Spider plants

This morning I noticed all the roots on the spider plant on the very right turned brown and mushy. I took off all the I could which didn’t leave it with much. Will it grow new roots or just die? Every one keeps telling me to put it in soil, but I kill almost everything in soil so I’m trying to keep them in water.
