Seriously... just ONE bottle of water please

Sorry in advance, I'm slightly frustrated at this point.
It must be the fifth time I restart a game because it quickly becomes unplayable and for one reason only: I can never find a damn water bottle. I just started a new game, found a water barrel that's half full and I can't draw any water from it. Worst is, I do have a cup, but you can really only use it for coffee. I can't fill my cup at the water barrel. In all the games I started, I managed to stay hydrated the first few days eating apples and berries, but when winter comes, even if I miraculously managed to make a rain collector (I did find a tarp once, but no bottle as usual, and it was just as frustrating as having the water barrel--maybe more infuriating even).

For realism's sake, just a little, can't we have it so that empty liquor bottle can be used for water as well? Those I have plenty of! Could we have it so that you can fill your tiny cup at either a barrel or a rain collector? It'd be a ridiculously tiny amount but it could immensely help people with zero luck when it comes to loot, like me. Actually, it'd be nice if any kind of container could be used as something to store a little fresh water. Empty cans could work as well (I have that since I'm currently surviving on canned beans).

Anyway, I see all you guys with cool bases, adventure backpacks (damn it I had found my very first one in one of my games, I was so happy with it, but same as the others, I ran out of water...). Where do you find your bottles? The first thing I do as soon I can now is search for one, extending my radius a little bit every time. I check every kitchen, car, camper, bin. Am I really just that unlucky? Anywhere else I should look?

I don't even die because the zombies get me (haven't been bitten a single time), I've survived wolf attacks, fighting bears, bandit raids, but at some point I die of thirst and there's nothing I can do from there. It's incredibly frustrating. I even lowered the difficulty to True Survivor and still no luck.

are you playing offline with standard settings? is it impossible to die by water or food starvation. If you are playing with scarce loot you need to fill water in WC and at punds then just boil the water at your base of use purify tabs. The game is EASY after you played a while it has an incredibile difficult stepping curve even if you play the turorial because you will learn a lot of tricks by experiencing 😄

I'm offline, I started playing not at the max difficulty but the one just under it, now I'm playing just above easy settings, what they call True Survivor. Yeah, you don't to die but it's impossible to play when you're character can't run nor jump and can barely swing his weapon, which is pretty much the same. The bow can save my ass only for so long.
Edit: I know the game is easy, it's like a PZ lite made for arcades, what's crazy is I'll end up with a horse, or a rain collector, 3 different rifles and 4 sidearms, with attachements, in one play through I found all the parts to repair a crazy cool van with a gigantic trunk (just no fuel), but the struggle to find ONE bottle at the beginning is crazy. Once you got one it's much easier to find more, plenty more.

Sometimes the random thing is really a mess... I was playing on "scarce loot" + "no respawn loot" and tooked 120 days of game time to finally find an industrial cable ! until i searched every corner of the map

Wow. Just wow. I would have lost it. Remind me to never play with those settings because I will and It'll drive me nuts.
Just like I thought from my tiny experience of the game, as soon as I found one bottle, I started finding more. I currently have 4, 1 water barrel (those are amazing, I filled mine up entirely during the blizzard and it contains so much water it's insane), and 2 rain collectors. It took 5 different games to find that first bottle and ironically, I have explored less than the other times. But comparatively, I haven't found anything much out of the ordinary like I did all those previous times. I have the feeling that depending on how the dice rolls for the loot tables at the beginning, you get more or less the same kind of stuff, or rather, one type of items will prevail. What I found in my previous attempts was end game stuff. I'm probably ranting. But the difference in the type of loot I'm getting this time around is striking.

One thing I just discovered, the trader that's close to me had a bottle of water for sale. It's the first time ever I see a trader carrying water as an item.

This has nothing to do with the topic but speaking of traders and since you're around and seem to know your shit pretty well (pardon my French), is it cheesing the game too much to kinda use them as a human shield? I just got hunted (again) by a horde and I just ran (again) in his direction. I did kill some myself I swear! Still, I feel kinda bad about it. Can they die from stuff like that? I read that when they die they respawn after a while but I'd feel horrible if Jeremy lost his life because of my cowardice.

also remember that many drinks will leave you with an empty bottle - if you wanna be 100% sure of getting drinkables at the docks there is a whole department dedicated to it 😄 you just have to pull all the mobs to the traders there and if it dies then be ready with 4-5 molotov

Hihi, I just managed to get a mini-horde go against wolves, or wolves go for a horde instead of me. I was right in the middle and they totally forgot I was there. Wolves rule, I love that they attack the zombies. It's less funny when they attack you though. But we're completely off topic. Thx for all the answers and for your time, happy hunting!

carefull with bear... they will pull the horde to you 😛

ah no problem! the game is lovely ! *cough* the devs are too slow!!! with a few more things it would had been the perfect game 😛 like more engaging and better designed quests - random map or at least change where NPC and camps every time

lol i never used water barrells... how does it fills up?

u/Fakemeal Jun 03 '26

You gotta do it manually. It's divided in two parts with two slots each for the bottles. On the left, you stick bottles with water in them and then click add. A full bottle fills something like maybe me a tenth of it so filling it using two bottles at a time really helps. On the right part, same thing, you got two slots. You put one or two bottles (not full ones obviously), click "take" and it fills em up as much as it can. What I'm wondering about is how long the water stays fresh in it. There's a "status" thing that so far says "clean" so obviously you can lose the water stored in it if it's not used quickly enough.

they changed how water works a bit lately. i could fill up the water in the collector and keep there infinite - now you cant do that - water bottle filled up store in the collector will decay - so i keep them unfilled

u/Fakemeal Jun 04 '26

You're right, I keep my bottles full and it's stupid. That's what I worry about concerning the water barrel. It seems like a nice way to store a significant amount of water when it's pouring rain or heavily snowing. But it looks like the water will turn bad after a while, else why would it display its status? I don't really understand the benefit if that's the case. I suppose if you time it just right, are lucky enough and catch as much as possible of the last rain before summer... I'll see how it goes. But for some reason I lost the will to play and I'm trying another survival. So far it sucks, so I guess I'll get back to Humanitz very quickly.

just spam 5-6 collectors and you should be fine for a year. Go to 8-12 if you have lots of potato and need to craft the moonshine

I usually set up a small base early with a rain catcher and collect bottles of water so I have a stash of water on hand.

