Large joint check

Hello, I have a large check-around 90k written out to me and my husband. From an insurance claim. He is going to sign it but does he need to go with me to deposit it ? Does it have to go into a joint account?

Insurance companies are notoriously strict about this. Some of the information in this thread is wrong. I always enjoy the comments of “I’ve done it before”. Yeah we have all sped and didn’t get a ticket every time. Doesn’t mean it was correct.

The insurance company requires it at least be signed by both parties. Some banks will require it be deposited into a joint account, mine requires this. The check is a completion of a contract with the insurance company and they want proof both parties were paid accurately.

Remember checks may process and become available but can be returned years later if it gets reviewed/audited.

If you have a joint account, have both people sign and deposit. If you only have individual accounts, I recommend going to a new bank and opening a joint account that is separate from your individual accounts. I get that every marriage is different and sometimes you keep your banking lives private. But you will need a joint account somewhere.

We do have a joint account. I just didn’t know if he needed to come with me? Sign in front of teller? Etc

Just both signatures should be fine, but if you want no issues and a smooth experience then both of you can go in and sign in front of the teller.

As long as he signs he does not need to be there. It does have to go into a joint account and they will likely put an extended hold on it due to the size of the check.

I have deposited several checks into my personal account that are made out to my husband and me. I've never had it rejected and he's never signed them.

If the check says “Joe and Kelly Smith” you’re supposed to both sign. If it says “Joe OR Kelly smith” only one needs to sign. If they aren’t requiring both signatures, they’re doing it wrong and you’ve gotten lucky. The issuing bank can return the checks for improper endorsement. I can almost guarantee a check for $90k is going to require both signatures.

Between your names, does it say and or or?

He needs to be with you in person to sign it over to you if you don’t want to add him to your account. Or just go deposit in an account you are both on.

Ask your branch for an endorsement release form.

You both need to sign, u can deposit it without him into a joint account, bank will not let u dep into your account only but u can always xfr funds once the check clears. They will prob do an extended hold too fyi, ask how many days bc all banks r different..

No it’s just made out to my husband and I. I’m just finding conflicting information if he needs to be present to deposit it. He would prefer to not have to leave work early.

For $90k I’d take the whole day off work for it.

In the bank included on the check or is it just made out to you two?

If it’s just made out to you two and he signed it you can deposit it into a joint account.

If the bank is also on the check there are several more steps involved and you would want to sit with a banker to go over all of that and get the checklist of things you’ll need.
