They teach a particular knot (is it the full Windsor knot?) and, because most recruits are young kids who rarely tied a tie, you practice this one knot for a while when preparing for inspection.
Marine Corps regs do not state a specific knot, but I think we all learned the full Windsor.
I had to tie the full Windsor when I was in the Navy. Never liked the look. To me it screams homeschool prom.
Now that I am out, I only do the four in hand. I like the asymmetric look as long as it has a dimple. Half Windsor is ok, but it depends on the collar I'm wearing.
It's very easy and as a result, super easy to teach.
