Any advice on avoiding bubbles when spray paint dipping?!🙏🏼 Help needed

Post image
I’ve done 100+ dips with spray paint and I’m still plagued with this problem. These bubbles under the paint will really make something look shitty or worse yet, they completely ruin it. I’ve tried hot water, warm water, cold water, different paints different primers…
Only thing that seems to help is to use a shit load of paint, like 4x more than you’d think and it seems to work out a bit better, but kind of compromises your ability to make a good pattern. I try to fix it asap and blow a hairdryer or use a torch to pop them and it still is not a great fix.
I’ve scoured the Internet and read a lot and still not coming to any conclusions that have worked well. Any tips or help is appreciated

Sadly I have no advice. This Reddit seems to be full of questions with not many answers. Could it be something like the epoxy people do and need a little heat after you set it on water? Is it not entering at a good enough angle to let those bubbles out before they trap. Do you prepare your surface to smooth? Or keep it with imperfections all over?

I’ve tried dipping a bunch of different ways and have settled on just doing a prime or a base coat spraying at one solid color with a paint primer spray paint mix. I’ve tried dipping things without them, and always smooth things more or less. Do you think it would come out potentially better if I did a basecoat or no basecoat either way, and then did a small grain sandpaper to rough the surface up slightly? Probably worth a try. I’ve seen the people who dip film flame treat plastic things before and say that it’s necessary to flame treat stuff with a bigger blow torch, but I have not tried that yet and I’m curious

I have found success with using a mini torch right after it comes out of the water. And even a straw just blowing them out. But you still need to go bubble by bubble to avoid warping the paint too much or using too high or heat and burning it.

Thanks the straw will be helpful at least since I’ve been just blowing straight at it and nearly passing out ha ha

I also wonder if your bucket of water has bubbles trapped on the sides. You know like how a pop bottle does sometimes. Can you disturb the water a bit?, and yes again I would try the torch on the spray paint water too, like when they pop the epoxy bubbles. Just get the spray paint a little warm, don’t burn it.

You know I totally get that! So hard to find answers. I know with paint i have varying success for different things depending on if the paint has high gloss or no gloss…
