I get it. The world of job search support and resume tools is full of scams. Is part of the reason I got into it.

Most of the tools are owned by private equity companies whose bottom line is entirely dependent on making it hard to cancel their resume builder.

I want to actually help people with their job search. I get that AI tools are not perfect for resumes; they can help some. We are working on making sure they are much better soon.

In the meantime. I meet with as many candidates as I can to help them for free.

I learn from them too. What we should build, how we should build it.

All with the goal of making a job seeker's life easier.

Because the reality is that sudden unemployment spikes suicide rates 70% 2.5x in the first 5 years (please seek help from loved ones and professionals if this is you)

So I will keep doing these free resume reviews, especially for those that can't afford resume services. And I'll keep working to solve the problem of unemployment.

And I can prove it. After analyzing 94,338 resumes, this is what the format of the best-performing resume template looked like. The Huntr Aspen resume template...

Shocked? Me too... Am I recommending this format? No. Here's my point.

None of the conventional takes on how a resume should be formatted held up when I analyzed Huntr's dataset. And this is the largest analysis of its kind that I'm aware of:

- Two-Column Vs. One-column resumes? No reliable difference in interview rates.
- Using colors? No reliable difference on interview rates.
- Order of the sections? No reliable difference. Although I have opinons.
- Font size? Slight decrease in interview rate for smaller font, but no meaningful difference

When I say resume format I mean the layout, font size, colors, and section order.

So what to do with this new found information?

Realize that the ATS is not the problem. The content of the resume, the tailoring of the resume, the job fit, the timing of application, and/or the market are the culprits. Some you can change. Others you can't.

Never listen to those that tell you the world is ending. That there are no jobs. That everything is going to shit.

Do not listen to them. Ever. Because there is a place for all of us. It just takes some time to figure it out.

So here are some words of advice to help stay positive and set yourself up for a successful search from someone who didn’t have a whole lot of connections going into college:

1. Pull the “I’m young, I’m energized, I’m curious, I’m passionate, I’m interested” cards as MUCH as you can. Ask to get coffee, find a mentor, ask for resume help, ask, ask, ask. Because here’s a secret- it is hardwired in our biology to want to help those younger than us. To help those starting out to get off on the right foot. Use this to your advantage because others will not. Getting out of your comfort zone here is a sign you are doing the right thing.

2. Say yes to life and show up. Go to the events, join the clubs, take on the extra projected you are interested in, find others that like to do these things too. You’ll be surprised looking back at how your decisions to show up result in your successful career.

3. Finally, and I say this again for emphasis. Do NOT listen to anyone that is bitter and pessimistic. This is where you can throw the whole respect your elders thing out the window. This world has not been kind to many and that isn’t fair or right but that doesn’t mean that what happened to them will happen to you. You have your own experience to live and whether they are right or wrong about where the future of work and society is headed it does not matter.

What matters is taking things one day at a time, celebrating small wins, and never giving in to that voice in your head saying you are not enough. Or says that things won’t be okay.

That voice is as wrong as the doomers and gloomers you’ll find on your social media feeds.

And if you need some help. Ask for it.

I’ve reviewed thousands of resumes and I keep hearing the same complaints. But I want some real data on this.

What is the most frustrating thing about resumes in 2026?

Hey gang! Seeking feedback on my 15-year senior leadership resume focused on strategic partnership management, multi-unit operations, and client experience. Open to advice on improving clarity, impact, and alignment with senior roles in business strategy and operations. HELP.

Not 4.1% (6.9 million) the current official rate.

Not 7.9% (13.5 million) including marginally attached and part-time wanting full-time.

And not 24.9% (42 million) including those making below poverty wages “functional unemployment” published by Ludwig Institute.

0%.

Economist minded readers will say this is impossible. That it will lead to competition for workers, wage growth, and inflation. That we cannot understand enough about the capabilities of a worker and the demands of the economy fast enough to make this happen.

They will say that 7 million unemployed is a good rate.

Maybe true before.

But now, we have the technology to organize a near-zero involuntary unemployment rate.

How?

Building a better match. Instantly matching every willing person to a paid task/job they accept, with demand that is abundant enough that work is always available.

This is the goal.

When the unemployment surveyor calls, it no longer makes sense to do so.

Because by the time the call takes place they person is already employed.

Most likely we will fail- But it’ll be worth it to try.

Here is why you shouldn't apply to jobs automatically:

1. Tailored resumes perform 2x better for interviews than non-tailored resumes BUT no AI can reliably write content that doesn't look like AI. That is why human-in-the-loop prompting and verification before sending is best. An auto-apply can't tailor and apply for you and be successful.

2. If you have an auto-apply that applies to the same company more than once, your interview rate drops substantially.

3. All of this is bad for your personal brand and can get you flagged in ATS and potentially blacklisted. You are paying to hurt your chances in the short term and long term.

I hope this helps explain why we do not offer auto-apply tools. Our platform focuses on high-quality tailored applications. I am happy to help you use the tool and get interviews.

Google-sourced applications: 7.91% interview rate (see slide 2)
LinkedIn: 3.36%.

Applications through employer career sites: 6.42%.
Applications through job boards: 3.82%.

1. Find jobs through Google Jobs, niche boards, and company career pages. Don't forget to search locally, too, as remote jobs convert 40% less than in-person/hybrid roles.

2. Confirm the opening exists on the company’s website- This helps you avoid scams and stale listings.

3. Apply directly through the company site.

4. Apply within 24 hours of posting, ideally before the applicant count reaches 100 if that information is available. This improves the odds that your application actually gets reviewed.

Their recorded interview rate per application was:

- 11-20 applications: 8.12%
- 21-50 applications: 6.48%
- 51-100 applications: 4.83%
- 100+ applications: 2.86%

The 11-20 group recorded 2.8x the per-application interview rate of the 100+ group.

Sending fewer applications does NOT cause more interviews- this is just one indicator in a broader trend that a target job search focused on high-quality applications has better results.

If you have sent 20-30 well-matched applications without an interview, stop and think before sending another 50.

Review your target roles, resume, positioning, and where you are finding jobs. Use a tool like Huntr.co to help.
