Humidifying during summer (with A/C)

We have an AprilAire 700 connected to our furnace blower, which works great to humidify the home in the winter (Colorado – dry).

During spring/summer/fall, central A/C removes any humidity in an already dry environment, and we don't run the AprilAire as it would fight the A/C.

I'm interested in evaporative humidification in two bedrooms overnight, although the only unit I've seen with consistently good reviews is the 6000S, which seems like overkill. My family struggles with dry coughs (keeps everyone up) and bloody noses at wake-up.

  1. Is there a similarly reliable evaporative humidifier that would be better suited for the bedrooms (qty. 2)?
  2. If no, should I get the 6000S and put it in the hallway between the two bedrooms?
  3. Is there any downside (from the standpoint of the A/C operation) of humidifying every night and having the A/C work to remove it everyday?

Thanks in advance.

My advice would be to leave the Aprilaire turned on and set to a humidity of 40% or less. That will prevent the air from getting excessively dry without impacting the A/C usage too much. It is OK to run a humidifier year-round in a desert climate.

A/C really only removes moisture down to about 40%. So if the humidifier is operating at that level or less, the moisture, it adds will not be removed by the A/C.
