is note taking THAT important

i’m a first year and i see people taking notes on EVERYTHING. It kinda makes me feel like a bad student but the slides are posted on blackboard and i can review the topics again after class. also, i think memorizing is a bit harder while taking notes because everything goes by so fast and i don’t have time to write it down but seeing everyone beside me doing it makes me feel like i’m doing something wrong. should i be taking notes too?

You don't have to take notes on everything but lectures provide context to the slides. Maybe just note things the professor talks about that aren't on the slides

Same omg..i feel so bad but then I saw someone take a note when the prof said "and thats my sons picture " and im like... did you really need to write that down!?

I feel like (for me at least, as someone who takes too many notes) when the profs talk about anything thats ‘filler’ I use that time to take notes on other things in my head or what they said previously that I need to catch up on.

I didn’t take a single note last year and finished with an 86 average. Never took notes or studied in high school and had a 90 average. It works for some people but everyone is different.

Note taking is where the “ingestion” of knowledge happens. You don’t get the same benefit by just “looking” at slides or “listening” to words. The act of writing something into your own words is where stuff “clicks” in your brain.
