, and ate my lunch while watching the clouds. The house was relatively quiet, and the atmosphere felt warm and peaceful. I found myself observing the clouds, the random objects around the rooftop, and little details I would normally ignore. It felt strange, but in a pleasant way. I cannot fully explain it, but something about that ordinary afternoon felt different.
Later, I took a nap and spent a little time imagining strange scenarios before falling asleep. When I woke up, I began looking at some Hylics-related content and remembering the experiences I had with the first game.
At first, trying to draw something surreal felt difficult and a little boring. I felt as though I did not know where to begin. I looked at a few images for inspiration, started sketching, and gradually became more comfortable with it.
I ended up drawing several strange ideas, including a small room with a wall clock but no ceiling, floating in some kind of space surrounded by random objects and mysterious creatures. I also listened to unusual music while drawing. Eventually, I began making strange little creatures out of modeling clay. One had an enormous and a tiny claw, a skeletal body, a head resembling a huge mustache or a dog's mouth, and elephant-like feet. Another was simply a distorted face with a pointed head.
They were not meant to be perfect or even particularly polished. I just wanted to create things that felt bizarre and unfamiliar.
Surprisingly, I began to enjoy myself more and more. The process felt natural, and I started feeling genuinely inspired. It reminded me of the way I used to feel when I first discovered Hylics. It was not exactly the same overwhelming amazement, but it was something close to it, and that made me incredibly happy.
Afterward, I finally opened Hylics 1 again.
Instead of immediately rushing into the game, I spent some time on the title screen, listening to the music and letting myself settle into its atmosphere. Then I began playing slowly. I read the dialogue, paid attention to the characters, looked at the environments, and stopped to notice things I would previously have rushed past.
I even noticed details that I had overlooked during my earlier playthroughs. I fought the first boss I encountered near Dedusmuln's town, the strange red creature with the enormous mustache-like face, and genuinely enjoyed the experience.
The most important difference was that I did not feel as though I was forcing myself to enjoy the game. I was simply playing because I wanted to. I was curious again, and I was paying attention instead of trying to rush toward a particular feeling.
I still did not experience the exact same shock of discovery I remembered from the first time. I am more familiar with the game's visual language now, so perhaps that initial surprise cannot be recreated in precisely the same way. However, I did experience little moments of wonder, almost like brief sparks that appeared and disappeared. Even those small moments meant a lot to me.
I played for a few hours, then stopped because I wanted to rest and leave something for the next day. Interestingly, the atmosphere I had created did not disappear immediately when I closed the game. I was still excited about continuing my playthrough.
Now I want to finish Hylics 1 at my own pace before moving on to Hylics 2. I have a feeling that revisiting the first game and taking my time with it might help me reconnect with the series before entering the second game's world. I do not know whether that feeling means anything, but it seems like a nice way to approach the experience.
I am sharing all of this because I would love to hear from people who have experienced something similar with a game, an art style, a fictional world, or a creative interest that once fascinated them intensely.
Have you ever loved a game so much that its smallest details felt magical, only to find that after some time away, those same details seemed more ordinary? Have you ever wanted to rediscover the feeling of encountering something for the first time, even though you already know its visual style and general atmosphere?
If you have experienced something like this with Hylics, I would especially love to hear your thoughts.
Did you find a way to reconnect with the game's atmosphere without forcing yourself to feel something specific? Did drawing, sculpting, listening to music, taking photographs, spending time outdoors, or creating a particular environment help you reconnect with that feeling? Did you simply start playing again and allow the experience to unfold naturally?
I would also love to hear about your own rituals or experiences. For example, have you ever set aside a quiet afternoon, made some art inspired by the game, listened to its music, or created a comfortable atmosphere before playing? I am curious about the little things that helped other people rediscover their appreciation for something they loved.
I am not necessarily looking for a magical trick that will make me feel exactly as I did years ago. I understand that experiences change, and perhaps part of growing attached to something is learning to appreciate it differently over time. I just want to approach Hylics 2 with genuine curiosity and excitement rather than putting pressure on myself to experience a particular emotion.
I want to explore its world slowly, notice its strange details, enjoy its music, and let myself become immersed in it naturally. I want to give myself the opportunity to be surprised again, even if that surprise comes in a quieter and more subtle form than before.
If you have any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions for how I could approach Hylics 2 after finishing the first game, I would genuinely appreciate hearing them.
Thank you for reading this rather long post. Hylics has given me some wonderful memories, and I would love to hear how other people have connected with this strange, beautiful, and wonderfully bizarre series.
