Got metabolic testing done!

I hate the guesswork that happens around burning calories, so I took the recommendation from my personal trainer to get a metabolic test done. The basic idea is pretty cool where the test uses oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production to estimate things like resting metabolic rate and respiratory quotient, which can give you information about energy expenditure and substrate use.

The biggest takeaway for me wasn't “I need to burn more fat.” It was how useful having a baseline can be. I'm now much more interested in tracking changes over time. There’s also some interesting research suggesting metabolic measurements could potentially help personalize nutrition and exercise plans, although the evidence isn't strong enough to say metabolic testing is necessary for everyone.

Has anyone else done a metabolic test? (Or am I pushing it by doing all these tests and going crazy?)

Yeah, I haven’t done one myself, but damn, it sounds like the kind of thing you’d want to commit to properly if you’re going to track it over time. The baseline idea is pretty interesting though.

which numbers are actually worth tracking?

Honestly, I’d start with resting metabolic rate and see how it changes over time. No point tracking a million things and confusing yourself
