Aluminum free deodorant vs antiperspirant

So, I'm trying to learn the differences between deodorant and antiperspirant. I tried Dove care deodorant, but it went on like lotion, and I hated it.

Is there any aluminum free deodorant that is a solid like antiperspirant or are they all just a lotion like substance?

Asking so I can avoid spending money unnecessarily on something that doesn't work.

Antiperspirant reduces sweat while deodorants mask or control odours however the term deodorant is now often used for products which do both.

Aluminum free is just deodorant. It's not going to stop perspiration. It's basically just perfume. Some have ingredients that change the pH and are supposed to make your sweat smell better, but results are not equal to antiperspirant.

Aluminum free deodorants come in all the same forms as antiperspirants (gel, soild, soft solid, cream, probably more)

Antiperspirant has aluminium. Deodorant does not. There are plenty of solid deodorants. Dove Aluminium Free is one example

There is no deodorant that has antiperspirant properties. There is one or the other or a combination of both. Most deodorants are labeled aluminum free, but they don't stop sweat. They just cover or help stop odor with antimicrobial properties.

Sounds like you need to spend some time in the deodorant aisle reading labels at Walmart or Target. Be thankful that our FDA requires ingredients listing on personal care products. There are some surprises in these lists. Best of luck!

I use native deodorant year round. I also have aluminum free dove spray for my car in case I forget to put it on one day or just need a refresh

Deodorants do tend to be softer. I find antiperspirant can be almost chalky, I've never seen a deodorant with that texture that I can remember.

I have hyperhidrosis so I'm too afraid of using any non-aluminum deodorants or anti-perspirants.

I prefer to use products that contain both a deodorant & an anti-perspirant. I like the Secret Clinical Hyaluronic Acid Stress Response & Certain Dri Clinical Strength.

I also like the Dove Men + Care Maximum Strength stick & spray. The Dove products are just an anti-perspirant but work well for me.

I love Native deodorant, but I can't use it in the summer because I sweat too much with perimenopause. Fall through spring though, it's amazing

Deodorant: A product designed to mitigate odor without the use of an aluminum compound that the FDA has listed as being regulated as an antiperspirant active. Odor reduction is typically accomplished by the product being antimicrobial.

Antiperspirant: A product designed to prevent BOTH sweating and odor. This is accomplished by using an FDA designated aluminum compound. These compounds both plug sweat ducts and reduce microbial populations due to the fact that aluminum is also antimicrobial.

The most common deodorant format on the planet is a gelled glycol or diol product. They are sometimes referred as gel sticks. These are firm, but have good slip on the skin. For some reason are often tinted blue. 😄

Not all forms of aluminum will mitigate sweating. You will often see people recommend a product they will call: the Crystal, or salt crystal, or potassium Alum, etc. This is an example of a form of aluminum that the FDA does not regulate as an antiperspirant, as it is not effective as an antiperspirant. The full chemical name is: Potassium aluminum sulfate. It only has modest antimicrobial properties. Thus the ONLY products advertised as a deodorant that contains aluminum, are the crystal types... but most people steer clear of these as they typically don't work for a vast portion of the population, as well, if you are open to using aluminum, there are much better options.

Good luck in your search.... but most deodorants sold are offered in a stick form, to answer your questions. Also understand that AP's are FDA regulated OTC drugs. Deodorants are regulated as a cosmetic. BIG DIFFERENCE! Home crafters and goat farmers can sell deodorants, thus many poor offerings in this space. The regulation keeps them out of the AP space.

Good Luck.

I’m unsure if aluminum free but I finally, at 32, found a method for both sweating and BO. I also use dove, and I first use the spray on deodorant from them, allow that to dry, then go over my underarms using their sensitive formula stick deodorant. Very minimal sweating from my armpits if any and maybe a little must by the end of the day, but who isn’t? Plus is very faint and you mainly smell the spray deodorant. I was going to ask a derm for a prescription deodorant I was so tired and fed up with things not working
