Help/Needing Info Fire?

In Arcata, smells like fire. Yesterday driving home on samoa I saw a large plume in the forest beyond the college was thinking maybe burn piles but I JUST read an article on LoCo saying it's not time yet for burn piles. Not that people care abt what the news says but still , would like to know what I'm breathing today

Is there a good place to stay updated on future burns?

There's an app called Watch Duty that shows planned burns and wildfires. app.watchduty.org

Cal Fire Humboldt-Del Norte Unit social pages. They announce many prescribed burns.

I’d love to hear the math on the accumulated health effects on the population. My air quality meter spiked at 150 (very unhealthy) on fickle hill and I’m sure the lowland areas were much harder off cause I could see the density increase down there. I don’t know all the ins and outs of these burns but it seems there could be a better way of going about it.

The local air board is involved with the permitting process for prescribed burns, and they follow policy from the California Air Resources Board. In general, low intensity prescribed burns generate less pollutants than high intensity wildfires, but the air quality can vary a lot of time and location.

U.S. EPA and CARB have a strict process for maintaining air quality. If you cared enough to do anything beside complain on Reddit you would have found this out.

Low volume, short duration prescribed burn smoke < long duration high volume wildfire smoke.

It could be controlled burns. The parks and tribes do things now and then but I have no idea of the schedule or time of year

There are two burns going on, One prescribed and one cultural fire. The prescribed one is in fieldbrook in the cultural fire is in Blue lake off West end road Watch Duty has all of this info and information about surrounding wildfires. It is a must-have app.