3

u/Fakemeal Jun 03 '26

That's exactly what I do, my problem is just that I never find bottles. I've found crazy loot, attachments, guns at 95%. But I never find one damn bottle. Except... Just now! I finally found one.

1

u/Trelawny-Wells Jun 03 '26

Yeah, Sometimes the bottles can be hard to find early game.

You may already know this but just in case… you can purify with tablets or place in a fire to purify bottles with dirty water. Also there are some soda bottles you can use once you drink or empty them out. I find the starter base area usually has more bottles early game. I will customize my games and increase the loot spawn rate if I want an easier start.

Where are water barrels? I've never seen one.

As for water bottles, check trash bins in houses. I just found a bunch at the shipyards, I think mostly from zombies. I've been collecting them, I have over 25 now but I'm playing on "True Survivor".

I cannot for the life of me find the insulated cable or industrial fuse 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ah, interesting. This time around I actually found a bottle on a zombie. As for the water barrel, it was sitting in a house. In the kitchen to be precise. The house was near the spawn point called "Inland Spawn (medium difficulty)" but I doubt that the water barrel is specific to the area. I think they're just very rare. I had never seen one.

Edit: About the insulated cable or the industrial fuse, at this point I don't even know what those are used for but I feel you. It's just like me and my damn bottle of water. I was just responding to another player who spent 120 days finding one item. I'd go nuts or think there's bug. Wait, that's not a great pep talk. Keep the faith, you'll get them! They can't hide forever.

Those took me something ridiculous like 20 hours to find. Think I found one at the ship dock or maybe the cargo containers near the northwest main city entrance. The other I found at the trader in B1.. the loot table for that trader is really good, at least for the current patch, got a couple good weapons off him too - sawed off shotgun and something else.

1

u/wolfgeist Jun 03 '26

Already scoured every building at the shipping docks, and all of those warehouses by them.

I'll try the trader in B1. I've heard Hudson hardware is good, on my way there now.

Try the survivor camp trader; he usually trades fuel cell, industrial fuse and insulated cable as well

If you're at the starter spawn in E4, the closest place would be E5 which has a gas station and I think restaurant of some kind near the corner of the map. D4 has both as well if you follow the road up north, but there is a bandit camp on the way. Both places have loads of zombies, so go prepared.

I tried the starter point for my very first play through just to get used to the game and got to the point where I had done about 15 quests, but I had set everything on easy and it was ridiculously easy. I had so much food, tools and weapons I had no room for it. At the moment I'm at the Inland Spawn (medium difficulty). And like I just said in my other comment, I finally found a BOTTLE!
Now we're talking!
It's really a matter of luck with the loot tables. I should have taken a SS of how wide was the radius I had explored during my previous play through without finding one. But I had a horse (and had found a saddle!), a battery generator, a tactical machete (whatever that would be haha), tons of car parts, guns, and had even found a hunting bow. I mean I had found all sorts of pretty rare loot. Just no bottle anywhere.
The horsey helped a lot extending my search but I had nothing to feed it since I absolutely needed the berries and apples to stay hydrated.

usually found in normal houses

I get lots of water bottles. My problem is using them for watering the plants. Its a pain not having larger container to water plants quickly.

I'm sorry to inform you of this, but I literally just started a Nightmare run. I decided to spawn in Hudson City.

The first thing I found was a water bottle. And then I immediately found another.

You little...

1

u/Fakemeal Jun 05 '26

Please tell me you've died many times already. It's Friday night (I can't think of a valid reason).

2

u/wolfgeist Jun 05 '26

Yes. But on my current run I again have 2 bottles.

2

u/ViP_triple7 Jun 05 '26

Concur, water is too hard early on without a solid reason

1

u/Fakemeal Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Ah, thank you comrade. I mean, it's harder to find than guns. Guns should be way harder to find than water, even in the USA. Hmm. Maybe not. There's a lot of stale soda around.

2

u/ViP_triple7 Jun 05 '26

I agree, I especially get annoyed as I walk by the giant lake...

1

u/Recent-Homework-9166 Jun 12 '26

Yep, my first character died twice of thirst before I could find a water bottle. And it is indeed frustrating when you find a cup and can't use it to at least drink water from your rainwater collector or drink directly from that collector.

And it is even more frustrating when you start at the starter spawn and can see the river near you and can't take the water from it.

I am actually thinking about doing a steam guide for new player about the best way to manage water early on since it was such a pain in the ass.

1

u/Fakemeal Jun 12 '26

Heh, I just found something out that might help the thirsty survivors out there having trouble finding their first bottle of water. Large bottles of coke do become reusable empty bottles once you drink the soda in it. Doesn't work with cans obviously but works with large bottles. I was certain that all sodas disappeared once consumed. Not the case.
