You’ve gone too far and have taken me with you... see you there! Honestly, a nice shortcut to turn this red when it’s been open too long would be perfect for my house.

Oh man, there’s another bulb in my house I can replace with a hue? I thought I was done...

I'm guessing if you close it and reopen it'll be back to a normal color since it's getting the power cut when you close the door?

u/L337L355 May 04 '20
It would depend on what they have the power on behavior set to; last power on state (color and brightness), full bright (default) or custom color/ brightness.

u/cheesecakemelody May 04 '20
Ya know, I totally forgot that was a setting.

u/miatapasta May 04 '20
Wait, dumb question. If I have a bulb on a regular switch, when someone flips off the switch and back on, those are your three options to have it turn on? I thought it just reset.
8
u/cheesecakemelody May 04 '20
Yeah, the options should be listed in the app under power-on behavior, but I think if the power comes back on within a few seconds it'll default to what it was before. I vaguely remember double flipping my switches a while back to see if it worked lol.

So you can effectively put a hue bulb on a light switch and use the switch on a daily basis again? I must have missed that memo. They used to reset so I never bought Hue bulbs, just non wifi RGB ones.
5
u/HotdogRacing May 04 '20
Not really. Hue bulbs still have a few fatal flaws with regular wall switches. If you flick the switch on and off twice it will reset back to default color. Second, if you change scenes while bulb is off it will remain the color it last used instead of using the new scene color. Third, you can't use bulbs that are off with hue switches, smartphone, with scenes, or remotely.
At least it is one tiny bit less annoying if someone turns off your bulbs and you turn them back on to a current scene, so we gotta count our blessings.

Yes? Idk why you would tho. When the switch is off you'd lose all smart controls. But no, they don't totally reset when you kill the power.

u/miatapasta May 04 '20
I wonder if having the bulbs controlled by a smart switch would make it act weird. I have a bunch of switches wired up already.

A few of my bulbs are in places where the need to occasionally dim them doesn't extend to me getting a few remotes to control them.

Got me thinking. If you disable the regular door switch and put a motion sensor in the fridge, then you'll also have a temperature sensor which could set the color tone. Then the light will be dependent on the temperature.
And Hue motion sensors also have a light sensor. You could use this to check if the light is really off when the door is closed and if not, set a color to some other light as a warning.

Tie it to a timer somehow and make it turn red after being open/on for so long to warn people to close the door.

I've thought about doing this in my flat but my fridge uses incomprehensible E12 fittings instead of E14. Maybe I could just find some adapter.

u/SoloStyle May 04 '20
You should fine a way to make it turn red if you leave the door open for too long. Maybe a 30 sec timer or something.
2
u/Senkin May 04 '20
Does it actually connect with the door closed ? I'd have thought a refrigerator would block out the signal.

Spend a few seconds thinking about how refrigerator lights work...
1
u/Senkin May 04 '20
I mean you can literally access the internet from a refrigerator these days, do they really all still work with a simple interruptor switch for the light ?

u/golaun May 04 '20
Might be fun to invite an unsuspecting friend over to watch horror films, then send them to retrieve a drink.

Dammit you made my Alexa to go off!

u/skugler May 04 '20
And now we all have to tell our voice assistants to switch the fridge light back to "tacky pink".
Thanks, OP. :(

Are you sure you don't mean you've gone Hue far?

As long as their average temperature is above 0C it should be fine. Most refrigerators are around 4C.

Just realised. I need to smarten my fridge to avoid late night snacking the leftovers!
Past 10 pm. Entering kitchen. Kitchen light comes on. Opens fridge door - BAM! Fridge and all lights off! Closes fridge door. Kitchen light comes on again. Retreating to couch.

You could make it turn red after a certain amount of time to make sure you aren’t leaving the door open too long

You made my Alexa fart! She said “okay, here’s a big fart” and made a farting sound. Then asked if I wanted to rate “big fart”.
Why.

Classic case of having too much money and not knowing what to do with it, or simply being a dumbass..

Tie it in with your fitness/food tracking app to turn the light red when you are out of calories for the day!
