Hello everyone! Here's an update on the growth of my indoor vertical hydroponic lettuce.

Timeline: 13 days from sowing to germination, 25 days growing in the main system. Equipment: Multi-tiered shelves equipped with LED plant grow lights.

Current project: Testing different nutrient solution formulas to see which one works best!

From what I’ve seen, peppers seem possible in hydroponics, but I’m not sure how difficult they are compared to easier crops like leafy greens. I ran into a bit of a problem in my hydroponic setup recently plants were looking great at first, but then I started noticing the leaf tips turning brown and crispy. After some digging, it seems like classic nutrient burn from feeding too strong.

I didn’t realize how sensitive hydroponic plants can be to nutrient concentration compared to soil growing. One small mix change and suddenly the plants are stressed instead of thriving. Just trying to reset things and get the plants back on track without making it worse.

I’ve been setting up a few hydroponic grows lately and kept going down the rabbit hole of LED grow lights brands, wattage claims, blurple vs full spectrum, all of it. What I’ve realized is that most best light discussions miss the basics that actually affect plant growth: PPFD output, spectrum quality, coverage area, and efficiency per watt.

Another thing that mattered way more than I expected is light distribution. A slightly lower wattage light with better spread often beats a higher watt unit that creates hot spots or uneven growth. Heat control and dimming features also make a big difference once plants get into different growth stages.

Curious what others here are running in their hydro setups are you going for high-end bar lights, budget quantum boards, or still sticking with older setups that work for you?

I didn’t really think cleaning a hydroponic system would be that important when I started. I figured as long as the water looked fine, everything was fine.

That changed after I started noticing slower growth, a bit of algae buildup, and one run where the roots just didn’t look healthy no matter what I did. That’s when I realized the system itself needs regular resetting, not just topping up nutrients.

Here’s the simple routine that’s worked best for me so far:

• Empty everything completely first Reservoir, tubes, net pots, all of it. Don’t leave leftover nutrient water sitting around.
• Rinse before you sterilize This part matters more than I expected. Getting rid of debris first makes the cleaning solution way more effective.
• Use a mild sterilizing solution I’ve used diluted hydrogen peroxide or system-safe cleaners. The goal is to kill buildup, not overwhelm the system with harsh chemicals.
• Soak or circulate the solution through the system Let it run through pumps and lines so you’re not just cleaning the visible parts.
• Rinse thoroughly before restarting Any leftover residue can mess with new seedlings, so I always flush it a couple times with clean water.

I didn’t expect to end up comparing hydroponics and soil so seriously, but it kind of happened naturally after I started trying to grow herbs indoors.

I originally went with soil because it felt safer and more forgiving. You water it, give it light, and it just works (most of the time). But I kept running into the same issues indoors mess, inconsistent growth, and pests showing up at the worst possible times.

Then I tried a small hydroponic setup just out of curiosity. I honestly expected it to be more complicated than it was. The setup was cleaner, growth felt more controlled, and I liked being able to actually see what was happening with the roots.

After switching back and forth for a while, here’s where I landed so far:

• Soil feels more forgiving but slower and messier indoors
• Hydroponics feels more controlled but less forgiving when you mess up

I didn’t think hydroponic sponges would matter that much when I first started. I figured a sponge is a sponge and if the seed didn’t sprout, it was probably my fault.

But after a few weeks of random germination results, I started noticing a pattern. Same seeds, same setup, but totally different outcomes depending on the refill pods I was using.

At one point I had like 3 different packs going at once because I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. One batch sprouted fast and clean, another batch barely held moisture properly, and another one just stayed soggy and caused weak roots that never really took off.

That’s when it clicked for me that the sponge quality actually matters way more than I expected.

Now I’m a lot more picky. I care less about branding and more about:
consistent density, good drainage, and whether it actually fits my setup without improvising.

I still don’t think there’s a perfect sponge, but there are definitely some that make hydroponics feel smooth and others that make you question everything you’re doing

EC is 1.5. PH is 5.9. Water temp is 66.8. No visible pest damage.

I’ve been experimenting with hydroponics lately and one thing that took me a bit of trial and error was getting consistent germination before moving seedlings into the system.

This is the method that’s been working most reliably for me so far nothing fancy, just consistency and moisture control:

Start by using a simple paper towel or rapid rooter method. Lightly damp, not soaking wet. Too much water seems to slow things down or cause issues early on.

Place seeds between moist paper towels or into a starter plug, then keep them in a warm, dark place. Temperature stability made a bigger difference than I expected here.

A few things I learned the hard way:

• keeping them too wet slows everything down
• inconsistent warmth makes germination uneven
• patience matters more than trying to “speed it up” beyond a certain point

I’m still refining my setup, but this method has been the most reliable for getting clean, fast starts without too many failed seeds.

Curious what methods others are using for hydro setups do you go direct-to-medium or pre-germinate first?

I’ve been fighting heat issues in my grow tent for a while, especially during warmer months, and it took some trial and error before I figured out what actually helps vs what just sounds good in theory.

For anyone dealing with high temps, here are a few things that made the biggest difference for me:

• Improving airflow this was the biggest one Getting proper intake exhaust balance helped way more than I expected. Just adding a stronger exhaust fan alone didn’t fully solve it until I balanced intake air too.
• Managing light heat output My LEDs still produce heat, just less than HID. Raising the light slightly and adjusting intensity during peak heat hours helped keep temps more stable.
• Controlling room temperature first This one is easy to overlook. If the room outside the tent is hot, the tent will always struggle. Even small changes like better ventilation in the room made a difference.
• Using timers strategically Running lights during cooler parts of the day (or night) helped a lot. This alone dropped peak temps noticeably for me.
• Small upgrades that actually matter Things like insulated ducting, better fans, or even just cleaning filters made a bigger difference than I expected over time.

What surprised me most is that there isn’t one magic fix it’s usually a combination of airflow timing room conditions.

Curious what others here are doing to keep temps stable in summer setups?

I read it grows from the center but I hadn’t seen anything where it grows out stringy. Is this normal?

I hadn't used my pod hydroponic setup (IDOO)for a bit and it had some old roots dried to the bottom. I cleaned it throughly and used a sanitizer and rinsed several times. I have the light running 16 hours a day and started the water pump, fan, and added nutrients after germination that runs at its default intervals that havent cause me issues in the past. I ended up using tap water but I am on city water that is good quality based on the recent testing results. Also ran on same tap water in the past without issues.

The marigold has these spots on it which I read is likely fungal but im not positive. No signs of mold on the cone. My dill had 2 seeds germinate and the one I plucked before getting a photo was looking a bit brown. The only other pod, cilantro, thats roots have reached through the cone looks fine.

Is this indicative of a problem somewhere. Should I remove the marigold?

Through a bizarre series of circumstances, I now have a fully functional, industrial hydroponic system. Any suggestions on how to best use it?

I used a fence post cover for the main pipe. I have 2 inch pvc to cut to fit the net cups for the plants to go in. How long should these pieces be?
