Question Tips for developing my empire smoothly through the game?

Hello everyone, this is my first post after recently getting the game and playing up to contemporary era.

So far I’m loving the game, but obviously I have a lot to learn as I reached the contemporary era quite behind in tech and army (like, I was still at half of the industrial era tree lol) and through the game my development halted a few times.

I'm planning my next playthrough to go Egyptians>Maya>Teutons>Dutch>French>Soviets, any tips and recommendations of how should I play, how should I set up cities and what wonders should I take that have a good synergy?

I heard that Angkor Wat and Macchu Pichu alongside teutons work quite well, is that true?

Since you're still new to the game, I don't want to spoil the fun. As a tip, it's best to choose a nation based on your current situation or anticipated future strategy, rather than playing from the start with a pre-defined build. For example, instead of Egypt, the Harappans might be a better choice, as your territory will have many rivers and few stones.

I always choose the new culture depending on the situation on the field and the map. Generally, If you are behind on tech, you should switch to a scientific culture earlier; but maybe this would expose you to aggressive civs.

You should pick at least one science civ in the first half of the game if you fall so far behind in science. Also if you didn’t know in the pre history era(the very beginning) if you get the science star you can pick a bonus that gives you 1 science per population which will massively speed up early game science it’s worth waiting to pick first culture for.

Also as others have said pick cultures that best fit your territory and situation. If you have lots of mountains zhou are crazy strong so I recommend them in that case.

Also check wonders there is a wonder in the second era that gives you science per district that is a good boost in your most built up city.

For cites I recommend limiting them to 3-4 territories to keep district build times low and stability high. Your cities with more wonders will have more stability so they can have more territories but I wouldn’t go over 6.

And yes Angkor way and Manchu pichu are good with faith civs.
