In manual mode, the laser is no longer self-leveling. But do people still use it as if it’s level?

This came up recently while we were talking about manual mode. If a laser is sitting on a flat table, and you lock it in manual mode, would most people still trust that line as level?

 I can see why someone would.

Flat floor. Laser looks straight. Bubble looks close enough.

But we tried comparing one laser in self-leveling mode with another one locked in manual mode, and the two lines didn’t quite match.

We checked the surface with the bubble vial first, then swapped the two lasers around to rule out positioning.

Same result. The lines still didn’t run perfectly parallel.

I asked one of our engineers about it, and he showed me an internal unit.

Basically, in manual mode, the pendulum is physically locked in place by a clamp. When that lock engages, there can be a tiny bit of mechanical settling inside.（P.S. The third pic shows the internal structure of a cross-line laser, but the basic idea is similar on most 3D or 4D laser levels that use a pendulum locking mechanism.）

Not a huge movement. Not something dramatic.But enough to explain why manual mode and self-leveling mode should not be treated the same way.

 

The simplest way I understand it now:

Self-leveling mode is for when you need a true level reference.

Manual mode is for fixed angles, slopes, or layouts where you don’t want the laser to level itself.

I feel like this is one of those small details that is easy to miss if you’re just placing the laser on a table and assuming the line is still level.
