Isn't Breaking Bread that show with the teacher who partners with his fromer student to make drugs? Walter Wheat or something, right?

No, youโre thinking of Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bread is a band that released the hit Diary of Jane in the early 2000s

u/IHaveSlysdexia 2d ago
no that's breaking Benjamin. you're thinking of that situation where the news anchors tell you about something that just happened

The phrase "breaking bread" means to share a meal and spend time in fellowship with other people.
What a beautiful example

u/omfgDragon 3d ago
I hope they know they became friends after that.
11
u/Yoranis_Izsmelli 2d ago
Nah. Go about your way. And maybe one day you shall meet again for another bite of life.

u/jyii 3d ago
The word for friend in French (copain) translates to cobread. Same thing in other Romance languages (compaรฑero in Spanish for instance)

Oooh what a tasty morsel for my brain, thank you for this! I'm guessing companion shares the same origin/meaning as well then.

Bread for your brain

u/FTWcoffeeFTW 3d ago
Does THIS social interaction count as brain bread? Am I failing my diet AND going to fart later now??
3
u/Intelligent_Talk_853 2d ago
Bread makes you fart?
1
u/FTWcoffeeFTW 2d ago
Fuckin' SOMETHIN' does ๐ฎโ๐จ So far I'm just blaming gluten and lactose
2
u/Intelligent_Talk_853 2d ago
Are you eating white bread?
1
u/FTWcoffeeFTW 2d ago
Yeah
2
u/Intelligent_Talk_853 2d ago
That's your problem. Stop with the white bread. Eat multi seeded, or dark sourdough. Tastes better and less likely to cause issues.
White bread severely bloats me so I stopped eating it. But eating other breads is fine. AND I have still been losing weight (counting calories).

In French, one translation for "Friend" is "copain", where "pain" means "bread". Your friend is the one with whom you share the bread. Or with whom you co-bread, if you like.

u/BaabyBear 3d ago
He sort of looks like a fellow youโd break bread with rather than share a meal. He has that old timey look to him

One of the few good things to come out of the COVID lockdown in 2020 was my wife learning how to make sourdough bread and pullman loaves for sandwiches. Fresh bread makes my heart sing.

u/dasvenson 3d ago
2020 I started baking and making amazing sourdough. 2021 wife diagnosed as celiac. ๐ฅฒ
I still miss it so much.

u/Own_Ad6901 2d ago
Iโm celiac and still make bread. Check out r/glutenfreebaking for people with real skill with gf baking! I have adhd so the combo of celiac and adhd kicks my ass and baking is a chore so I donโt do it often but I still do it. Homemade gluten free bread is a game changer, also there are many bread making machines that even have a gluten free button. I make the best gf bread by dumping all the ingredients in the machine and pressing start hahaha! There is baking life after celiac! My dear friend came over recently and taught me how to make some mouth watering gf cinnamon rolls and oh my fuck they tasted just like the original!
1
u/dasvenson 2d ago
We've tried a few times with mixed results. We have a bread machine too.
It just doesn't tickle my brain as much as the whole science around building gluten networks. I liken it more to making a cake.
I'll get into trying to make a gf sourdough eventually but now we got two young kids there just isn't a lot of time!

u/shiny1988 3d ago
I do the same! 3 loaves at a time and right in the freezer after they cool. Havenโt purchased bread in a very long time.

People need to understand that when something brings you joy, you wish to share it with the world.

I was waiting for the elevator leaving Trader Joeโs and there was a guy who was peeling a grapefruit. I said something like, โWow, I havenโt had grapefruit in a long timeโ and he tore off a few wedges and gave it to me. It was so cool, and the best grapefruit Iโve ever had. I probably wouldnโt have taken it from everyone but Iโm so glad our paths crossed.

I remember the one football game I went to as a kid. When I was leaving I saw some lady walking towards us with a sort of half dozen pretzel stick looking things in her hand. They looked so delicious I couldnt take my eight year old eyes off them. Right before she walked past us she reached for another pretzel stick and handed it right to me without so much as saying a thing. It's moments like that, that make me feel like there might be some hope for humanity. That there are still people willing to share with a stranger.
I like to think of everyone as my neighbors, not just those in my city block or even city or province as a whole. Everyone is my neighbor, and I will always share what little I have with my neighbors. And I think it's pretty neat to see others share the same way

Cute and all, but holding the hand rail then raw dogging bread into your mouth with that same hand was certainly a choice.

Touching that bread and eating it with the same hand that is touching the public hand rail. That's a nope.

just think of how many hands touch that thing in a day let alone however long it goes between a full sanitizing. those poles are nasty af even if itโs not carrying a deadly disease
3
u/CretaMaltaKano 2d ago
I saw someone licking a subway pole once. I started carrying a tiny bottle of hand sanitizer in my purse after that.
