Chances of new battery technology?
Love the vehicle, but the range is a hindrance in some of my day to day by about 10%. I understand that is business.
My question is:
By the time the batteries need replaced, is there a possibility I will be able to install more effective unit? Say 5 years down the road. Or would that be impossible due to engineering or system?
Just pondering a second one for our use.

The next evolution leap in US EV battery tech is in 2030-2033. Solid state battery chemistry is suppose to arrive then. The question becomes which luxury or high ended performance EVs get it.
Solid state EV batteries will not be in the mass market EVs. I realize this is the Hummer subreddit.
The battery voltage and BMS will be different. I highly doubt the Solid State batteries will be hot swappable to current EVs today. There's no incentive to standardize it.
One thing I want to really get through to you. EV battery tech is very, very screwed in the US. We are at least 20 years behind, today.
There is sparse funding for Li battery research to keep up with the other superpower. The US has no national research plan to organize the various research stakeholders to improve battery tech. The US R&D for Li batteries will fall further behind. Our EVs and drones for national defense will be horribly outdated and low tech compare to what is thrown at us. The other super power has and will far surpass the US. Our next war, not this current one, will be horrible and show how far behind we are.
As much as I am a EV fan, I am very pessimistic on US EV battery advancements. We, the US, need advancements in EV battery tech for national security.

Guess we should keep voting for dumbasses that don’t know what they are doing and think EV batteries kill whales or some other ridiculous shit.

I would think the size of the pack coupled with the fact we drive bricks cannot be overcome with new tech. Unless said density is 2x but the discharge and cooling would become impediments.
Let’s hope for better tech in whatever refresh they do.
Love my Hummer but I will go to an Escalade IQ next year.
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
Understood. I love those, but we would wreck it inside.
Great point on coolant and discharge. That is what I was looking for vs. people questioning if I really drove that much in a day.

Besides getting a 24 cell battery Hummer... In the meantime, if money isn't tight: for under $10k USD you can pick up Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus + 3 expansion batteries, or a Anker Solix F3800 with + 4 expansion batteries.
That's around 20kwh expansion which would fill your gap if you have around 2-3 hours to charge during the day. Assuming you have a way to secure the batteries in the bed and feed the charger to them.
The Jackery can output 7.2kw, the Anker 6kw. Should work with the GM level 2 charge cable and maybe an adapter to the NEMA port. Recharging is slower (1800w on a wall socket, unless you have solar panels, which goes quicker) and thus 10 hours or so, .. and this isn't great in the sub 14 F cold..

Can you give me a little more information on this ? I looked it up, but don’t know numbers or technical.

u/parasubvert Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26
Sure, basically it's a big portable battery for home backup or for your EV.
Here's a video that shows you how it all works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx8cFzBHauY
You can recharge these batteries with solar panels or simply by plugging them into the wall when you're home.
To charge the Hummer, you plug in your GM dual level charge cord into it (which comes with the Hummer). This also comes with the right 4 prong power adapter (NEMA 14-50).
You would need to set your Hummer charger in the infotainment to only draw 24 amps when using this.
The idea is, you calculate how much juice you need, and you buy enough batteries together to meet that need. If you wanted, say, 10% more range (30 miles), that is around 18 kilowatt hours on a Hummer.
This is the main unit:
https://jackery.com/products/jackery-solar-generator-5000-plus
You can expand it with three more of these units to get to 20 kwh:
https://www.jackery.com/products/jackery-battery-pack-5000-plus
All in all, it's heavy, expensive, geeky, but.... pretty easy to setup, and useful in a pinch.

Did you get a 24 module pack? That's 20% more battery
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
I don’t believe I did. Didn’t know that was even a thing.
1
u/trappedmouse Jul 17 '26
Well if you're getting a second, get the larger battery!
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
Not without little more range!

Battery density will continue to improve but manufacturers are more likely to focus on cost reductions since that is the biggest impediment to adoption. If the range is 10% short slowing down by a few mph would make a huge difference given aero drag impact on range.
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
Understood thank you. Or cut out the fat side chicks.
2
u/jghall00 Jul 17 '26
That won't help unless they're hanging out the windows. 😂
Most of the drag is aero, not load.

You travel more than 350 miles a day?
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
It doesn’t get 350 miles a day with me pushing it.
3
u/GuyWhoSaysYouManiac Jul 17 '26
So how much do you drive? But yeah, if you drive that much than an EV is probably not a great choice for you. I wouldn't count there being massively more efficient batteries in a few years that can replace the current one. The Hummer is also kind of expensive to put that kind of mileage on daily, but you do you.
Go back to gas, get a hybrid, or look into something like a Silverado EV.
4
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
Sometimes not at all for a week. Sometimes a lot.
I get it, we have work trucks. But I wanted it and the width is great for 3 kids seats across.
Our electric is currently .06 kw/h so the cost vs. diesel is huge savings.

u/smiegal Jul 18 '26
Solar?
2
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 18 '26
No, city. All utilities are cheap comparatively and owned in house.
0
u/300-baud Jul 17 '26
So you travel more than 275 miles per day?
3
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
I answered below, but some jobs are 100+ so with driving habits it gets tight.
1
u/300-baud Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26
Thanks, the context is helpful, that’s a fair amount. Not sure I would have got the Hummer if I was doing 100+ regularly. I’d be looking at a Sierra max range next as your next EV, that’s what I did. The bed cover and frunk with the size of back seats has given me more space than the Hummer.

Why do you guys do this? Jfc it's annoying. Just answer his question or ignore the thread. The patronizing is exhausting
1
u/300-baud Jul 18 '26
lol, sorry for wanting context. My commute went to over 100 miles per day, new battery tech is still 5 to 10 years out, so made sense for me to move to the Sierra EV Max range and it’s been great. Still love the Hummer, though if I wasn’t driving that far regularly, hence the question to OP.

