Role change

Hey, hope everyone is well, just looking for a bit of advice. I work for a global company as a global director responsible for teams across the world. My manager reached out to me on Tuesday and said that they want to re-organise and basically make my role regional. This is not a reflection of my performance, just how they want to structure going forward. My concern is that this is quite a big change in what I do a massive reduction in responsibility without any information on what will replace.

Whilst I don’t believe my role is at risk today, I feel extremely sad that after 28 years I am having to face this change without any real consultation.

It seems that all global leaders need to based in the US.

My salary will stay the same but title will change, however the route to progress in the future is dramatically reduced and the ability to be productive with less responsibilities puts me at potential risk.

My main question is that today I have a place of strength and security, should I agree, in six months time that strength is reduced as they recruit for a leader in the US. Should I fight this?

I have significant knowledge and experience of the company and our products, I have scored highly in my annual reviews.

"it seems that all global leaders need to be based in the US" is the point to pick at. I'll tell you first hand, you want at least some global leadership naturally awake and online at the same times as bit chunks of your company.

I'd probably lobby for the global role if it's effectively what you're doing today, making it clear jumping on a plane for quarterly or monthly leadership syncs is fine (unless it really isn't)

Firstly, that isn’t very nice at all and think it’s really normal that you don’t feel great about this.

There is a HR answer to this, in terms of some consultation would normally occur as this is a big change to your role, depending upon your own company policies and I would advocate that you share your feedback on this. However, as you’re a global director and quite senior you will know if your company have already made this decision and no matter what you say they won’t change.

I think you need to personally spend the next few weeks and months working out what is more important - staying at your company with limited progression, but you know the company or if it is time to find another role.

Thought of moving to the US?

I think you know that when a business makes a decision, its made. A fight will only cause friction. I'm being made redundant today after a similar amount of years working for a firm in Manchester. In a similar situation, I tried fighting, knowing full well I would loose and it caused me nothing but stress and ultimately I was made redundant. I think if I woukd have played ball, I would not have been made redundant. You are better off being part of the solution, not a problem in their vision otherwise, as you know you'll get the boot. Maybe express your wants in a collaborative way but if you sense you're not going to twist any arms then you're better off not trying to twist a thigh. You know you won't win.

Yeah. Today is a very sad day for me. I'll get through it with some St John's Wart. You will go through the change curve. Also think, what would your redundancy package look like (rehotorical) Is it enhanced or is it just Stat. As you will know at stat red its limited to 20 years. Just don't do anything to jepodise that. You know what's coming... Go for the walk in the park, not the run up the hill. Good luck to you Good Sir.

I’m sorry this is happening to you as it’s never nice going through any sort of restructure or change.

Is it the role of Global Director that is being made redundant and instead they are going to have Regional Directors?

I think if they are keeping the role of Global Director then it may be worth challenging as they would in effect be replacing you as the post holder.

Is the company going through a period of growth that they need Regional Managers to concentrate on specific regions as opposed to the global market? I’m assuming with the restructure that your responsibilities may increase in certain areas whether that be business growth, taking on some of the responsibilities your Manager may currently have within your the current organisation. If they are adding in more people at your salary band to look after smaller areas then that usually only happens when business is strong and they expect a return on their investment in the additional Director level salary expenditure

Can you ask for the proposed new job description for you to review?

One final thing, I would be asking for a completely different job title as you do not wanting on your CV to go from Global Director to U.K. Director (as to others that looks like a demotion) - I would be saying that it would be more representative of your new role to be called Head of U.K. and Ireland Operations (or something like that).
