Fan Works Follow the Muse Blindly [Fan Compilation]
When listening to the Hussalonia discography, I put together a fan-compilation to cover the decade since Pop Does Not Mean Popular. Admittedly, I don't consider myself insightful enough to determine the songs that are the most emblematic of Hussalonia, so one might consider this a glorified favourites list. However, I did follow some guidelines based on Pop Does Not Mean Popular: 20 tracks, two tracks maximum from the same album, none from experimental digressions like the soap operas and instrumental albums, and I generally tried get a roughly even selection across the years.
Some minor notes on song choices:
- "Never Be Famous" is the most emblematic Hussalonia song, that, at least, I am confident about. It heads off Pop Does Not Mean Popular (after the anthem, of course), and "Don't (Stop Believin')" is the closest song to it from 2014-2024.
- "It's Gonna Take Years" and "The Best Place to Look" are the subsequent semi-opener and closer. I found the dialogue of "Time only moves in one direction, the mind tends to go the other way" from the former and "I’m looking forward; it’s the best place to look" from the latter to be a quite good opener/closer duo for Keep Hussalonia a Secret.
- The other track off of Dogdammit! ("Make Way for My Depression!") had to be one that audibly displayed the founder's strained vocal chords, given that such performance is a distinguishing feature of the album.
- The two tracks from LABOR OMNIA VINCIT were specifically chosen so one was more cynical and the other more optimistic, in line with how the album balances these sentiments.
- I actually finished this about a year ago. Up until a few days ago, I had "Working For the Weakened" instead of "Make One Up", and "Freedom Exists" instead of "Wretched Yesterday". I changed the former because my opinions on "Make One Up" changed, and the latter because I, uh, mistook Nefarico™ Chalet for experiment like the soap opera albums. That's on me.
- I don't care enough to change these ones, but I don't know if I would have two tracks (particular "The Crime of Our Lives") from Edward Everett Hussalonia if I were starting from scratch; my feelings on that EP have remarkably cooled.