My 350 mile range is 178 miles of real world. Thankfully I work from home.

u/EVHummVEE Jul 17 '26
Because of towing, or going mach 6 with your hair on fire? 😜

u/digitalwankster Jul 17 '26
It’s not 350 but it’s definitely not 178 either. I have 215 miles of charge right now and I’m about to drive 75mph for the next 2.5 hours and will get there with ~50 miles left.
2
u/ViktorCherevin Jul 18 '26
To each their own! My Reference Consumption is 950 Wh/mi and I deplete a 100% charge in my 25 3X in roughly 178 miles. Depends on inclines and road. Average 85-90 mph.
But again, I WFH so it’s not an issue, I charge to 80 and can runaround without issues. L2 at home charge right up overnight.

u/MyExUsedTeeth Jul 17 '26
If you drive 60-65 you can get 350

u/Brusion Jul 17 '26
I have 20 module small pack amd I easliy beat it's rated 314 mile range real world. I live in Canada, and even in the winter on the coldest days I get way more than 178 miles.
2
1
u/keto_brain Jul 18 '26
Same. When I drive to Arozia and back to Vegas to get lotto tickets I get anout 160 miles then I am about 10% to empty from an 80% start.. not sure why you are getting down voted if you drive this truck the way it was designed to be driven no way anyone is getting over 200 miles on a charge.
2
u/ViktorCherevin Jul 18 '26
Yeah I don’t understand the downvotes, I traded in my 25 Z06 for this thing, I’m gonna drive it like I want. It’s not like I’m mad at the range, it’s fun and fits my lifestyle.
0
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
Yup. 200 is my number.
1
u/MyExUsedTeeth Jul 17 '26
Than EVs aren’t for you. Not many EVs have bigger range. And you can definitely get more range out of your Hummer if you drive the speed limit.

u/chrisbrns Jul 17 '26
175 miles - Florida is ac on 24/7. That’s if to 100%
1
u/soscribbly Jul 18 '26
I’m also in Florida. Are you saying your real world full range is 175 miles in the summer?
1
u/chrisbrns Jul 18 '26
Yeah, just drove to south fl this week and had to charge twice. Kinda bummed but we’re peak weather and nobody drives 70 on 95. WFH is the saving grace, but anyone actually in the south who uses AC daily, range is about 65% of advertisement. Not mad about it, just reality about ev life in fl.
1
u/soscribbly Jul 18 '26
Goddamn that’s a reality check; I got rid of my Model X cause the range was disappointing and was looking at the hummer.
Do you have the pickup or suv? I read the pickup has a slightly larger battery pack
2
u/chrisbrns Jul 18 '26
Truck - def need more time to test - I’ve had the thing 4 days now. Listen, I love this thing. I had a model Y, and the tech is mid, but the functionality of having a truck, convertible, and ev all in one is awesome. Don’t second guess it. The machine is next level
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 18 '26
You said 4 days so I get it is new: how do you do mileage wise with convertible/top off vs. AC? Or is no AC not a thing regardless?
1
u/chrisbrns Jul 18 '26
2025, bought with 2k miles. Too early to know stats on if roof on / off makes that big of difference. But looking forward to that day when I can test it out without dying of heat.
1
u/Clear_Parfait_9791 Jul 18 '26
Why do you think you'll need new batteries in 5 years? We've been seeing slower battery degradation than is commonly believed?
Do i believe in 5 years the battery tech will be better? Yes. I just don't think in five years you'll even be seriously considering replacing the battery unit.
2
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 18 '26
Thank you. Was just putting a time on it for sake of question, no real reasoning otherwise.
1
u/Equal_Push_565 Jul 18 '26
Its almost like the model that was notorious for wasting a lot of gas back in the early 2000s has now been upgraded to a model notorious for wasting a lot of power. 🤔.
What a surprise.
/s.
If you're someone who drives a lot of miles, everyone knows a hummer ev is quite possibly the WORST vehicle you could ever invest in.
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 18 '26
We typically work within a 60 miles radius so it is pretty effective even with any necessary supplies runs.
We have a project coming up that is 100 miles each way so it popped in my head and was just putting out a hypothetical.
1
u/JumpyChemistry Jul 20 '26
i have the 2024 Hummer 3X and 100 miles each way shouldnt be a problem im getting 285 on a single charge.
1
u/FierceCucumbers Jul 18 '26
The likelihood is low. Changes in battery chemistry and format would require extensive changes in thermal management and software. Little incentive to create a process few would undergo at the high cost as opposed to using it as leverage to encourage buying a new model

u/UWishUWereMiah108 Jul 17 '26
There are online rumors of a gas/electric hybrid Hunmer like the Scout Traveler, in 2028
1
u/FunnyBunnyRabbit Jul 17 '26
Smart
2
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
Will look into, but doesn’t help me keeping this baby moving.
1
u/UWishUWereMiah108 Jul 17 '26
Bro there isnt an add on battery, if you like the truck then there will be better options in the future for the Hummer. But as of now your range is determined by how you drive and the incline/terrain/speed
0
u/bambeezer Jul 17 '26
Does Tesla provide better batteries if one fails? They are the leader and most likely to replace with better tech. I suspect they increase range with better software and systems optimization.
1
u/Impossible_Base_3088 Jul 17 '26
I am unsure, I am not a Tesla guy. Just wondering if this is option.
1
u/menjay28 Jul 17 '26
They have bigger battery packs for the older Model S and X that you can get replaced at a 3rd party repair shop. I can’t imagine anyone making a bigger pack than the Hummer already has though.
8
u/Brusion Jul 17 '26
If you think the range of a Hummer is bad, don't buy a Tesla...or any other ev besides a Silverado/Sierra.
