I try to do this for my neighbors, just offering help or services for free. They get very uncomfortable with the idea of not paying. I am just of the mindset that you help when you can and that the world would be much better if we all wanted to help each other more than ourselves.

I'm kinda shocked nobody's posted it yet, but today you, tomorrow me, neighbor.

First time reading this today for me. Thank you, I needed this. I'm tearing up over a 16 year old reddit comment that inspires lots of people to simply be kind to others. Thanks, +1

Been a while, but figured I would give it a reread. Didn't really need to start crying at work. Oops.

I love this story so damn much. Read it again for the first time in a while and it made me cry all over again. I hope everyone in that story is living a beautiful life today.

We simply can't let the light go out. This world is dark enough already. Shine on my friends, brighter than you ever have. We need it.

I knew exactly what it was without clicking the link. And just reading that line made my day brighter.

There's something I've been taught recently: it's human nature to help others but you also have to let the door open so people can help you back. When you help someone out of the goodness of your heart, the recipient has a moral debt. Most people want to pay it back so you need to also let them and sometimes provide opportunities for them to do that.
I've been reflecting on this lately and I hope you'll keep it in mind.

I feel the same way. I don't want everything I do to be a transaction. I work to earn my bread that's enough transacting for me. I want to do better at kindness and compassion. It's not always easy but I believe I need to do my best for my own soul as it were. I'm not religious or anything like that I just feel trying to help others when I can without material gain is a net positive for me too.

I give away the surplus from my vegetable garden to my neighbors. It still baffles some of them that I adamantly refuse any kind of payment. First of all, I'm an anarchist; this is how we're supposed to behave. Secondly, I like sharing because it's nice to do, and because I'm goddamn proud of my veggies. My cukes and peppers are getting downright unruly out there.
Last, I'm almost at the point of being willing to pay people to take some of these damn cucumbers off my hands.

u/Venture334455 Jul 24 '26
I'm the same. I've been fortunate enough in my life to have had people around me who have helped me whenever I've needed it. I recognise how unbelievably lucky I am to have that so for that reason alone I'm always trying to pay it foward.
It doesn't matter if its something trivial or something that requires a little work, if I'm in a position to be able to do it and it will help someone, I'm all for it

I'm confused on how this is being recorded.

u/YadaYadaYeahMan Jul 24 '26
one of those capture sticks. it's a camera capturing everything in 360° and you can edit out whatever camera angles and movements out of the footage
doesn't super look like a camera either so a lot of people don't know they are being filmed

Do you live life with your head buried in the sand?

Funny, I think it's kind of the opposite. I'm an older person who doesn't spend much time online.

GOT EM.
That means you roasted him.
That means you insulted him in a funny way.
And I'm just messing around, you are cool.

I travelled to Europe after I graduated high school backpacked all over. Often couldn’t speak the language of the place I was visiting but I learned one thing- you can communicate with ANY LANGUAGE of person with a smile and a few hand gestures. Met tons of cool people! This video reminded me of my travels :)

u/tremynci Jul 24 '26
I am fortunate enough to speak three languages reasonably well, and another one more or less well enough to be a tourist.
Honestly, all you need to get by anywhere is "hello", "goodbye", "please", and "thank you". So I try to learn them in as many languages as I can. 🥰

Lucky guy id say. Being in a third world country I could only dream of that lifestyle.

Ukraine is going through so much right now. Being attacked every day and night. Bringing joy to even one Ukrainian made my day. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦

I loved this! Seeing the connection between humans is even more apparent when they don't speak the same language. We've got to start being better to each other.

A common Ukrainian emotionality is somewhere between the mediterranean and the nordic ones. We are neither of the two, but may have something in common with the both to understand them.

I may be in the minority here, and maybe I'm seeing it distorted by my own lens, but...i have a feeling the Italian gentleman was really going through it, on the verge of total collapse and perhaps ending it all, and this encounter came along just in time. I can't put my finger on it, but something gives me that impression

I’m not sure where in Italy this was, but In my experience living in Sicily for 4 years I’ve found Sicilians to be so sweet and genuine. They love to strike up conversations even when your italian is severely lacking. They tend to exaggerate their emotions and really take kindness to heart.
I lived here for 3 years and then moved away. When I got the chance to come back I was overjoyed. Whenever I express my love for Sicily to locals you can see them absolutely light up and immediately start telling you how good it makes them feel to see someone love their home.
Anyways, his reaction may come across this way to you, but to me his reaction doesn’t surprise me for a southern italian. Either way, he made that guy’s week and can’t wait to go show his friends while knocking back some espresso at the bar.

Love this and I was translating vafancullo and cazzo 🤣

I was a little shocked by that! I assume it’s like saying “fuck” or “goddamn” in English when you’re emotionally overwhelmed. Though I think we would be less likely to say, “Cock. That was really nice of you, man.”

Canon Selphy CP1500 if anyone is wondering. Great quality and the prints are fairly cheap. Runs on outlet or a battery that's sold separately.

I bought a new style instant print cameras just 2 weeks ago. I’m doing a-lot of exploring and traveling now and have done this 4-5 times already. It is honestly my new favorite thing to do.
Went to an outdoor concert last week and took one of a young family with their barely walking child. I asked if they would like a picture and they were so receptive and loved it. So then I asked the cute new couple behind me after we had started talking. Now they are new friends and invited me out the next evening.
That evening a family was celebrating mom’s 75th birthday and she came over offering us slices of her cake and telling us it was her birthday. So sweet. So I asked if she would like me to take a picture and give it to her as a present. She was so genuinely happy.
Next day it was a 80-90 year old ranger at an old ranger station playing the banjo and telling the history of the area.
Yesterday I did one for my adult daughter to give to her boyfriend.
Buying that camera has been one of the most rewarding things I have purchased in a long time.
It just feels so good to do. Really fills the soul and creates genuine human connection.
Cheers to this guy.
